Texans vs. Jaguars first quarter recap: Davis Mills, special teams build 14-3 lead

The Houston Texans took a 14-3 lead over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15 at TIAA Bank Field.

Texans 1st drive (15 plays, 75 yards, 8:21) — On a second-and-8 from the Houston 27, Mills actually had room to run, but he went for the checkdown and threw it incomplete. Then, Houston had a delay of game on third-and-8 to make it third-and-13. The Texans weren’t able to overcome the yardage and committed their first three-and-out. However, the Jaguars are still a very bad football team and committed illegal use of hands to the face to keep Houston’s drive alive. The Texans picked up two third-down conversions in their own right to keep the chains moving. QB Davis Mills connects with WR Brandin Cooks for a 22-yard touchdown on third-and-1. Texans, 7-0

Jaguars 1st drive (9 plays, 79 yards, 4:57) — Jacksonville never faced a third down until third-and-10 from Houston’s 11-yard line, and they didn’t pick it up as RB James Robinson picked up seven yards. Interim coach Darrell Bevell feigned that he was going to go for it, but after a timeout, K Matthew Wright hit a 22-yard field goal. Texans, 7-3

KICKOFF, 1:47 — CB Tremon Smith goes right up the middle on the kickoff return and takes it all the way to the house for a 98-yard touchdownTexans, 14-3

Jaguars 2nd drive () — The Jaguars managed 12 yards in three plays before the end of the quarter.

The Houston Texans aren’t showing any compassion for the Jacksonville Jaguars and their troubles.

Looking for a sweep of their AFC South counterparts, the Texans are off to a running start on Sunday.

They were leading 7-3 when the Jags made the mistake of kicking off to Tremon Smith.

Ninety-eight yards later, Smith and the football were in the end zone and the Texans were looking good as they aimed for their third win of 2021.

Houston Texans cornerback Tremon Smith returned a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15.

The Houston Texans had a boon occur on special teams against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15 at TIAA Bank Field.

Cornerback Tremon Smith returned a 98-yard touchdown to give the Texans a 14-3 lead over the Jaguars.

General manager Nick Caserio told Sports Radio 610 on Dec. 7 that Smith’s improvement throughout the season is why they wanted to extend his contract through the 2022 season.

“He has come in and he has improved relative to what he’s done in previous places,” Caserio said. He’s had different opportunities, whether it’s defensively or in the kicking games. So, we’ve been pretty open-minded. I talked about this in terms of signing different players at different points or extending players at different points. So, the thing about Tremon here in the opportunity. He’s improved.”

Smith’s return for a touchdown was the first time since Oct. 4, 2009, when Jacoby Jones did it that the Texans returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Journeyman Tremon Smith finds stability with the Texans

Tremon Smith has been a journeyman in the NFL, but he found some stability with the Houston Texans in 2021.

HOUSTON — Tremon Smith was one of many journeymen who signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans prior to the start of the 2021 campaign. The Texans were Smith’s fifth team in four years, which included stops with the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts.

With the stiff competition within the secondary, it appeared that Houston would be another pitstop amidst Smith’s quest for stability in the NFL. But the Texans saw fit to extend Smith beyond the 2021 season by awarding their cornerback with a one-year extension worth $1.6 million.

“It [felt] good — it’s been something I have been working on my whole career, just to get an extension,” Smith said while talking to reporters on Monday. “You know these past three years, I’ve been on three different teams, so to be somewhere back-to-back in two years is a good feeling and brought out confidence in me.”

Smith was the first player to receive an in-season extension under first-year general manager Nick Caserio. Smith said while he continued to focus on Houston’s next opponent, his agent had multiple extension talks with Caserio.

In addition to his on-field production, where Smith’s most significant contributions come by the way of special teams, the 25-year-old defensive back believes the energy and the hard work he brings to the organization daily is what led to him receiving his first career extension. In 12 games played, Smith has averaged 25.5 yards per kick return.

“I know we got a group of 10 people out there, me being 11, willing to block and go all out that way to give me a crease,” he said. “I was telling them the other night, ‘I trust in y’all a lot and if you give me a crease, I am going to hit it full speed. I am back here going full speed for y’all guys.”

With the team sitting at a lousy 2-10 ahead of their Week 14 match against the 4-8 Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Smith’s goal is to continue assisting the Texans both on and off the field in hopes of helping the team win more games.

Smith knows it will take some time before his dedication and devotion to the Texans will start showing results in the win column. But for now, Smith is content knowing that his hard work and dedication brought a sense of stability to a career full of uncertainty.

“I don’t have to adapt next year,” Smith said. “I am coming in with the same group of guys, whether it is a new group of guys I am coming in with the same coaching staff.”

“That feels good. As I said, it’s a confidence builder to be going into the same scheme next year. I’m just really looking forward to going into the same scheme and realizing that I was here last year too.”

Texans GM Nick Caserio hints more contract extensions could come

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio indicated to Sports Radio 610 that more contract extensions could manifest by the end of the season.

The Houston Texans scored their first in-season contract extension of the Nick Caserio era when they signed defensive back Tremon Smith to a one-year, $1.6 million deal on Dec. 4.

Caserio joined “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] Tuesday and went through the process of how the team will approach the possibility of giving out more contract extensions through the end of the regular season.

We’ll see how it goes,” Caserio said. “We’ve had discussions with various players, multitude of players, I would say throughout the season. So, there is never a timing element on this. Some players are more inclined, some players and agents are more inclined to have those discussions during the season. As you get a little bit closer toward the end of the season, some players and agents are kind of inclined to let the season play out.”

