Travis Etienne Jr injury: Jaguars RB will play Monday vs. Bengals

The Jaguars’ third-year running back briefly left Week 12 with an injury, but Doug Pederson says Travis Etienne is good to go for Monday.

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. will play Monday night against the Cincinnati Bengals, coach Doug Pederson told reporters Saturday.

Etienne, 24, went to the locker room with a ribs injury during the Jaguars’ Week 12 win. While he was ruled questionable to return by the team, Etienne was back on the field before halftime and finished the game with 86 yards from scrimmage.

While Pederson said Etienne will play through the injury that has limited him in practice, the Jaguars have also increasingly leaned on veteran backup D’Ernest Johnson and third-round rookie Tank Bigsby in recent weeks.

In each of the Jaguars’ last two games, Johnson had got eight touches and recorded a reception that picked up at least 30 yards. Bigsby had a season-high nine touches in Jacksonville’s Week 11 win against the Tennessee Titans.

Etienne enters Week 13 with 1,038 yards from scrimmage and eight total touchdowns. The Bengals are last in the NFL in rushing yards allowed and 27th in yards allowed per carry.

Jaguars add Brenton Strange to injury report Friday

Brenton Strange was one of four Jaguars players limited in practice Friday.

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie tight end Brenton Strange was a new addition to the injury report Friday with a foot issue.

Strange was one of four players limited, along with running back Travis Etienne Jr., Tyson Campbell, and Luke Farrell.

While starting tight end Evan Engram is one of the best pass catchers in the NFL at the position, the addition of Strange to the injury report raises eyebrows because Farrell is also dealing with an injury. Strange and Farrell primarily see the field as blockers, so the team could be limited in that regard if one or both players are unable to play Monday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Josh Pederson, son of head coach Doug Pederson, is the only tight end on the practice squad who could be elevated to the active roster if the team is in need of another player at the position.

For the Bengals, all eyes are on Tee Higgins who is working to come back from injuries that kept him out the last three weeks.

Higgins told reporters Thursday that he plans to play Monday and his full practice Friday seems to indicate he’s on track.

Travis Etienne Jr., 2 other Jaguars limited in Thursday practice

Travis Etienne Jr. was one of three Jaguars players limited Thursday.

Running back Travis Etienne Jr. was one of three Jacksonville Jaguars players limited in practice Thursday due to a ribs injury he suffered in the team’s Week 12 win against the Houston Texans.

“I’m feeling better, I’m just working day in and day out to get better so I can get back Monday and be my best self,” Etienne said after practice. “If I can go, I’m gonna go. If I can’t, we got great backs behind me that are gonna do their jobs. That’s what I love about this team: everyone’s a great professional and we’re all in this together to win the game and they’ll be ready to go if I’m not.”

Along with Etienne, cornerback Tyson Campbell and tight end Luke Farrell were limited Thursday.

Campbell has missed four of the last five games due to his nagging hamstring injury. On Thursday, he worked to the side with trainers at the beginning of practice before joining his position group.

The Cincinnati Bengals listed a dozen players on their Thursday injury report, although four were due to rest and four practiced fully.

Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins missed the last three weeks due to his injuries.

7 Jaguars most deserving of 2024 Pro Bowl Games votes

Which Jaguars players have your vote?

Voting for the 2024 Pro Bowl Games officially opened Monday and can be done right here.

Last year, despite earning an AFC South title and a playoff win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Jacksonville Jaguars had zero players make the initial Pro Bowl roster. Eventually, injuries and the Super Bowl opened up enough spots that quarterback Trevor Lawrence and return specialist Jamal Agnew earned the honors.

The 2023 season should probably be different, though.

Unlike last year, the Jaguars won’t need to win five straight games to claw back above .500 and into the playoff picture. Jacksonville is rolling with an 8-3 record and plenty of deserving candidates.

In a conference with quarterbacks like C.J. Stroud, Josh Allen, Tua Tagovailoa, Patrick Mahomes, and Justin Herbert all putting up big numbers, it could take a lot for Lawrence to get another nod. But these seven Jaguars players deserve to get in when the rosters are announced later this season:

Studs and duds in the Jaguars’ 24-21 win vs. Texans

Who stood out most in the Jaguars’ 24-21 win against the Texans?

It was a roller coaster ride Sunday, but the Jacksonville Jaguars came out on top by literal inches. A 58-yard field goal try from the Houston Texans’ Matt Ammendola would’ve tied the game in the final minute of regulation, but clanged off the bottom upright, securing the Jaguars a 24-21 win.

There was no shortage of standout performances for Jacksonville as it racked up 445 yards of total offense. The game was also a little too close for comfort, though.

Here’s who stood out most Sunday at NRG Stadium both in a good way and in a not-so-good way in the Jaguars’ huge divisional win:

Twitter reacts to wild end of 1st half in Jaguars’ Week 12 vs. Texans

What did you think of the Jaguars’ play call on the last play of the first half?

It seemed the Jacksonville Jaguars were hoping only to get into field goal range in the last 10 seconds of the second quarter Sunday. Facing a third-and-eight situation on their own 42-yard line, the Jaguars need another chunk of yardage to give Brandon McManus a chance.

