Lions activate Everson Griffen to 53-man roster, elevate CB Tramaine Brock and C Evan Brown

Detroit Lions activate EDGE Everson Griffen to the 53-man roster, elevate corner Tramaine Brock and center Evan Brown for Week 16.

Happy holidays!

Detroit Lions announced that they have activated EDGE Everson Griffen to the 53-man roster, and elevated two practice squad players for Week 16: corner Tramaine Brock and center Evan Brown.

After contracting the COVID-19 virus, Griffen spent nearly two weeks on the reserve list before being cleared to return to practice on Wednesday. Because of the return to action protocols surrounding COVID-19, Griffen had a commissioner’s permission roster exemption while he re-acclimated back to football and did not count against the 53-man roster.

In order for him to be eligible to play on Saturday, he needed to be activated to the 53-man roster (which is today’s move) and a corresponding move would be required —  which the Lions created by releasing running back Jonathan Williams yesterday.

With corner Darryl Roberts questionable to play, the Lions only had three healthy corners: Amani Oruwariye, Justin Coleman, and Mike Ford — who was injured all week but doesn’t carry an injury designation into this game.

Brock gives them a fifth option at corner, depth on special teams, and insurance against Roberts’ injury.

Ragnow is still mending his fractured throat, and despite a limited practice on Thursday, he remains questionable to play. Joe Dahl replaced Ragnow in the starting lineup last week, but the elevation of Brown gives the Lions a true center option in case of further injury.

Detroit Lions make 3 practice squad moves, protect 4 in Week 16

Detroit Lions made a series of practice moves on Tuesday, adding C Jon Toth, releasing C Marcus Martin, placing LB Anthony Pittman on the COVID-19 list, and protecting four players in Week 16.

Detroit Lions made a series of practice moves on Tuesday, adding center Jon Toth, releasing center Marcus Martin, placing linebacker Anthony Pittman on the COVID-19 list, and protecting four players in Week 16.

The Lions protected players include, center Evan Brown, defensive tackle Albert Huggins, corner Tramaine Brock, and safety Bobby Price.

With Frank Ragnow still dealing with a throat injury, the Lions turned to Joe Dahl to start at center last week, and elevated natural center Martin to act as a reserve. Unfortunately, Martin has exhausted his elevation eligibility in 2020, and the Lions released him to make room for Toth.

Toth (6-5, 310-pounds) played center at Kentucky, was undrafted in 2017, and joined the Eagles. After just over a year on Philadelphia’s practice squad, he joined the Jets practice squad in 2018. He also spent time in the XFL with the D.C. Defenders, before joining the Browns earlier this year.

Toth will compete with Brown (who is protected this week) for a potential elevation spot in week 16. Neither has been elevated this year.

Brock has also not used an elevation this year, but with corners Darryl Roberts and Mike Ford banged up (both were estimated to be limited on Tuesday) they may need him as an elevation option this week. Brock will be competing with fellow practice squader Alex Meyers — who was posterized by Derrick Henry last week.

Huggins was elevated once by the Lions in Week 12, while Price was a standard elevation in Week 13, and a COVID-19 replacement elevation in Week 14, meaning each has one standard elevation remaining as COVID-19 elevations don’t count against the standard numbers.

Pittman was placed on the COVID-19 list and per an NFL/NFLPA agreement, teams do not differentiate between if a player tested positive for COVID-19 or if he had a close contact exposure, so it’s unclear how long he will be out at this time.

However, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, “One Lions player and one non-player tested positive for COVID-19, per league source. The team facility is closed and players and coaches are meeting virtually, with contact tracing ongoing.”

So, if Pittman did indeed test positive, his season could potentially be over. But, if the report is wrong, and it is a close contact exposure — like Matthew Stafford, Jarrad Davis, and Jalen Elliott earlier this year — it’s possible he could return before the season’s conclusion.

Lions sign veteran CB Tramaine Brock to practice sqaud, release CB Dee Virgin

The Detroit Lions announced that they have signed veteran corner Tramaine Brock to the practice squad and released corner Dee Virgin in a corresponding move.

The Detroit Lions announced that they have signed 11-year veteran corner Tramaine Brock to the practice squad and released corner Dee Virgin in a corresponding move.

Brock (6-0, 188) spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2010. Since then, he has spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, and most recently the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brock never made it on the field in Jacksonville — he was injured in camp, placed on injured reserve, and eventually released — but he is now healthy and could be a contributor in Detroit as early as this weekend, due to the injuries at the position.

