Alvin Kamara has more fumbles than touchdowns scored in 2022

Alvin Kamara has more fumbles than touchdowns in 2022, but it says more about the Saints offense than his issues with ball security:

It’s been a rough year for Alvin Kamara. The New Orleans Saints running back was sidelined by a rib injury early in the 2022 season, and he just tied his career-high with 4 fumbles in a single season after turning the ball over twice against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. And he’s only scored 3 touchdowns all season, which is almost baffling.

Especially when you consider that Kamara entered the season needing 5 scores to claim Marquese Colston’s record for the most touchdowns scored in franchise history. It’s unlike him. Kamara only has one other season with multiple fumbles, and he’s averaged 13.6 touchdowns per year as a runner, receiver, and kick returner going into the 2022 campaign.

So while it’s easy to focus on the turnovers, the larger issue here is the Saints not getting more out of Kamara, specifically in the red zone. This season he’s totaled 13 carries and 8 targets inside the opponent’s 20-yard line — an average of 2.1 scoring opportunities per game. Going into this season, Kamara had 180 carries and 75 targets in the red zone for an average of 3.5 tries per game. That’s a small difference, but it adds up.

What gives? Part of the problem lies at quarterback. Both Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston have had trouble finding Kamara in the flats at times, though Kamara is averaging more targets per game with Dalton (6.8) than Winston (3.4, including their games together in 2021). Dalton also just missed a walk-in touchdown to Kamara against the 49ers. The point is that both passers haven’t gotten the most out of one of the NFL’s proven playmakers.

But it also comes down to playcalling. Pete Carmichael Jr. has been on the headset all season and he hasn’t done a good enough job getting Kamara involved — specifically in the red zone. And the plays Kamara is getting show a worrying lack of creativity. Just 25.9% of his carries are going outside the tackles, compared to 31.1% of his rushing attempts from 2019 to 2021. Carmichael is asking him to run between the tackles and into the teeth of the defense over and over again, and it isn’t working.

Hopefully things turn around over these final five games. If this is all the production the Saints are going to get out of Kamara, it doesn’t justify his contract value. They owe it to themselves to get the most out of that investment, and the best path forward is to go back and key in on what Kamara has done well throughout his career. He may not be as effective without Drew Brees, but he’s made enough plays with enough different quarterbacks over the years to where this scoring drought is inexcusable.

As for the fumbles: again, this is uncharacteristic for Kamara. It should stabilize over time. It’s not like he’s gotten lazy with his ball security or is mishandling his opportunities. These things happen, and taking the ball out of his hands isn’t the answer. No one knows how important protecting the football is better than Kamara, and he’s shown before that he’ll get it cleaned up. He and the Saints can’t afford not to.

David Njoku says the offense is ready to do ‘whatever it takes’ to score touchdowns

Njoku was one of the #Browns’ brightest stars against the #Steelers and is ready to continue helping the team win as the season wears on.

After Thursday’s win, the Cleveland Browns are officially the top team in the AFC North and control their own destiny in their quest to make the playoffs. They left no doubt about their superiority against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and now with a long week of preparation to get ready for the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4, the team is in an enviable position heading into the meat of their schedule.

Speaking to reporters after the game, tight end David Njoku was optimistic about the Browns’ outlook. He was one of Cleveland’s most impactful stars, grabbing nine catches for 89 yards and a touchdown against the divisional rival Steelers, and told the media that he is ready for more in the coming weeks.

I love everything that requires being a tight end,” Njoku said of his role, “Whatever the team asks from me, I will do it 100 percent. I am just glad we got the win.”

Part of his role is serving as a run blocker for Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in the ground game, and Njoku is acutely aware that the Browns have centered their identity around the run. Asked how the team feels about prioritizing the gritty yards on rushing plays, Njoku was adamant that Cleveland is happy with any play call that advances field position, and that he is happy to play any part necessary to help the Browns win games.

“Any positive plays we produce on offense we love,” He explained. “Running, passing or whatever it takes to get those touchdowns and get those hard-earned yards is what we like to do and what we will do.”