Instead, they got 57 yards when Christian Kirk got behind the Houston Texans’ defense and stiff-armed Tavierre Thomas for about 15 yards before finally going out of bounds at the 1-yard line.

Suddenly, the Jaguars were faced with a tough call. Go for it on a one-play opportunity to get in the end zone and potentially take a 20-7 lead into halftime, or settle for a field goal and go into the locker room up 16-7. Head coach Doug Pederson chose the former, but Travis Etienne Jr. was stuffed on a pitch play.

Instead of a two-score lead, the Jaguars took a 13-7 lead into halftime and there were no shortage of takes on social media about the final seconds of the second quarter. Here’s a sampling:

Jaguars cite execution, ball security as main problems for offense

The Jaguars are focusing on finding consistency in the offense after a 34-3 loss to the 49ers.

While no one thing can be the root of a 34-3 loss, the Jacksonville Jaguars recognize offensive hiccups were an issue Sunday, as they have been much of the year.

Jacksonville suffered its worst loss of the season against the San Francisco 49ers last week. The offense couldn’t score, and the defense couldn’t keep the 49ers out of the endzone.

The Jaguars managed 221 total offensive yards compared to San Francisco’s 437-yard total. Jacksonville also committed four turnovers in the loss.

While the Jaguars don’t think the offense is a lost cause, they acknowledged there’s work to do.

“It’s been there, it’s been on track on times,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said. “It just comes down to the preparation. … It just comes down to the execution.”

Pederson mentioned more consistent offensive line play as a way to help the offense take a step forward.

“Having five guys that would’ve been here for nine games, there would be more continuity,” Pederson said. “Really just understanding that there’s a lot of communication that has to go on up front, getting all of that down and the timing. It continues to improve but we can definitely get better there.”

Jacksonville running back Travis Etienne Jr. pointed to ball security as a way the Jaguars could get the most out of their offense. The Jags committed two fumbles and two interceptions in Sunday’s loss.

“There’s so many times that we just beat ourselves,” Etienne said. “If we don’t turn the ball over, we put points on the board and we’re not even talking about how the offense didn’t get going, the offense is going. For us, we just have to work on ball security, that’s something we can easily fix and that we are going to fix.”

Like Pederson, Etienne isn’t concerned about the offense finding its form after its disappointing performance against San Francisco.

“We know the work that we put in and we see what we can do, you see flashes of it week-in and week-out,” Etienne said. “I feel like no one is worried about if we could get going.”

Lions stole a play from the Jaguars’ playoff win vs. Chargers

“It was that same play, and they hit us on it.”

Ten months ago, the Jacksonville Jaguars crowded three players into the backfield behind Trevor Lawrence on a must-have fourth down play against the Los Angeles Chargers. With the defense expecting a quarterback sneak or a run up the middle, the Jaguars fooled them with Travis Etienne Jr. racing off the right side for a 25-yard gain that sealed the game.

On Sunday, the Detroit Lions used the same concept to burn the Chargers on a fourth down of their own.

“We got that play to end the game in Jacksonville,” Chargers safety Derwin James said after the Lions’ 41-38 win, via The Athletic. “It was that same play, and they hit us on it.”

It’s not the first time the Jaguars offense has inspired other NFL coaches. The Kansas City Chiefs scored twice against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl with a play they saw the Jaguars use to get Jamal Agnew into the end zone in Philadelphia earlier that year.

It’s a copycat league and the Jaguars’ breakout success on offense in 2022 is still proving to be a pain in the Chargers’ neck.

Studs and duds in the Jaguars’ 20-10 win vs. Steelers

Who stood out most in the Jaguars’ fifth straight win?

The Jacksonville Jaguars turned the ball over three times and failed to score a touchdown on three trips to the red zone, yet still managed to pick up a fifth straight win Sunday.

With a 20-10 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jaguars are rolling into a much-needed Week 9 bye with a 6-2 record, a hefty lead in the AFC South, and a share of first place in the AFC.

Not much is going wrong in Duval, but the Jaguars aren’t quite blowing out teams either. Against a Steelers team that went three-and-out on its first four possessions and turned the ball over on its last three, why was the game in contention so long?

The positives certainly outweigh the negatives for the Jaguars, but the latter isn’t non-existent. Here’s who stood out most in the team’s Week 8 win at Acrisure Stadium:

Our favorite same-game parlay to bet on the Jaguars in Week 8

Will the Jaguars run wild against the Steelers’ shaky run defense?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking for a fifth straight win this weekend when they travel to play in Pittsburgh for the first time since a January 2018 playoff win.

Standing in their way is a 4-2 Pittsburgh Steelers team that has won four games decided by a touchdown or less and was blown out in 23- and 24-point losses.

Unlike usual iterations of the Steelers, this version has struggled to run the ball (29th in yards per carry) and stop the run (27th in yards allowed per carry). While Travis Etienne Jr. enters with a run of three straight two-touchdown games, the Jaguars haven’t been stellar at bulldozing running room.

If there are several bets you like in the Jaguars’ game against the Steelers this week, a fun way to play them is by parlaying them together. BetMGM offers same-game parlays that you can build yourself, including wagers such as the over/under, spread and player props.
