LSU football: Who’s staying, who’s leaving ahead of the 2021 season?

Here’s a look at who we know will be back, and who is leaving LSU ahead of the 2021 season.

Players across college football were granted an extra year of eligibility due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, and LSU is looking to return some of its top players after finishing with a dismal 5-5 overall record.

Head coach Ed Orgeron expressed confidence in his ability to retain players after the 2020 season.

“I think you’re gonna be surprised by the retention level that we have,” he said. “I’ve talked to a lot of guys, now a lot of things can happen, but right now a lot of them are leaning on coming back. I’m recruiting the heck out of the offensive line which would really help us.”

Based on player announcements over the past two weeks, here’s what we know about who will return and who will not for the Tigers ahead of the 2021 college football season:

Returning: LG Ed Ingram

The LSU offensive line received good news when Ingram announced Saturday he would return for the upcoming season.

“Another year? ehhh what the heck, let’s ride #GeauxTigers,” he wrote on Twitter.

Ingram, a 6-foot-3, 315-pounder from DeSoto, Texas played in nine games in 2020, only missing the contest at Missouri.

LSU FB/TE Tory Carter declares for 2021 NFL Draft

LSU fullback Tory Carter is looking forward to the next chapter of his football career in 2021.

LSU fullback and tight end Tory Carter will not be rejoining the Tigers with his extra year of eligibility next season.

Carter took to Twitter on Wednesday evening, announcing he was entering the 2021 NFL Draft.

The 6-foot, 244-pounder started at fullback for LSU in 2018, later used more as an H-back and a tight end.

Over four seasons, Carter totaled two carries for four yards, with 16 catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns. He made perhaps his biggest impact on special teams and recorded eight tackles on his college career.

Carter saw action seven on LSU’s 10 games in 2020, starting one of those, and tallying four catches for 42 yards.

With his departure, LSU could retain tight ends Arik Gilbert, Nick Storz and Kole Taylor into next season.

LSU makes changes to depth chart ahead of season finale vs. Ole Miss

LSU made changes to the depth chart ahead of kickoff vs. Ole Miss.

It’s been an interesting season for every college football team across the country, including LSU, in the midst of unprecedented circumstances.

On Saturday, the Tigers play their final game of the season against the Ole Miss Rebels, aiming to finish out with an overall record of 5-5 after suffering several opt-outs and the loss of starting quarterback Myles Brennan to a significant lower-body injury after the loss to Missouri.

The depth chart looks a little different for this one, as the Tigers made some changes ahead of kickoff.

Chasen Hines will be replaced by Cameron Wire at offensive guard, while Kole Taylor will start in Tory Carter’s place at tight end and John Emery Jr. is expected to start with Tyrion Davis-Price out at running back.

The Tigers and Rebels are set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT in Tiger Stadium.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron says Tory Carter, Mo Hampton back for Alabama

LSU will have Tory Carter and Mo Hampton back against Alabama.

As the LSU Tigers prepare to host No. 1 Alabama on Saturday evening in Baton Rouge, head coach Ed Orgeron announced that his team was getting two key players back for the matchup on Wednesday.

Senior fullback/tight end Tory Carter, who did not dress in the loss at Texas A&M, has been reinstated and will play against the Crimson Tide.

Without Carter, LSU could get nothing going in the running game. LSU tried, unsuccessfully, to use star freshman Arik Gilbert as a lead blocker at times against the Aggies.

If LSU is to pull off the major upset, the Tigers must have a strong running game.

Defensively, sophomore safety Mo Hampton returns to action after missing the two previous games. Hampton started LSU’s first four games before coming off the bench in the loss to Auburn.

Despite struggling through the first five games of the season, LSU’s defense has been much better in the last two weeks.

The Tigers will need all possible reinforcements when they face an Alabama offense averaging 47 points per game.

Alabama Week: Everything LSU coach Ed Orgeron said in his Monday press conference

LSU coach Ed Orgeron fielded a host of questions on Monday surrounding the upcoming matchup against Alabama.

The LSU Tigers aim to get back to the win column as they face a top-ranked Alabama team after falling 20-7 to Texas A&M on Saturday.

But that won’t be an easy task, considering that Alabama hasn’t dropped a game and is quite rightfully favored by four touchdowns over LSU.

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron fielded a host of questions on the upcoming matchup, what went wrong against the Aggies and the general state of the team when he met with the media on Monday.

One of the biggest topics of the week was wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., who opted out of the remainder of the season and declared for the 2021 NFL Draft the day after the loss to Texas A&M.

Orgeron said he had heard nothing of Marshall planning to opt out until Sunday morning but that he handled the business decision “like a man.”

Orgeron also said the Tigers would be without fullback Tory Carter when they face the Crimson Tide this weekend.

Orgeron also said wide receiver Racey McMath would likely be missing.

The original date for the Alabama game was postponed after COVID-19 concerns surrounding the LSU football program, and Orgeron had a candid response when he was asked if the Tigers were a better football team since Nov. 14, when the game was supposed to be played.

Orgeron had praise for his offensive line, a unit that struggled toward the beginning of the season, and spoke to the defense’s improvements as well.

We saw both quarterbacks — TJ Finley and Max Johnson — make an appearance on Saturday. The only reason Johnson entered the game was to try some quarterback runs with Johnson, which didn’t work.

LSU and Alabama are set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday in Tiger Stadium.

Look: LSU FB Tory Carter shows off natty tattoo

Carter finished out the 2019 season with a pair of receptions for 15 yards, and will look to build off that in 2020.

It seems like ages ago since LSU football entered the 2019 season doubted, only to finish out with an undefeated record and cap the season off with a national championship victory over Clemson back in January.

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the sports world has had a lot to think about since that historical win, but no one has forgotten about the absolute dominance the Bayou Bengals displayed when college football was last played.

In fact, so much so that LSU fullback Tory Carter has inked the memory to his body.

Carter replied to a user’s post earlier this week of the work done by Samson Bennett of Adel, Georgia. It’s not clear when exactly Carter got the tattoo, but it’s definitely a pretty elaborate one.
