Have the Ravens solved their defensive struggles with a reshuffled secondary?

Have the Ravens solved their defensive struggles with a reshuffled secondary?

By far, the Baltimore Ravens‘ biggest weakness and biggest surprise through 11 weeks of the 2024 season has been the secondary’s play. The Ravens entered the season with what looked like one of the league’s top coverage units on paper, but reality disagreed once the pads came on.

All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton, cornerback Marlon Humphrey, and rookie first-round cornerback Nate Wiggins have all had good seasons. Still, the drastic falloff from veteran free safety Marcus Williams and cornerback Brandon Stephens to go with poor play from newly acquired safety Eddie Jackson has tanked Baltimore’s pass defense. Through 11 weeks, the Ravens have allowed the most passing yards in the league.

After allowing quarterback Joe Burrow to throw for 428 yards and four touchdowns, with wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase going for 264 yards and three touchdowns through the air against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 10, Baltimore decided to make changes on the backend of the defense. Williams was benched for the second time this season, while Hamilton and Ar’Darious Washington formed the starting safety duo against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 11. This was a change for Hamilton, as the do-it-all star is best known for his game-wrecking ability closer to the line of scrimmage, but after the results against the Steelers, he may have found a new home on the defense to finish this year.

The Ravens’ secondary stifled quarterback Russell Wilson, holding him to 205 passing yards, zero touchdowns, and -7.41 expected points through the air. Wide receiver George Pickens was held under 100 yards and out of the endzone, with cornerback Tre’Davious White having a pair of impressive pass deflections against him to prevent touchdowns. White played 24 snaps against Pittsburgh, eating into Stephens’ role on the boundary.

While the Steelers offense has not been one of the league’s best this season, Wilson’s ability to connect with Pickens down the field was something to fear coming into the game, and Baltimore kept a lid on the duo for the most part. The Ravens will face more formidable challenges to see if reshuffling the secondary has fixed the issues plaguing the defense, starting with a Monday Night Football showdown against star quarterback Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers.

Ravens CB Tre’Davious White talks his expectations and timetable for getting on the field

Tre’Davious White looking to earn playing time in Ravens secondary

Baltimore has one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL, and the Ravens made a big move at the trade deadline, acquiring Tre’Davious White from the Rams for draft picks.

White sat out Baltimore’s win over Cincinnati, and he’s looking to carve out a role for the stretch run.

John Harbaugh has stated that White would play his snaps at the outside cornerback spot. He’ll work to join a rotation that includes Brandon Stephens, Marlon Humphrey, and Nate Wiggins. White recently talked about his expectations and timetable for getting on the field.

Baltimore has a stud in Nate Wiggins and could play White at outside cornerback, getting some of Brandon Stephens’s reps. The Ravens could counter that move by moving Marlon Humphrey inside at the slot cornerback or safety position more going forward.

John Harbaugh says Tre’Davious White has a role in Ravens CB rotation

The Ravens have one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL and just acquired a former Pro Bowl cornerback at the trade deadline.   Tre’Davious White didn’t suit for the Week 10 win over Cincinnati, but John Harbaugh says the veteran cornerback will have a role.

White started the first four games of the season for the Rams but had been inactive for their last four games before the trade.

White, who tore his Achilles while playing for the Bills last season, had 12 tackles and two passes defensed in his four appearances. He’ll join a cornerback group that includes Marlon Humphrey, Brandon Stephens, Nate Wiggins, Arthur Maulet, and T.J. Tampa.

Report: Ravens offered third-round pick for CB Marshon Lattimore at the trade deadline

Ravens offered third-round pick for Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore at the trade deadline

After a night in which the Baltimore Ravens allowed 428 passing yards and four touchdowns from Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, with 264 yards and three touchdowns going to star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, it was reported that New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore was almost a member of the purple and black at the trade deadline just a few days prior.

According to NFL Insider Albert Breer, the Ravens offered the Saints a third-round pick for the four-time Pro Bowler but was ultimately outbid by the Washington Commanders.

Instead, Baltimore traded for Los Angeles Rams cornerback Tre’Davious White in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick and received a 2027 seventh-round pick back in the deal.

