Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix has a Total QBR rating of 44.0 through six weeks. He ranks 28th in the NFL.

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix posted a Total QBR rating of 56.2 in a 23-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last week, bringing his season-long Total QBR average to 44.0.

That’s a slight improvement from last week’s rating (43.1), but Nix has fallen from being ranked No. 25 in the NFL down to No. 28 due to other QBs improving their ratings in Week 6.

Nix’s traditional passer rating this season is 73.7, which ranks 30th.

Unlike a traditional passer rating, the Total QBR “incorporates all of a quarterback’s contributions to winning, including how he impacts the game on passes, rushes, turnovers and penalties,” according to ESPN.

The metric takes into account scenarios that a traditional passer rating overlooks and considers “a team’s level of success or failure on every play to provide the proper context and then allocates credit to the quarterback and his teammate to produce a clearer measure of quarterback efficiency.”

With that context in mind, here’s a look at how Nix stacks up against the NFL’s other starting quarterbacks this fall.

Now Wilson is healthy ahead of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders but the team hasn’t decided who will get the start.

Fields is currently No. 22 in the NFL in Total QBR, ahead of quarterbacks like Jared Goff and Justin Herbert.

Unlike a traditional passer rating, the Total QBR “incorporates all of a quarterback’s contributions to winning, including how he impacts the game on passes, rushes, turnovers and penalties,” according to ESPN.

The metric takes into account scenarios that a traditional passer rating overlooks and considers “a team’s level of success or failure on every play to provide the proper context and then allocates credit to the quarterback and his teammate to produce a clearer measure of quarterback efficiency.”

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix had perhaps the best game of his career against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, completing 70.4% of his passes for 206 yards with two touchdown passes and no interceptions. He also rushed for a touchdown in a 34-18 win.

Despite that positive performance, Nix dropped from No. 20 down to No. 25 in ESPN’s Total QBR rankings this week. Strangely, ESPN gave Nix a 26.9 Total QBR rating against the Raiders, his worst of the season. That dropped Nix’s season-long rating down to 43.1.

Nix’s traditional passer rating against Las Vegas was 117.2, which represented his best passer rating thus far.

Nix has a Total QBR rating of 54.4 this year, which ranks 15th in the NFL, about middle of the pack.

ESPN’s Total Quarterback Rating (Total QBR), which was released in 2011, has never claimed to be perfect, but unlike other measures of quarterback performance, it incorporates all of a quarterback’s contributions to winning, including how he impacts the game on passes, rushes, turnovers and penalties. Also, since QBR is built from the play level, it accounts for a team’s level of success or failure on every play to provide the proper context and then allocates credit to the quarterback and his teammate to produce a clearer measure of quarterback efficiency.

Broncos QB Russell Wilson ranked 21st with a 50.7 Total QBR rating in 2023. Jarrett Stidham ranked 31st with a 30.6 QBR rating. 

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson started 15 games in 2023, posting a 98.0 passer rating in those contests (eighth-best in the NFL).

Jarrett Stidham started the final two games of the season and he had an 87.7 passer rating, which ranked 28th in the league this season.

Their “Total QBR” ratings on ESPN are much lower.

Wilson ranked 21st among qualifying quarterbacks (QBs with 20 action plays per team game) with a 50.7 QBR rating in 2023. Stidham ranks 31st with a 30.6 QBR rating.

ESPN’s Total QBR “values the quarterback on all play types on a 0-100 scale,” taking into account factors such as the defense faced, the QB’s actual contribution to a play and efficiency.

Stidham’s rating (31.3) is considerably lower than Wilson’s and it ranks 30th among current starters, but he only has a one-game sample size. In fact, multiple current starters listed below have a very small sample size, which skews the ratings.

With that caveat in mind, here’s a quick look at all 32 (projected) starting quarterbacks going into the final week of the 2023 NFL season.

NFL quarterbacks by Total QBR: Where Patriots’ Bailey Zappe ranked in Week 17

Ranking every NFL quarterback by Total QBR in Week 17

New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe took a significant step back in the Total QBR department in Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The second-year signal caller ranked 26th out of the other Week 17 quarterbacks after a run-in with a ferocious Bills defense on the road. He threw for 209 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

All of the turnovers came in the first half, and Zappe was able to make plays down the stretch to keep the Patriots in the game. So his performance wasn’t nearly as bad as it looks on paper.

If anything, Zappe showed a willingness to step up in the pocket and make plays, even when nothing seemed to be going right around him initially. The Patriots also fielded a banged-up offensive line that struggled to hold up against the Bills’ pass rush.

Bailey Zappe made a leap in the Total QBR rankings after the Patriots’ Week 16 win over the Broncos.

New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe bounced back in a big way in Sunday’s Christmas Eve road win over the Denver Broncos.

Last week, he fell all the way to 27th in the Total QBR ratings, but a stellar effort at Mile High had him soaring all the way up to the No. 12 spot in Week 16. And to think, the game started with him being the victim of a strip sack fumble on the very first play.

The only difference this time around is the fact that Zappe and the offense played better as the game went on. They even put together a game-winning drive in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter, which ended on a 56-yard field goal from kicker Chad Ryland.

However, it was Zappe and the offense that got Ryland within striking distance to even make the miracle kick a possibility. The second-year quarterback went 25-of-33 passing for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

Fans might be surprised to see that despite those positive stats, Wilson ranks 16th among current starters with a 50.0 “Total QBR” rating in 2023.
