NCAA Tournament Bubble Watch: Notre Dame headed for First Four?

Not the development anyone wanted.

Notre Dame didn’t have a good week after falling to Virginia Tech on Thursday and then having a handful of other bubble teams play well early on.  Where does that leave the Irish as we hit the weekend?

USA TODAY has their updated bracket projections out on Saturday morning and the good news is the Irish are in their field of 68.  However, they are by the skin of their teeth as one of the last four in the updated projection.

Virginia Tech beating North Carolina didn’t do Notre Dame any favors last night as the Hokies now meet Duke in the ACC Tournament final.  Texas A&M reaching the semi-finals of the SEC Tournament should turn the Irish into big Arkansas fans today.

Oklahoma falling to Texas Tech should be beneficial for the Irish after the last few days that haven’t gone according to plan.

A week that started with Notre Dame thinking they may be as high as a nine-seed now sees them perhaps heading to Dayton for the First Four.  Stay tuned…

Big Ten Hockey Tournament: Wisconsin goalie stands on head to beat Notre Dame

Win or go home Saturday for the Irish.

Notre Dame put a season high 50 shots on goal against Wisconsin in the opening round of the Big Ten hockey tournament Friday night but it didn’t matter as Jared Moe turned away 49 of those shots in the 3-1 Badgers victory.

The complete writeup below is courtesy of Notre Dame athletics:

SOUTH BEND, Ind.  – No. 7 Notre Dame Hockey fell to Wisconsin, 3-1, in the best-of-three series opener of the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday night at Compton Family Ice Arena (3,634).

The Irish earned a season high by putting 50 shots on goal and held the Badgers to 28 on the night but Jared Moe’s 49 saves backstopped Wisconsin to the win.

Graham Slaggert tied the game, 1-1, just past the 13 minute mark of the second period, but the Badgers scored 38 seconds to take back a lead they would not relinquish.

“They played well so give them their due,” head coach Jeff Jackson said after the game. “It was playoff hockey, and you have to be prepared. Anything can happen in the playoffs. The goaltender played well, they keep you on the outside and we have to find a way to penetrate that.”

Graduate student Matthew Galajda made 24 saves for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame (25-10-0) finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while Wisconsin (10-22-3) was 0-for-1.

How It Happened

Five minutes into the opening frame Cam Burke nearly got the Irish on the board after following up a Max Ellis shot on goal, but following video review it was ruled the puck never crossed the goal line after hitting the far post.

Justin Janicke took a nice feed from Jack Adams in the high slot and rang one off the crossbar at 8:25 of the first.

The Irish continued to pressure and with 5:20 left in the first, Jake Pivonka’s stretch pass sprang Ryder Rolston on a partial breakaway attempt but his attempt went wide.

Wisconsin’s Brock Caufield then struck first, scoring his seventh of the season at 15:22 of the first.

Notre Dame had a power-play chance late in the first, with the best look coming from Nick Leivermann but his shot was pushed off the post by Wisconsin goaltender Jared Moe and cleared off the goal line by a defenseman.

Notre Dame trailed 1-0 after one.

With the extra attacker on during a delayed penalty, Jake Boltmann stepped into a one timer with 15:03 left in the second but it was stopped by Moe.

Galajda made a big shoulder stop on Daniel Laatsch at 11:11 of the second and smothered the follow-up attempt. Then Justin Janicke had a chance at the other end but couldn’t solve Moe.

Graham Slaggert broke through at 13:52 of the second, finishing off a one-timer from a Nick Leivermann cross-ice feed while the Irish were on the power play, with Ryder Rolston picking up the second assist. It was Slaggert’s 10th goal of the season.

But Wisconsin’s Dominick Mersch scored 38 seconds later to restore the Badgers’ lead to 2-1, which they would take to the locker room.

The Irish peppered Moe in the early going of the third but couldn’t tie it up before Zach Urdahl finished off a two-on-one chance with Sam Stange for a 3-1 Wisconsin lead at 5:57 of the third

Stastney set Landon Slaggert up in front with 8:39 left in the third, but the puck skipped over the sophomore’s stick when he tried to redirect it in the net.

Galajda was pulled with 3:42 left in the game, but the Irish were unable to extend the game, ultimately falling, 3-1.

Notes

  • With an assist tonight, Nick Leivermann extended his point streak to three games (Feb. 25-Mar. 4; 0-4-4).
  • With Graham Slaggert scoring a goal, it marked the third consecutive game with a tally from the Landon Slaggert/Graham Slaggert/Trevor Janicke line.
  • For Slaggert, it marked his 10th goal of the year, extending his career-high total.
  • Slaggert also became Notre Dame’s fifth 10-goal scorer this season.

Next Up

  • Game two of the best-of-three series will take place at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 5 at Compton Family Ice Arena on March 4-6 (tickets).

The state record was announced Thursday by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, which explained that the Atlantic Division swordfish record category had been vacant with a qualification requirement of at least 300 pounds.