The Ravens’ pass defense has been the team’s biggest weakness through the first 10 weeks of the season, and that was never more evident than when they were against the Bengals on Thursday Night Football. Baltimore’s safety play has been a significant reason for the unit’s regression, but cornerback Brandon Stephens had a rough season after a breakout performance in 2023. Veteran cornerback Marlon Humphrey is back to playing at a high level, forcing a game-changing fumble on running back Chase Brown to jumpstart a comeback victory over Cincinnati, and rookie first-rounder Nate Wiggins has been solid. The team could still use any form of help in the secondary.

Whether or not White will be able to make a difference for the Ravens’ secondary down the stretch remains to be seen. The former first-rounder has struggled this season, leading to several inactivations as a healthy scratch on gameday for the Rams. The former All-Pro cornerback suffered a torn ACL with the Buffalo Bills in 2021 and is coming off a torn Achilles that ended his 2023 season.

Number for new Ravens CB Tre’Davious White revealed

The number for new Ravens CB Tre’Davious White was revealed

The Baltimore Ravens acquired cornerback Tre’Davious White from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a 7th-round pick swap prior to the 2024 trade deadline. He will come into Baltimore to provide cornerback depth and veteran leadership, something the unit could use more of moving forward.

It was revealed on the team’s website that White will be donning No. 25 for the team. The number was last worn by fellow cornerback Ka’dar Holman, and has previously been worn by other Ravens cornerbacks such as Tavon Young, Chris Carr and others.

White is a low-risk, high reward player for Baltimore at this point in his career. While he is a multiple time Pro Bowler with many accolades to his name, injuries have taken a toll on his body, and he was a healthy scratch for Los Angeles over the last month after not performing well during the early parts of the 2024 season.

The Tre’Davious White signing was a huge flop for the Rams

Tre’Davious White’s tenure with the Rams went about as poorly as it could have, ending after just four games

The Los Angeles Rams completely remade their secondary this offseason. They brought in Kam Curl, reunited with Darious Williams, drafted Kamren Kinchens and signed two-time All-Pro Tre’Davious White.

It was the last name on that list who elicited the most excitement among fans, even though everyone knew there was some risk because of his injury history. He was a big name and a beloved player in Buffalo, bringing excellent ball skills and leadership to a young Rams defense.

A perfect match, right?

Unfortunately, that signing went about as poorly as it could have, with the Rams getting only four games out of the star cornerback. After requesting a trade, he was dealt to the Ravens before Tuesday’s deadline in a seventh-round pick swap – just about the lowest possible return for a trade in the NFL.

The Rams were hoping to take it slow with White as he continued to recover from a torn Achilles, but they were forced to play him right away because of Williams’ hamstring injury in camp. In the first four games of the season, White looked like a shell of himself.

According to Pro Football Focus, he was targeted 13 times and allowed nine receptions. That’s not even the bad part. He gave up a total of 151 yards and four touchdowns, breaking up only two passes and committing five penalties.

After Week 4, the Rams benched him. He was a healthy scratch in Week 5 and hasn’t played a single snap since then, being inactive in each of the last four games. His contract was structured to mitigate the risk of a veteran cornerback with a brutal injury history, but it’s not as if the Rams got him for free.

His contract included $3.25 million fully guaranteed, plus $1 million in per-game bonuses. He was active for four games, so we can assume the Rams also paid about $235,292 for those bonuses.

What they got out of nearly $3.5 million was four starts and four touchdowns allowed in coverage, including penalties that gave their opponents free yardage. It’s hard to imagine the signing going much worse than that.

Fortunately, the Rams were proactive and swallowed their pride by benching him after four games once Williams returned. Yet again, Les Snead and Sean McVay moved on at the right time rather than waiting too long, realizing that White wasn’t playing at a starting-caliber level and making him inactive – not only because he was playing poorly, but because it’d also save them money.

They got just about nothing in return for White in Tuesday’s deal, but they did right by him instead of forcing him to sit on the bench for the rest of the deal. Now he’ll at least get a shot in Baltimore on a team that could use cornerback help.

