Philadelphia Eagles waive WR Travis Fulgham

Philadelphia Eagles waive WR Travis Fulgham

It’s not necessarily breaking news, but the Travis Fulgham era could be over in Philadelphia after the Eagles waived the veteran wide receiver.

A breakout player for the Eagles who waived three times last summer, Fulgham had 29 catches for 435 yards and four touchdowns in his first 5 games last season and was among the top-selling jerseys.

After the breakout, Fulgham’s production slowed tremendously, as he only had nine catches in eight games after the bye.

Entering his first training camp under Nick Sirianni, Fulgham was a perceived starter, but he quickly lost ground to Quez Watkins and others.

Eagles training camp: Jalen Reagor on playing in the slot; Getting back to his roots

Can Nick Sirianni unlock Eagles’ WR Jalen Reagor by playing him more in the slot?

The Eagles have several worthy candidates to play out of the slot, but Jalen Reagor is the one guy that could break out from seeing more time in space.

After a recent training camp practice, Reagor hinted at getting back to his “roots” of making big plays and confirming that he’ll see time as a slot wide river. A fast-twitch player with breakaway speed, Reagor can be best served in space, with the opportunity to accumulate yards after the catch.

It wouldn’t be a total move from the X or Z position, but it could allow the Eagles to at times, have a mismatch inside against slower slot or nickel cornerbacks.

Last season Greg Ward led Philadelphia receivers in receptions and he’s also among the league leaders in shortest routes run over the past two seasons. The Eagles need to be more explosive overall and getting Reagor matched up in space could do wonders for the former TCU star in year two.

Philadelphia actually passed on Justin Jefferson in the 2020 NFL Draft because the feeling was that Reagor could provide more value to the offense, as an outside receiver.

NFL analyst Greg Cosell on Eagles WR Travis Fulgham and his potential for a breakout season in 2021

NFL analyst Greg Cosell on Eagles WR Travis Fulgham and his potential for a breakout season in 2021

NFL Analyst Greg Cosell had some nice things to say about Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Travis Fulgham during a recent podcast appearance.

During an appearance on the “Inside the Bird Podcast”, Cosell sounded off on the former Old Dominion wide-out, praising Fulgham’s potential at wide receiver despite him fading away as the second half of the season wore on.

“I liked what I saw. I can’t speak to work ethic, I can’t speak to professionalism, I can’t speak to any of that … but Fulgham is a big kid, runs well, I thought he showed good cutting ability, I thought he made contested catches. There were traits there to like. I can’t speak to what happened after [those four weeks], but there is talent there, clearly.”

Fulgham joined the Eagles after initially being waived by Howie Roseman, but upon his return, he exploded onto the scene.

Fulgham made his debut against the 49ers on Sunday Night Football where he had his first reception and scored his first touchdown. The following week Fulgham had 10 catches, 152 yards, and a touchdown against Pittsburgh.

He ended the season with 38 catches, 539 yards, and four touchdowns before seeing limited playing time with the return of Alshon Jeffery.

With DeVonta Smith on the roster and Jalen Reagor having a full offseason to improve, the physical wideout could find more room working from the slot and in open space.

Eagles 2021 training camp preview: Wide Receiver

Eagles 2021 training camp preview: Looking at the Wide Receiver position

With Eagles training camp about two weeks away, we’re taking a look at each positional group by previewing what’s to come.

Quarterback, Running Back.

Today we focus on a talented, but unknown wide receivers group that could finally take the next step thanks to DeVonta Smith’s arrival.

Philadelphia Eagles have the youngest WR unit in the NFL

Philadelphia Eagles have the youngest WR unit in the NFL

The Philadelphia Eagles have the youngest wide receiving group in the league, based on average age and that could translate to big-time potential over the next few years.

Featuring Jhamon Ausbon (21), DeVonta Smith (22), Jalen Reagor (22), Quez Watkins (23), JJ Arcega-Whiteside (24), Travis Fulgham (25 ), John Hightower (25), Greg Ward (25), and Michael Walker (24) — this current receiving corps is full of “young blood”.

Under new head coach Nick Sirianni, this year’s Eagles wide receiving corps could see a rise in production as a whole compared to recent years based on the rookie head coach’s past history.

During his San Diego Chargers days, Sirianni helped Tyrell Williams have one of his best seasons, recording 69 receptions for 1059 yards to go along with seven TD’s, and Dontrelle Inman — 58 catches for 810 yards to pair with 25 first downs also thrived.

Keenan Allen, one of the league’s best receivers, had his best season under Sirianni during 2017 (the year after he tore his ACL).

It all points to a recipe of greatness for what can become the leagues, not just youngest, but one of the more elite units in the NFL. Sirianni has placed emphasis on playmaking coming from this year’s offensive unit, and that means this wide receiving group will make an instant impact.

Travis Fulgham, Jalen Reagor feel very ‘confident’ about Eagles offense for 2021

Travis Fulgham, Jalen Reagor are both feeling pretty confident about the Eagles offense for 2021

As the Eagles get prepared for the 2021 NFL offseason that includes a salary cap purge and indoctrination of totally new staff, the young guys on offense are putting in the work.

As NFL draft pundits dissect Jalen Hurts’ ability at quarterback, his most talented assets on the outside aren’t buying the hype.

Travis Fulgham and Jalen Reagor took to Twitter on Friday to confirm that offense or expected production on that side of the ball, is the least of their problems.

Fulgham will look for more consistency, production, and playing time in 2021, while Reagor’s goal should be to improve as a route runner and offer the explosive plays that made him a huge name in the draft process last spring.

Greg Ward will be the veteran of the group, while J.J. Arcega-Whiteside enters his third season, having contributed 14 receptions in his first two years.

6 Eagles who could thrive in Shane Steichen’s offense

Dallas Goedert is among six Eagles who could thrive in Shane Steichen’s offense.

Nick Sirianni is expected to call the offensive plays for the Eagles and he’ll have experienced help after naming Shane Steichen to the position of offensive coordinator.

There have been discussions surrounding whether Steichen or Pep Hamilton should truly get the credit for Justin Herbert’s development as a quarterback during his rookie season.

What can’t be disputed is Steichen’s presence in Philadelphia and his offensive philosophy.

We’ve highlighted six Eagles offensive players who should be able to thrive in Steichen and Sirianni’s offensive system.

Doug Pederson on Travis Fulgham’s reduced snaps: Alshon Jeffery is ‘healthier’ and playing better

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson says Travis Fulgham has played less because Alshon Jeffery is healthier and

Travis Fulgham was on pace for a 1,000-yard receiving season following Week 8 of the 2020 NFL regular season, but that momentum has quickly come to a halt with Alshon Jeffery’s return to the lineup.

Since Jeffery’s return, Fulgham has four catches, for 32-yards and is coming off a game against New Orleans, where he wasn’t targeted at all.

On Wednesday, head coach Doug Pederson was asked about Fulgham being phased out of the Eagles’ offense. Pederson attributed it to Jeffery being “healthier” and playing better.

Fulgham’s targets have diminished and it appears that the Eagles believe Jeffery is the better player at this point, thus giving the team the best shot at victory.
