Texans GM Nick Caserio hints more contract extensions could come

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio indicated to Sports Radio 610 that more contract extensions could manifest by the end of the season.

The Houston Texans scored their first in-season contract extension of the Nick Caserio era when they signed defensive back Tremon Smith to a one-year, $1.6 million deal on Dec. 4.

Caserio joined “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] Tuesday and went through the process of how the team will approach the possibility of giving out more contract extensions through the end of the regular season.

We’ll see how it goes,” Caserio said. “We’ve had discussions with various players, multitude of players, I would say throughout the season. So, there is never a timing element on this. Some players are more inclined, some players and agents are more inclined to have those discussions during the season. As you get a little bit closer toward the end of the season, some players and agents are kind of inclined to let the season play out.”

The first-year Texans general manager stressed that agents will be doing their own market research, and that communication is key, no matter the time of year.

We’re going to have conversations with those players after the season,” said Caserio. “They’re going to know what direction we’re going to go, what our level of interest is. Some players will get to free agency and we’ll continue to talk to those players in free agency. Some players we’ll have a chance to sign before the free agent period starts. So, we’re going to be very flexible, we’re going to be very open-minded, and we’re going to try to identify players that we would like to have here next season. And there has to be some mutual interest on the opposing end.”

Caserio says the team has “had a lot of good feedback” and that more extensions like the one with Smith could happen over the final five weeks of the season.

Said Caserio: “There might be some others that over the course of the rest of the season we might be able to reach an agreement. And if we don’t, we’ll deal with it in the offseason.”

The Texans face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14 at NRG Stadium. Currently, with a 2-10 record, the Texans are projected to have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

Texans sign CB Tremon Smith to one-year contract extension

The Houston Texans announced they have signed cornerback Tremon Smith to a one-year contract extension.

The Houston Texans have announced they have signed cornerback Tremon Smith to a contract extension.

Smith, a former Kansas City Chiefs 2018 sixth-round pick from Central Arkansas, has been a decent contributor for the Texans in 2021. The 5-11, 190-pound defensive back has collected 14 combined tackles and a forced fumble along with returning a punt for a yard and six kicks for 156 return yards.

According to Aaron Wilson from Sports Talk 790, the contract is for one with a maximum value of $1.6 million. The guaranteed base salary is $300,000 with a $150,000 signing bonus with a $50,000 workout bonus.

Special teams coach Frank Ross told reporters on Dec. 2 that he is pleased with what Smith has provided as a kick returner.

“He looked really good in that one opportunity we had there last week,” Ross said. “You guys all know this, that it’s an 11-man show. One break down might stop you in your tracks. Two break downs, you might not have any shot at all. When you do get that one crease, when you do get that one shot, he’s got the speed and a little bit of wiggle to him. We want to attack aggressively downhill. I think he’s done a good job with that. Going to continue to press him to do just that.”

The Texans take on the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium.

Texans CB Tremon Smith shares insight into slowing down QB Josh Allen and the Bills

Houston Texans cornerback Tremon Smith has an idea on how the defense could slow down quarterback Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills offense.

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans’ secondary has seen its share of struggles through the first three games of the season, and it’s going to be difficult to find their rhythm against Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

ESPN has Allen as an early favorite to win league MVP honors, as the 25-year-old quarterback has led the Bills to a 2-1 record, throwing for 807 yards and seven touchdowns.

First-year coach David Culley described Allen as a strong kid who has the total package. But defensive back Tremon Smith understands that slowing down the Bills will take more than focusing on Allen.

“He has a great arm,” Smith said during Monday’s post-practice press conference. “He can make pretty much any throw on the field. So, we have to be real sticky this week. Just looking forward to the matchups we got with Cole Beasley and Stefon Diggs and all of them.”

“They have a great quarterback-receiver duo. They’re real explosive. They are just really good on the offensive side in general.”

The Bills have averaged 39.0 points over the last two games, putting together the most explosive offense. With Allen leading the way, Buffalo has recorded an averaged of 397.5 total yards, with 504 coming in the passing game.

Allen has spread the ball around evenly amongst his receivers, as Emmanuel Sanders (194 yds), Cole Beasley (194 yds) and Diggs (191 yds) are all less than 10 yards away from surpassing 200 reception yards on the season.

Smith says the key to slowing down a high-powered offense similar to the Bills is knowing their defensive calls and assignments prior to the start of the play — but more importantly, trusting their teammates.

“We are going to stick to what we have been doing these past weeks and just getting better at what we’ve been doing,” he said. “We just know we beat ourselves with a couple of mistakes in critical times in the game. So, we are just going on each other and be where we are supposed to be and trust our teammates.”

Texans sign former Chiefs, Colts, Packers cornerback Tremon Smith

The Houston Texans have signed former Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, and Green Bay Packers cornerback Tremon Smith.

The Houston Texans have signed former Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, and Green Bay Packers cornerback Tremon Smith.

According to Mark Berman of Fox 26 [KRIV-TV], the deal is for one year and worth up to $1.13 million.

New general manager Nick Caserio’s strategy approaching free agency is to “hit singles and doubles.” So far, the first-year GM is sticking precisely to that strategy.