2024 NFL trade deadline: Former Bills first-round pick Tre’Davious White dealt

2024 NFL trade deadline: Former Bills first-round pick Tre’Davious White dealt

After spending the first seven years of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills, cornerback Tre’Davious is now on his second team in 2024.

According to various reports, the Los Angeles Rams have dealt the former first-round pick of the Bills to the Baltimore Ravens.

The Rams also got nearly nothing in return, an exchange for seventh-round draft selections for White:

While a star in Buffalo, White has been anything but that in Los Angeles.

White signed with the Rams earlier this offseason as he was released by the Bills in a salary cap move. Some in Buffalo questioned that, but few have since the start of the 2024 season.

White has undoubtedly struggled in L.A. to start the season. The Rams gave White permission to seek a trade, and despite the Rams getting little in return, Los Angeles shipped him to Baltimore.

White took part in the Rams’ first four games over the year but those went bad. He recorded 12 tackles and two passes defended. However, the 29-year-old allowed nine catches for 151 yards and four touchdowns. He also committed five penalties in coverage.

Over the past four weeks, White has been a healthy scratch which is why he was seeking a trade.

Most believe the reason for White’s struggles stem from his second serious injury he sustained in Buffalo in 2023. White tore his Achilles and it’s difficult for any player to return from such a serious injury.

Most medical professionals believe it takes a player more than a year before they are fully back to 100 percent health when sustaining a serious Achilles injury… and White has fallen under that threshold.

White was placed on injured reserve by the Bills back in October 2023 following his Achilles injury. White previously had torn his ACL in 2021.

Ravens and Rams are already trading 2027 NFL Draft picks

The Ravens and Rams agreed to a deal at the 2024 NFL trade deadline that involves picks from the 2027 NFL Draft

We are barely six months past the 2024 NFL Draft, with the 2025 version in Green Bay not firing up until the end of next April. It’s pretty commonplace to find teams dealing picks for the 2025 draft around ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.

There were some 2026 picks dealt as well, parts of packages made by GMs hoping to still be employed two offseasons from now to use them. But the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Rams upped the ante even further.

The Ravens and Rams agreed to a deal involving Los Angeles cornerback Tre’Davious White in the hour before Tuesday’s deadline. White is heading to Baltimore, along with a seventh-round pick, for a seventh-round pick in return. Those seventh-rounders aren’t in 2025 or even 2026, however. They are from the 2027 NFL Draft.

These are the first 2027 draft selections to be traded, a full two-and-a-half years ahead of time!

Rams are trading CB Tre’Davious White to Ravens but getting almost nothing in return

The Rams have found a trade partner for 2-time Pro Bowl CB Tre’Davious White, sending him to the Ravens for barely anything in return

The Los Angeles Rams granted Tre’Davious White permission to seek a trade and in the last hour before the 4 p.m. ET deadline, they found a partner. According to reports, the Rams are sending White to the Baltimore Ravens.

Along with White, the Rams are trading a 2027 seventh-round pick and only getting a 2026 seventh-rounder in return. So essentially, the Rams are moving their seventh-round pick up one year in exchange for White.

The Rams were never expected to get much for the veteran cornerback considering he’s been a healthy scratch for the last four games. Sean McVay said the team would’ve preferred to keep him but understood that he wanted a chance to contribute and play elsewhere.

In the four games White played this season, he recorded 12 total tackles, two passes defensed and zero interceptions. He allowed nine catches for 151 yards and four touchdowns, committing five penalties in coverage, too.

The Rams signed him to a one-year, $4.25 million contract this offseason after he spent seven years with the Buffalo Bills.

Ravens acquire CB Tre’Davious White from Rams for a 7th-round pick

Ravens acquire CB Tre’Davious White from Rams for a 2026 7th-round pick

The Ravens were looking for more cornerback depth, and after missing out on Marshon Lattimore, the team acquired a former Pro Bowl cover guy.

Adam Schefter reports that the Rams are trading Tre’Davious White to Baltimore for a 2026 seventh-round pick.

Baltimore has the 32nd-ranked pass defense in the NFL, and White started the first four games of the season for the Rams, but he has been inactive for their last four games.

Tampa.
