Giants place kicker Greg Joseph on IR, elevated kicker Jude McAtamney

The New York Giants have placed kicker Greg Joseph on IR, elevated kicker Jude McAtamney, and made several other roster moves.

The New York Giants have placed kicker Greg Joseph on injured reserve (IR) with an abdomen issue after he popped up on Friday’s injury report.

Joseph is the second Giants kicker to land on IR this season, joining Graham Gano, who ironically suffered a hamstring injury during a Week 2 game against the Washington Commanders — Big Blue’s Sunday opponent.

In Gano’s absence, Joseph made 13 of his 16 field goal attempts and all six of his point-after attempts.

With the need for a replacement, the Giants elevated Irish-born kicker Jude McAtamney from their practice squad. He came to the team via the International Player Pathway Program and is on a roster exemption.

For McAtamney, this is his first standard elevation.

Additionally, having run out of elevations, the Giants signed linebacker Tomon Fox, who primarily plays special teams, to their 53-man roster. His spot on the practice squad was filled by fullback Jakob Johnson, who was once again re-signed.

Giants elevate Tomon Fox from practice squad

The New York Giants have elevated linebacker Tomon Fox from their practice squad for a Week 7 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The New York Giants have elevated linebacker Tomon Fox from their practice squad ahead of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium.

For Fox, this is his second standard elevation. He was previously activated ahead of a Week 2 game against the Washington Commanders. He has one remaining.

During that game against the Commanders, Fox took 19 special teams snaps but did not take a single defensive snap.

Fox originally signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent out of North Carolina in 2022. He has appeared in 18 career games (one start), recording 25 tackles (16 solo, three for a loss), one QB hit and one sack.

Most of Fox’s production came as a rookie in 2022. Since then, he’s appeared in just two games — one in 2023 and the aforementioned game against Washington.

With Kayvon Thibodeaux (wrist) on injured reserve (IR) and Brian Burns dealing with a groin injury, it makes sense to elevate Fox. However, if Burns suits up on Sunday afternoon, he will likely be limited to a special teams role.

Giants place Gunner Olszewski on IR, elevate 2 from practice squad

The New York Giants have placed Gunner Olszewski on injured reserve (IR) and elevated two from the practice squad.

The New York Giants have placed wide receiver and kick returner, Gunner Olszewski, on injured reserve (IR) and elevated linebackers Ty Summers and Tomon Fox from their practice squad.

With Olszewski now on IR, the Giants will be short of their full 53-man roster (plus two practice squad elevations) for the second consecutive week.

Earlier on Saturday, the Giants also added kicker Graham Gano to their injury list with a groin ailment.

They could have chosen to sign kicker Jude McAtamney to their active roster or to elevate him but opted against it. Instead, they went with the elevations of Summers and Fox.

The reason for that is rookie Darius Muasau is out this week and Micah McFadden hasn’t played in a game due to a groin injury he suffered in the Giants’ first preseason game in Houston.

McFadden practiced in full on Friday and is expected to play this week.

For Summers, this is his second standard elevation. He has one remaining. This is the first elevation for Fox, who now has two remaining.

Giants place Evan Neal on season-ending IR, activate Matt Peart

The New York Giants have placed RT Evan Neal on injured reserve, activated OL Matt Peart from IR and elevated two from the practice squad.

The disappointing second season for New York Giants right tackle Evan Neal has officially come to an end.

The Giants announced on Sunday that Neal has been placed on injured reserve (IR) as the result of a sprained ankle that has kept him out in recent weeks.

Neal ends the season having appeared in just seven games (all starts) while compiling a Pro Football Focus grade of 39.8, which is dead last among all qualifying tackles.

Replacing Neal on the 53-man roster is offensive lineman Matt Peart, who was officially activated from IR just days after he was designated to return.

A third-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Peart will now fill the role of backup to Tyre Phillips, who has taken over as the team’s starter in place of Neal.

The Giants have also elevated kicker Mason Crosby and linebacker Tomon Fox from the practice squad. It is the first elevation for both players.

Crosby was signed earlier this week to replace Cade York, who landed on IR with a quad injury. He was slated to fill in for Randy Bullock, who had replaced Graham Gano, each of whom are also on IR.

