Colts sign CB Ryan Smith to the practice squad

The Colts made a change on the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerback Ryan Smith to the practice squad and waived linebacker Forrest Rhyne from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Smith was in the building Monday for a workout, and it appears he did enough to warrant a spot on the practice squad.

Smith was a fourth-round pick with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2016 NFL draft out of North Carolina Central. He spent five seasons with the Buccaneers before joining the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021.

In 77 career games (17 starts), Smith has recorded one interception, 12 passes defended, 122 tackles (102 solo) and one tackle for loss. He has experience playing both defense and a prominent role on special teams.

Colts sign RB Phillip Lindsay to the practice squad

Phillip Lindsay joins the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed running back Phillip Lindsay to the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Though it was a surprise that Lindsay ultimately was released during final roster cuts at the end of August, general manager Chris Ballard mentioned in his preseason press conference that a reunion on the practice squad was still on the table.

Lindsay spent the majority of the offseason with the Colts while serving as the RB3 throughout training camp and the preseason. It was a mild shock to see him released in favor of Deon Jackson, but Lindsay’s lack of special teams work was the reason.

Lindsay will join undrafted rookie D’vonte Price and is the final player added to the practice squad.

Colts claim OT Luke Tenuta off waivers

The Colts claimed OT Luke Tenuta off waivers from the Bills.

The Indianapolis Colts claimed offensive tackle Luke Tenuta off the waiver wire from the Buffalo Bills and released cornerback Tony Brown, the team announced Wednesday.

Tenuta was the only successful claim the Colts made following final roster cuts. General manager Chris Ballard wouldn’t say if they made other claims during his press conference Wednesday.

Tenuta, 6-foot-9 and 322 pounds, was a sixth-round pick with the Bills in the 2022 NFL draft. Despite that size, the Virginia Tech product has 32 7/8-inch arms. Failing to meet the 34-inch arm threshold for tackles is something the Colts have been content about overlooking if they like a player enough.

Tenuta will round out the roster and the depth on the offensive line. It’s likely he will be competing for a spot as the backup right tackle behind starter Braden Smith.

Brown is somewhat of a surprise cut as a corresponding move. There’s a chance he returns, but the Colts now have a cornerback room with five players, including undrafted rookie Dallis Flowers.

The Carolina Panthers signed veteran defensive tackle Caraun Reid earlier today. In a corresponding move, the team waived former Wisconsin Badger linebacker Chris Orr.

Orr was brought in as an undrafted free agent after the 2020 NFL draft. The former Badger was then active for three games during the season, that coming before bouncing back-and-forth to and from the team’s practice squad.

The former Wisconsin star will now search for a new NFL home with the season nearly three months away.

Former Wisconsin CB sings a reserve/future contract with the Indianapolis Colts

Former Wisconsin Badger cornerback Nick Nelson is back in the NFL as the Indianapolis Colts signed him to a reserve/future contract entering

Another Wisconsin product was signed to a reserve/future contract by an NFL team this week, joining Carolina Panther Chris Orr and Houston Texan Beau Benzschawel—former Wisconsin Badger and now-Indianapolis Colt defensive back Nick Nelson.

Nelson played in 14 games for the Badgers back in 2017 after transferring from Hawaii, recording 35 tackles, 1 tackle-for-loss, 21 passes defended and 1 punt return touchdown.

The cornerback was then signed by the Las Vegas Raiders after the 2018 NFL draft before bouncing around to and from their practice squad.

His Raider career ended with 12 games played, 3 starts, 20 tackles, 1 pass defended and one fumble recovery.

Nelson now gets a shot to enter camp with the Colts and look to make an NFL active roster for the first time since December of 2019.

Former Wisconsin linebacker is back with Tampa Bay heading into the NFL Playoffs

Former Wisconsin Badger linebacker Jack Cichy was re-signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday as they prepare for NFL Week 17 and the

Former Wisconsin linebacker Jack Cichy has struggled to stay healthy during the first couple years of his NFL career, combining to play in only 15 games since he was drafted in 2018.

He hasn’t moved around much, though, as until this year the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had held him on their injured reserve and waited for him to get healthy and be able to contribute.

The first time we saw the former Badger linebacker a subject of an NFL transfer release was back on December 3, 2020 when the New England Patriots claimed him off waivers and placed him on the practice squad.

Yesterday, Cichy was the subject yet again when the Buccaneers brought him back from the Patriots’ practice squad and added him to their active roster.

The former Badger is healthy and will now get a shot at aiding the Bucs in their first playoff run since 2007.

Chiefs sign RB DeAndre Washington from practice squad

It’s no coincidence that this move is coming during Raiders week.

The Kansas City Chiefs are making another roster move ahead of their Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs have signed RB DeAndre Washington to the 53-man roster from their practice squad. Washington, a former fifth-round draft pick by the then Oakland Raiders, was one of the few free agents added by Kansas City this offseason.

Washington played college football at Texas Tech and was a teammate of Chiefs starting QB Patrick Mahomes. Many believed he’d earn a role on the active roster this season because of his chemistry with Mahomes, but he was ultimately released during 53-man roster cuts. He signed to the practice squad knowing that he had the best chance to win in Kansas City.

It’s no coincidence that the Chiefs chose to elevate Washington before their clash with his former team. He appeared in 55 games for the Raiders over the past four seasons, rushing for 1,122 yards and seven touchdowns, adding another 613 yards and one touchdown through the air. Whatever his role may be in this game, you’d have to expect that it’s important to him to get a shot to go up against Las Vegas this weekend.

Right now, the Chiefs haven’t made a corresponding move and they don’t necessarily need to. They received a roster exemption for Bashaud Breeland, who is coming off of suspension. That roster exemption is good through Monday, Oct. 12. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo mentioned today that the team could ease Breeland back into action.

Chiefs waive WR Marcus Kemp from 53-man roster

Kemp could return to Kansas City on the practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released WR Marcus Kemp from the 53-man roster following the Week 4 contest against the New England Patriots. The move came down on the NFL’s official transaction report on Tuesday.

Kemp made the 53-man roster ahead of the 2020 NFL season after signing on as a late addition during training camp. He first signed on with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Hawaii back in 2017.

The 6-4 and 210-pound receiver spent the bulk of the 2017 season on the practice squad. He’d first make the 53-man roster in 2018, appearing in all 16 games for Kansas City as one of the starting gunners on special teams. He looked primed for a bigger role in 2019, but suffered a torn ACL in the preseason, knocking him out for the entire season.

In 2020, Kemp’s role has also been primarily on special teams with 55 total snaps and two tackles on the season. He’s eligible to return to the Chiefs practice squad if he clears waivers. They currently have a spot clear for him on the practice squad as well.

The Chiefs haven’t yet made a corresponding move on the 53-man roster. Bashaud Breeland did come off of the suspended list today, but the team received a roster exemption until Monday, Oct. 12. Kansas City doesn’t need to create a roster spot for him until then, though it’d make sense that this move clears a spot for Breeland.