Over Brock’s 117 career games played, he has started 56, including 11 during the 2019 season. Despite him joining the team late in the week, he could be a fourth/emergency option due to his wealth of experience.

Virgin has been with the Lions the past three seasons, mostly being utilized as a dynamic special teamer. Unfortunately, the Lions exhausted his ability to be elevated to the active roster this season — calling him up in Week 2 and 12 — and he became expendable. Expect him to catch on somewhere else in the NFL quickly based on his special team promise.

The makeshift front office for the Detroit Lions continues to operate at full speed. The Lions hosted three players in Allen Park on Thursday for auditions with the free agents.

Two defensive backs were officially designated as tryouts with the team. Veteran cornerback Tramaine Brock and fellow CB Josh Hawkins tried out.

Brock has started 53 games in 10 seasons, most of them with the San Francisco 49ers from 2013-2016. The 32-year-old started 11 combined games for Arizona and Tennessee in 2019 but has not played yet in 2020.

Detroit also welcomed former Florida Gators power back Jordan Scarlett for a workout. Scarlett washed out of Carolina quickly as a 2019 fifth-round pick.

The Lions are handling transactions and tryouts by a committee that includes VP of Player Personnel Kyle O’Brien, Director of Player Personnel Lance Newmark and Senior Personnel Executive Jimmy Raye, with President Rod Wood overseeing the group.

Tre Herndon discusses his growth after experience he gained in 2019

Tre Herndon met with the media Saturday and discussed the experience he gained in 2019 among other notable topics.

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Tre Herndon has entered camp as one of the top players to watch due to the cornerback position being unsettled next to projected starter and first-round rookie C.J. Henderson. Heading into Year 3, Herndon will at least have a leg up on most of the Jags’ corners experience wise after registering 14 starts in 2019, most of which came due to the Jalen Ramsey saga.

After Saturday’s practice session, Herndon got to speak about the experience he gained in his second season and how it’s helped him up to this point.

“I feel like last year was definitely a good step for me, a good stride, just getting really my first year [of] consistent game action and starting,” Herndon said. “I feel like it was good for me. I feel like definitely knowing the game, kind of feeling that game speed, tendencies, those kinds of things, I was able to take a step with. Now [I’m] just stepping on top of that, adding more with my technique, being more consistent, being more consistent in film study now that I have a year under my belt.”

In the early stages of 2019, Herndon had his share of struggles, but it he began to improve as the season progressed. Now, it will be a matter of transferring his progress into training camp, and if he does, it should be enough to make him a starter Week 1 against Indy.

With three weeks left before the start of the season, however, there will be some competition for Herndon starting with veteran Tramaine Brock. The veteran, who just signed this month, will bring 56 career starts to the table. Of those starts, 11 came last season as he played for both the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans.

Heading forward it will be interesting to see how the battle between the two shapes Herndon heading into 2020. Right now, Brock may have the edge but if there is anything we’ve learned from last year it’s the fact that Herndon is a competitor who is more than capable of improving week in and week out.

Jaguars sign former Titans CB Tramaine Brock

Tramaine Brock played in seven games (including playoffs) with the Titans last season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed former Tennessee Titans cornerback Tramaine Brock, the team announced on Sunday.

Brock was claimed off waivers by the Titans late last season after the team’s secondary was decimated by injuries to Adoree’ Jackson and Malcolm Butler.

Brock played in seven games for Tennessee (including playoffs) and performed admirably , although he certainly had his issues, particularly with tackling. In four regular season games, Brock finished with 13 combined tackles, two passes defended and two tackles for loss.

The Jaguars had a clear need at cornerback after Rashaan Melvin opted out of the 2020 season. Brock figures to play a significant role as a result.

Of course, being that he’s with an in-division rival, the Titans will see Brock twice in 2020, with the first meeting against the Jaguars set to take place in Week 2 at Nissan Stadium. Tennessee will go to Jacksonville in Week 14.

Brock spent the majority of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, but has also played for the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals.

Jaguars make Tramaine Brock signing official, announce other roster moves

The Jags have officially signed veteran cornerback Tramaine Brock who will bring over a decade of experience to the team.

After bringing him in for a visit, the Jacksonville Jaguars have made the signing of veteran cornerback Tramaine Brock official. Additionally, the team announced that they waived rookie cornerback Kobe Williams, would be bringing defensive tackle Carl Davis back, and the signing of Caraun Reid (see details here).