The first-year Texans general manager stressed that agents will be doing their own market research, and that communication is key, no matter the time of year.

We’re going to have conversations with those players after the season,” said Caserio. “They’re going to know what direction we’re going to go, what our level of interest is. Some players will get to free agency and we’ll continue to talk to those players in free agency. Some players we’ll have a chance to sign before the free agent period starts. So, we’re going to be very flexible, we’re going to be very open-minded, and we’re going to try to identify players that we would like to have here next season. And there has to be some mutual interest on the opposing end.”

Caserio says the team has “had a lot of good feedback” and that more extensions like the one with Smith could happen over the final five weeks of the season.

Said Caserio: “There might be some others that over the course of the rest of the season we might be able to reach an agreement. And if we don’t, we’ll deal with it in the offseason.”

The Texans face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14 at NRG Stadium. Currently, with a 2-10 record, the Texans are projected to have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

Texans sign CB Tremon Smith to one-year contract extension

The Houston Texans announced they have signed cornerback Tremon Smith to a one-year contract extension.

The Houston Texans have announced they have signed cornerback Tremon Smith to a contract extension.

Smith, a former Kansas City Chiefs 2018 sixth-round pick from Central Arkansas, has been a decent contributor for the Texans in 2021. The 5-11, 190-pound defensive back has collected 14 combined tackles and a forced fumble along with returning a punt for a yard and six kicks for 156 return yards.

According to Aaron Wilson from Sports Talk 790, the contract is for one with a maximum value of $1.6 million. The guaranteed base salary is $300,000 with a $150,000 signing bonus with a $50,000 workout bonus.

Special teams coach Frank Ross told reporters on Dec. 2 that he is pleased with what Smith has provided as a kick returner.

“He looked really good in that one opportunity we had there last week,” Ross said. “You guys all know this, that it’s an 11-man show. One break down might stop you in your tracks. Two break downs, you might not have any shot at all. When you do get that one crease, when you do get that one shot, he’s got the speed and a little bit of wiggle to him. We want to attack aggressively downhill. I think he’s done a good job with that. Going to continue to press him to do just that.”

The Texans take on the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium.

Texans CB Tremon Smith shares insight into slowing down QB Josh Allen and the Bills

Houston Texans cornerback Tremon Smith has an idea on how the defense could slow down quarterback Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills offense.

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans’ secondary has seen its share of struggles through the first three games of the season, and it’s going to be difficult to find their rhythm against Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

ESPN has Allen as an early favorite to win league MVP honors, as the 25-year-old quarterback has led the Bills to a 2-1 record, throwing for 807 yards and seven touchdowns.

First-year coach David Culley described Allen as a strong kid who has the total package. But defensive back Tremon Smith understands that slowing down the Bills will take more than focusing on Allen.

“He has a great arm,” Smith said during Monday’s post-practice press conference. “He can make pretty much any throw on the field. So, we have to be real sticky this week. Just looking forward to the matchups we got with Cole Beasley and Stefon Diggs and all of them.”

“They have a great quarterback-receiver duo. They’re real explosive. They are just really good on the offensive side in general.”

The Bills have averaged 39.0 points over the last two games, putting together the most explosive offense. With Allen leading the way, Buffalo has recorded an averaged of 397.5 total yards, with 504 coming in the passing game.

Allen has spread the ball around evenly amongst his receivers, as Emmanuel Sanders (194 yds), Cole Beasley (194 yds) and Diggs (191 yds) are all less than 10 yards away from surpassing 200 reception yards on the season.

Smith says the key to slowing down a high-powered offense similar to the Bills is knowing their defensive calls and assignments prior to the start of the play — but more importantly, trusting their teammates.

“We are going to stick to what we have been doing these past weeks and just getting better at what we’ve been doing,” he said. “We just know we beat ourselves with a couple of mistakes in critical times in the game. So, we are just going on each other and be where we are supposed to be and trust our teammates.”

Texans sign former Chiefs, Colts, Packers cornerback Tremon Smith

The Houston Texans have signed former Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, and Green Bay Packers cornerback Tremon Smith.

The Houston Texans have signed former Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, and Green Bay Packers cornerback Tremon Smith.

According to Mark Berman of Fox 26 [KRIV-TV], the deal is for one year and worth up to $1.13 million.

New general manager Nick Caserio’s strategy approaching free agency is to “hit singles and doubles.” So far, the first-year GM is sticking precisely to that strategy.

Smith was taken in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL by the Chiefs. The former Central Arkansas product is known more as a returner, and has a 25.4 yards per kickoff return average for his career.

As a cornerback, Smith has collected 10 combined tackles, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery in 32 games played, one of which he started.

Report: Colts RFA Tremon Smith to sign with Texans

Tremon Smith heading to the Texans.

Indianapolis Colts restricted free agent cornerback Tremon Smith is reportedly signing a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, per Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle.

Smith was a restricted free agent for the Colts. However, AL.com reported that Smith was not given a qualifying offer and because there was no tender placed on him, he is free to sign with the Houston Texans leading up to the new league year on Wednesday.

Smith was a special teamer and depth piece for the Colts in 2020. He played 10 games, recording two tackles.

Cornerback will be a big need to address for the Colts this offseason. They have some options in free agency and could be looking to add more depth during the draft.

Regardless, Smith will be heading to Houston barring a change leading up to the new league year.