Schultz, who used a dead eel attached to a circle hook and 50-pound-test braid line with a 150-pound-test leader, described the catch as a “fish of a lifetime” and a team effort.

“We put so much effort into this,” the Annapolis resident said. “Everyone had a crucial role.”

The swordfish was weighed on a certified scale at M.R. Ducks at Talbot Square Pier.

ACC baseball tournament: game 12 recap

The Tar Heels closed pool play at the ACC Tournament with a win over one of their in-state rivals, but that rival is the one moving on.

They were playing for no reason other than the rules and schedule said they had to, but it was an electric night at Truist Field in Charlotte for the North Carolina Tar Heels as they scored eight runs over the first two innings to set the pace for their 9-6 victory over NC State.

The Wolfpack had already clinched a spot in Saturday’s semi-finals after beating Pitt and clinching their pool Thursday night.  NC State will play Georgia Tech at 5 p.m. ET Saturday evening for a spot in the championship.

Third baseman Mac Horvath led the way for North Carolina as he turned in six RBI in the victory, four of which came on a first-inning grand slam.

ACC baseball tournament: Wolfpack outlast Panthers, head to semi-finals

NC State is moving on in Charlotte…

In the third and final game of Thursday’s ACC baseball tournament action, it was the third-seeded NC State Wolfpack getting by No. 10 Pitt to earn a spot in the conference semi-finals.

Pitt struck first as Ron Washington, Jr.’s RBI double in the bottom of the first gave the Panthers an early 1-0 lead, but that would be short-lived as NC State’s number-nine hitter J.T. Jarrett ripped a two-run double to give the Wolfpack the lead before he’d score on a throwing error to stretch the lead to 3-1.

That would be all the offense NC State would need as Pitt would muster just one run the rest of the way.

Reid Johnston was great on the mound for NC State as he pitched eight innings, allowing just two runs and striking out 10.

NC State now advances to the conference semi-finals on Saturday evening where they’ll face No. 2 Georgia Tech.

2021 ACC baseball tournament: day two preview

Let’s go Irish!

Wednesday’s action will be capped by No. 2 Georgia Tech getting their tournament underway as they’ll look to eliminate No. 11 Clemson after the Tigers dropped an all-time slugfest to No. 7 Louisville on Tuesday.

All three games on Wednesday can be seen on ACC Network Extra.

Alabama Takes Down Clemson to Advance to Super Regionals

The Clemson bats were silenced yet again, and ace Montana Fouts struck out 12 batters in Alabama’s 5-0 win.

To say that Alabama Crimson Tide softball was dominant over the weekend in the Tuscaloosa Regional would be the understatement of the season.

In the previous two games, the defense was stellar. Not allowing a single run while the starting pitcher struck out over 10 batters. That streak continued in Sunday’s regional-clinching win over Clemson. The Clemson bats were silenced yet again, and ace Montana Fouts struck out 12 batters in Alabama’s 5-0 win.

Alexis Mack scored twice in the game, but it was a three-run home run from Taylor Clark in the 2nd inning that gave Alabama’s offense the momentum. Mack was the top hitter in the game for the third game in a row, and extended her hitting streak to 12 games.

With the win, Alabama advances to the Super Regionals to face No. 14 seed Kentucky. Since 2005, when the Super Regional format was adopted, the Tide has appeared in every single super regional.

The best-of-three series with Kentucky begins Friday at noon CT and will be broadcasted on ESPN2.

Dominant Pitching Lifts Alabama Over Alabama State to Open Tuscaloosa Regional

A combined no-hitter and clutch hitting pushed the Tide over Alabama State, 9-0 in six innings, to open the Tuscaloosa Regional.

There was a return to normalcy on Friday with Alabama Softball. The Crimson Tide hosted a regional in front of a packed house at Rhoads Stadium and dominated in every aspect of the game en route to a victory.

A combined no-hitter and clutch hitting pushed the Tide over Alabama State, 9-0 in six innings, to open the Tuscaloosa Regional for their NCAA-leading 41st consecutive regional win dating back to 2007.

Lexi Kilfoyl and Krystal Goodman combined to record the no-hitter, with Kilfoyl having a record day in the circle. The sophomore struck out a career-high 15 batters in the win, which was two shy of the team record for postseason strikeouts.

Offensively, The Crimson Tide were led by Bailey Hemphill’s three RBI, two of which came off of a two-run home run in the 6th inning that put the eight-run run-rule into effect. Jenna Johnson also homered for Alabama. She hit her first home run of the season in the 2nd inning, which capped a nine pitch at-bat.

Alabama will face Clemson on Saturday at 11 A.M. CT. Clemson defeated Troy, 8-0, in their first-ever NCAA Tournament game since beginning their program in 2020. Valerie Cagle struck out 10 of 17 batters in the circle, and also hit two home runs in the win.