New York Giants cut former Tar Heel Tomon Fox

The New Giants cut former Tar Heel Tomon Fox ahead of the final 53-men roster.

The New York Giants are parting ways with former North Carolina Tar Heel [autotag]Tomon Fox[/autotag], per Giants beat reporter Dan Duggan.

The football season is eight days away, so NFL GMs and Coaches are cutting their rosters to a final 53-man roster. Last season, Fox joined the NY Giants as an undrafted free agent, making waves around social media after making a highlight tackle to force a fumble in the preseason.

If another team does not pick up Fox, he will likely return to New York with the practice squad.

Fox appeared in 16 of 17 games last year, starting in the final game for the New York Giants. In those games, Fox finished with 24 tackles, three for loss, and one sack.

Giants trim roster to 53: The 5 biggest surprise cuts

The New York Giants set their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday and these were the five biggest names waived, cut or released.

The New York Giants cut their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday.

Unlike in recent years, the exercise was a difficult one as the Giants had more depth in training camp this season

Here are the five biggest surprise cuts the Giants made on Tuesday.

Giants release second unofficial preseason depth chart: 5 takeaways

The New York Giants have released their unofficial depth chart ahead of the Carolina Panthers preseason game and here are five takeaways.

The New York Giants have released their second unofficial depth chart, this time in advance of their Week 2 preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

The depth chart was released prior to several of the team’s Tuesday transactions and includes no changes from a week ago. Everything remains exactly the same.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t a few notable takeaways, however. Here are five.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 21-16 preseason loss to Lions

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1 of the preseason?

The New York Giants opened the 2023 preseason on Friday night at Ford Field and fell to the Detroit Lions by a score of 21-16.

The game was a tale of two halves as the defense played above board over the first two quarters before deep reserves faltered late. There was more consistency on offense but that wasn’t necessarily a good thing as the O-Line struggled from the kickoff to the final whistle. The lacking depth there is a genuine concern.

But not all was bad. In fact, there was quite a bit of good, especially as it relates to the team’s 2023 NFL draft class.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the preseason-opening loss? Let’s take a look.

Giants fall to Lions: Winners, losers and those in between

The New York Giants fell to the Lions, 21-16, on Friday and here’s a look at our winners and losers (and those in between) from the game.

Editor’s note: Upon reviewing the game, we changed the entry for Deonte Banks, adding detail on what was a bang-bang play and difficult to read in real-time. Giants Wire writers disagreed (and still disagree) on what transpired.

The New York Giants opened the 2023 preseason on Friday night against the Detroit Lions and neither team played their key starters. There were a few spot starters on both sides but predominantly, the game featured depth players.

Accordingly, it was a rather ugly performance for each team. There was more bad than good, and neither coach is going to be particularly happy on Saturday morning.

Here are some winners, losers, and in-betweens from Fright night’s Giants’ victory/defeat.

Giants’ Brian Daboll: Micah McFadden making most of opportunities

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll is impressed with rookies Micah McFadden and Tomon Fox, who are making the most of their chances.

New York Giants rookie inside linebacker Micah McFadden has been getting more playing time of late. In Sunday’s game, McFadden played on 42 percent of the defensive snaps.

Head coach Brian Daboll was asked on Monday the reason the team is gaining confidence in the fifth round selection out of Indiana.

“Continual improvement,” said Daboll. “He’s done the right thing, on and off the field. We use a lot of packages on defense and shuffle a lot of guys in and out, and that was something that we were going to do this week and give him some chances. He made the most of them.”

McFadden made four tackles in the Giants’ 27-13 loss to the Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday, including his first NFL sack. Another rookie linebacker that saw 42 percent of the snaps on Sunday was Tomon Fox, the undrafted free agent out of North Carolina that impressed one of their most famous alums, Lawrence Taylor, this summer.

Fox led the Giants with eight total stops in the game, two for a loss. Daboll is a proponent of rewarding players who make the most out of their opportunities.

“I think we’ll play the guys that we think earned it and then for that particular week gives us a chance that we think is best for our team,” Daboll said. “That’s what we’ve always done, and that’s what we’ll always do.”

That bodes well for McFadden and Fox, two players who will be hard to keep off the field going forward.