The strength of Cleveland’s schedule isn’t going to let up over the course of their next 14 games, so leaning on their core identity will be key to maintaining the success they’ve found through three weeks. If they can continue to build on what has worked, the Browns have a very good chance to end the season as AFC North champions with a full head of steam in January’s elimination games.

Highlights from Seahawks final preseason game against Cowboys

Catch all the highlights from the Seattle Seahawks’ 27-26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys to close out their 2022 preseason campaign.

The Seattle Seahawks wrapped up their preseason with a 27-26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Friday night.

As promised, Geno Smith got the start at quarterback for the Seahawks but was promptly replaced by Drew Lock. Coach Pete Carroll announced after the game that Smith had won the starting job for Week 1 of the regular season.

The Seahawks managed to hold the lead for most of the night on Friday, but costly penalties late in the matchup proved deadly.

Seattle has some difficult choices to make before trimming the roster to the mandated 53 players by the deadline on Tuesday – but at least the quarterback competition has been decided.

Below are the highlights – and some lowlights – from the Seahawks’ loss to the Cowboys.

Highlights from Bears win over Seahawks Thursday night

Here’s a look at some of the highlights from the Chicago Bears 27-11 win over the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on Thursday night.

The Seattle Seahawks lost their only home game of the preseason to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.

The Seahawks’ play was sloppy at best in front of a national audience and Drew Lock – who was inactive due to COVID-19 – missed a major opportunity to spring ahead in Seattle’s quarterback competition.

After Geno Smith got the start, third-string QB Jacob Eason came in in the second half and was able to put some points on the board. It was too little too late, however, and Chicago flies home with the 27-11 win.

Below are some of the highlights from Thursday night.

Seahawks TE Noah Fant hoping to ‘take the leap’ this season

Seattle Seahawks tight end Noah Fant is hoping to “take the leap” as far as his production this season, his first in the Emerald City.

Tight end Noah Fant admitted that he was a little surprised when the Broncos sent him to Seattle as part of the trade for Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson but he understands the reasoning behind the move. He also appreciates the chance to make a fresh start and a name for himself here in the Emerald City.

“To be honest with you, I haven’t been really happy from my perspective with my production the last two years,” Fant told reporters on Tuesday. “Granted, it’s been decent production compared to other tight ends in the NFL. But I definitely am striving for more and better.”

In 16 games played for the Broncos last season, Fant tallied 68 receptions for 670 yards and four touchdowns. He plans to improve on those numbers significantly in 2022.

“Goals for year four is to take that leap, right?” Fant said. “I mean, I’m kind of stuck at that high 600 ceiling and I got to break through that. I think I have every opportunity to do that in Seattle, and I’m excited to get to work to do that.”

Seahawks WR Dee Eskrigde could become ‘really impactful player’

Coach Pete Carroll believes Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Dee Eskrigde could become a “really impactful player” following his rookie season.

The Seattle Seahawks wrapped up their losing year with a win Sunday afternoon against the Cardinals in Arizona. After returning home, coach Pete Carroll addressed the media for the final time this season. One of the questions he was asked was about the progression of rookie wide receiver, Dee Eskridge.

“Without hesitation, he’s going to be a really impactful player, I don’t have any hesitation in saying that,” Carroll told reporters. “He has so much going for him, he’s such a talented kid, a good worker, and all of that, when we come back around, it’s going to look so much different to him.”

Eskridge got a late start to his rookie campaign after sustaining a concussion in the season opener and sitting out the first half of the year. He finished 2021 with 10 receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown.

“The jump that guys make from year one to year two is the most significant jump for the most part,” Carroll explained. “Dee Eskridge is going to make a huge jump and be a very impactful player. We will get him involved in the kicking game more so, we worked with him all year on that, but we weren’t quite ready to feature his opportunity there.

“He can run it, he can catch it, he can block, and he has a great work ethic, so there is nothing holding him back.”