Smith was taken in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL by the Chiefs. The former Central Arkansas product is known more as a returner, and has a 25.4 yards per kickoff return average for his career.

As a cornerback, Smith has collected 10 combined tackles, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery in 32 games played, one of which he started.

Report: Colts RFA Tremon Smith to sign with Texans

Tremon Smith heading to the Texans.

Indianapolis Colts restricted free agent cornerback Tremon Smith is reportedly signing a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, per Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle.

Smith was a restricted free agent for the Colts. However, AL.com reported that Smith was not given a qualifying offer and because there was no tender placed on him, he is free to sign with the Houston Texans leading up to the new league year on Wednesday.

Smith was a special teamer and depth piece for the Colts in 2020. He played 10 games, recording two tackles.

Cornerback will be a big need to address for the Colts this offseason. They have some options in free agency and could be looking to add more depth during the draft.

Regardless, Smith will be heading to Houston barring a change leading up to the new league year.

Colts place Parris Campbell, Malik Hooker on IR among other moves

The Colts made several moves on Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts placed wide receiver Parris Campbell and safety Malik Hooker on the injured reserve list and made several other roster moves, the team announced Tuesday.

Among those other moves included elevating safety Ibraheim Campbell and cornerback Tremon Smith to the active roster from the practice squad. The Colts also signed tight ends Hale Hentges and Ethan Wolf to the practice squad.

Campebell suffered an injury to his MCL and PCL when getting tackled on the second play for the offense on Sunday against the Vikings. He’s eligible to return but there hasn’t been a timetable on when that may be. There is also a chance he doesn’t return for the 2020 season.

Hooker’s season is officially over as he goes on the injured reserve list. He tore his Achilles and will be out for the year. It’s a tough way to end a contract season, one that could be his final in Indy.

Campbell is brought up for depth purposes in Hooker’s absence while Smith needs to be elevated in case Rock Ya-Sin can’t play due to a stomach illness that kept him inactive in Week 2.

Hentges and Wolf are insurance in case starter Jack Doyle misses more time than expected.

Jersey number updates for newly-signed Colts

What numbers will the new Colts wear?

The Indianapolis Colts brought in three new players to the active roster this week, all of which came on the defensive side of the ball.

Needing secondary help following the opt-outs of cornerback Marvell Tell III and safety Rolan Milligan, the Colts signed veteran safety Tavon Wilson and 24-year-old cornerback Tremon Smith.

The Colts also brought in defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth to compete in the middle of the defensive line.

Here are the jersey numbers the new Colts will be wearing:

  • CB Tremon Smith — No. 35
  • DT Taylor Stallworth — No. 67
  • S Tavon Wilson — No. 31

The Colts likely aren’t finished in making changes to the roster over the next three weeks before cutting it down to 53 players in September.

Colts sign CB Tremon Smith, waive DE Kendall Coleman

Colts add more to the secondary.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerback Tremon Smith and waived defensive end Kendall Coleman, the team announced Sunday.

Smith, 24, was a part of the six players who visited the Colts on a tryout basis earlier this week. He was a sixth-round pick with the Chiefs in 2018 where he worked on special teams as a return man and in a limited fashion as a cornerback. Smith has also held stints with the Packers and Eagles.

Smith will be joining a cornerback room currently comprised of Rock Ya-Sin, Kenny Moore, Xavier Rhodes, T.J. Carrie and Isaiah Rodgers.

Coleman was an undrafted free agent who signed with the team following the 2020 NFL Draft out of Syracuse. He was a long shot to make the roster as a depth piece in the defensive end room.

Though Coleman was waived, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Colts bring him in to the practice squad when they are allowed to do so.

Former Chiefs draft picks Kahlil McKenzie, Tremon Smith waived by Seahawks, Eagles

Could a reunion with either Tremon Smith or Kahlil McKenzie be on the horizon?

A pair of 2018 draft picks selected by the Kansas City Chiefs were waived by their respective teams on Sunday. Kahlil McKenzie and Tremon Smith were both selected in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Chiefs and neither player made it more than a season with the team.

Expectations were high for McKenzie after general manager Brett Veach talked up his potential. McKenzie switched to guard in the NFL after playing defensive tackle at the University of Tennessee. The Chiefs did say they would have liked to keep McKenzie on the practice squad, but he joined the Seattle Seahawks following 53-man roster cuts in 2019.

Smith was a standout special teamer during his first year in Kansas City. He amassed 33 kick returns for 886 yards and averaged 26.8 yards per return. That was good for the third-most kick return yards in the NFL during 2018. Unfortunately, Smith struggled to learn the cornerback spot with the team. The Chiefs tried Smith at RB before releasing him just after the start of the 2019 season.

Both McKenzie and Smith cleared waivers on Monday. They are free to sign with any team. It’s possible that the Chiefs could seek a reunion with these players as they’re familiar with the system in Kansas City. Smith, in particular, is someone for fans to watch as the Chiefs look to get Mecole Hardman more involved on offense. They’re in need of a solid return specialist and special teams coordinator Dave Toub could seek a reunion.