Brock is a player who has a connection with Jags director of player personnel, Trent Baalke, who was in the San Fransisco 49ers’ front office when Brock played for the team. He’ll bring in over a decade worth of experience to a Jags young cornerback group that is spearheaded with Tre Herndon and rookie C.J. Henderson, who most believe could be the starting duo in the regular season.

Brock has been a journeyman player in the league making notable stops with the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and Arizona Cardinals to name a few. He’ll enter the 2020 season with 56 starts, 262 total tackles, and 11 picks on his career.

Davis is a player who entered this offseason on the Jags’ roster, but they released him on May 12. However, with them losing defensive tackle Al Woods, who opted out due to concerns for the coronavirus, and Dontavius Russell and Brian Price to injured reserve, the team seemingly wanted to add a familiar face. Before he was released, he had been with the Jags since November of 2019, playing in two games and registering a tackle.

As for Williams, he was one of the more intriguing undrafted rookie free-agent signings of April’s draft. With respectable coverage grades coming out of Arizona State, some thought he could compete for a spot on the back end of the roster but Brock’s signing gave them a comfortable number at corner.

The following roster moves now puts the Jags at 80 players, a number they had until Aug. 16 to get to.

Report: Veteran CB Tramaine Brock visiting Jags

The Jags are back on the free-agent market looking for a veteran CB and may have found one in former Titan Tramaine Brock.

With veteran corner Rashaan Melvin opting out Thursday, the Jacksonville Jaguars have decided to re-visit the free-agent market for a replacement. Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the team has brought in former Tennessee Titans cornerback Tramaine Brock for a visit, and if all goes well, he could be a Jaguar very soon.

Brock, 31, entered the league in 2010 as an undrafted free-agent with the San Francisco 49ers. He was with the organization when Jags director of player personnel, Trent Baalke, was in the front office both as a vice president of player personnel and general manager. Afterward, he spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and Arizona Cardinals.

Brock will enter 2020 with 56 starts, 262 total tackles, and 11 picks on his career. If signed, he would bring a great deal of experience to the Jags cornerback room which currently has first-round rookie C.J. Henderson and third-year player Tre Herndon set to start. They also selected a cornerback Josiah Scott in the fourth-round of the 2020 NFL Draft and have three undrafted rookies battling to potentially make the team in Amari Henderson, Luq Barcoo, and Kobe Williams.

Report: Former Titans CB Tramaine Brock is visiting Jaguars

Brock played in seven games (including playoffs) for the Titans last season.

Veteran cornerback Tramaine Brock, who spent part of the 2019 season with the Tennessee Titans, is reportedly visiting the Jacksonville Jaguars and could sign if all goes well.

The report comes from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Brock was claimed off waivers by the Titans last season after he was cut by the Arizona Cardinals.

The 31-year-old played in seven games for Tennessee (including playoffs) and had a pretty significant role with the team dealing with injuries in the secondary to Adoree’ Jackson and Malcolm Butler.

Brock played well, but he would have been no more than a depth piece in 2020 had he returned to Nashville. He could play a much more important role with the Jaguars, especially after Rashaan Melvin opted out of the upcoming season.

Prior to joining the Titans last year, Brock spent the majority of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, but also played for the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos.

NFL’s conference title games will feature several former Broncos

Broncos fans will recognize several former Denver players and coaches during the AFC and NFC championship games this weekend.

The Broncos did not reach the playoffs this year but the team will be well-represented by former coaches and players in the NFL’s conference championship games this weekend.

49ers center Ben Garland and Emmanuel Sanders both played in Denver before landing in San Francisco. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is the son of former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. Defensive backs/passing game coordinator Joe Woods coached in Denver from 2015-2018.

Wes Welker, who was a key member of the Broncos’ record-breaking offense in 2013, now serves as San Francisco’s wide receivers coach.

In Green Bay, the Packers have three offensive linemen who spent time in Denver: Billy Turner, Jared Veldheer and John Leglue.

The Titans have four former Broncos on their roster: punter Brett Kern, wide receiver Kalif Raymond, linebacker Wesley Woodyard and cornerback Tramaine Brock. Kern earned first-team All-Pro honors and the third Pro Bowl selection of his career this season.

The Titans will take on the Chiefs in the AFC title game on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 1:05 p.m. MT on CBS. The 49ers will face the Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday at 4:40 p.m. MT on Fox.
