Michigan to hire former Jags executive Tom Gamble

Gamble was the Jags’ senior personnel executive during the 2021 season, and he was widely seen as the right-hand man for general manager Trent Baalke.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be making changes to their front office after how 2021 went, and one member who won’t be a part of the group is senior personnel executive Tom Gamble. According to reports, he will be working on the collegiate level with Jim Harbaugh in 2022 after taking the open director of player personnel role at Michigan.

Gamble and Harbaugh have a history of working together in the past, as the former was an executive in San Francisco’s front office from 2005-12, while the latter was their head coach (2011-14). Gamble reunited with Harbaugh in 2017, too, as the former held a personnel role for the Wolverines until 2019.

Gamble also has a lengthy relationship with general manager Trent Baalke, who he also worked with during two separate stints with the 49ers. Gamble has been considered Baalke’s right-hand man in the front office, and his departure could be a sign of many changes among the administration.

The team has reportedly interviewed Rick Spielman for a high-level position that is believed to be executive vice president. If the team intends to bring someone in above Baalke in an EVP role, it could help explain why Gamble is no longer with the team.

Despite fan protest and reports that it hamstrung the coaching search, owner Shad Khan decided to retain Baalke this offseason, and while it’s always possible a move is made after the draft, it seems like Baalke will be sticking around for the 2022 season. But with that being said, Gamble’s departure could be seen as a canary in the coal mine that structural changes to the front office are coming, which Khan also hinted at in the introductory press conference for head coach Doug Pederson.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ personnel staff has been finalized. The team made their staff for the 2021 season official Thursday, which included the hiring of Regis Eller as Director of Pro Scouting, Tom McConnaughey and John Stevenson as national scouts, and Dave McCloughan as a college scout.

With those four joining the organization, the Jags’ personnel group is as follows:

Eller was last with the Los Angeles Chargers as an assistant director of pro scouting, a role he held for six years.

McConnaughey was in Los Angeles with Eller holding a national scout role. Inside the League’s Neil Stratton reported this news six days ago as McConnaughey had been with the Chargers for 24 years.

Stevenson, a former player for the Giants, joins the Jags after time with the San Francisco 49ers. He worked under Jags current general manager Trent Baalke while with the 49ers and the two have decided to reunite. He was a regional scout with San Francisco before leaving and also was a scouting assistant prior. Stratton also reported his departure back in May.

McCloughan is a name many will recognize because he’s from a family who has been heavily involved with the NFL scouting community. He’s the brother of former 49ers and Washington Football Team general manager Scot McCloughan. The last team he was with was the Raiders back in 2019.

Jaguars officially name Tom Gamble, Ryan Stamper to personnel department

The Jags personnel department has two new members in Tom Gamble and Ryan Stamper.

The Jacksonville Jaguars officially named their coaching staff last week and started this week by officially naming Tom Gamble and Ryan Stamper to their front office. Both had been associated with the Jags’ front office as it was revealed that they would be joining the organization, but they officially have job titles now.

General manager Trent Baalke revealed last month that Tom Gamble had been working in the front office already. Gamble’s decision to join the Jags comes after he was Baalke’s right-hand man during a majority of his time as the San Francisco 49ers’ front office leader from 2011-16.

Gamble’s last stop was in the Canadian football League where he was named the assistant general manager for the Montreal Alouettes in 2020. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic prevented the CFL from having a season and now Gamble is with the Jags.

“Tom and Ryan are key additions to the personnel department,” Baalke said of both new additions. “Tom brings 30 years of NFL experience in player personnel, and, given our extensive history together, his counsel, expertise, and wealth of relationships in the business will help us in every aspect of player acquisition and retention.”

As for Stamper, who is from Jacksonville, he was a former linebacker for Urban Meyer while at the University of Florida. After his college career as a player, he spent eight years working with the Buckeyes under Meyer. His last title with them was as an assistant athletic director of player development.

“As a native of Jacksonville, Ryan knows this area, and his track record of working with young men and preparing them for life on and off the field is impressive and well documented,” Baalke added. “He will play an important role in helping us bridge the gap between player acquisition, player development and player retention. The energy and expertise that both Tom and Ryan bring to the organization will serve us well as we strive to build a winner, both on and off the field, in Jacksonville.”

As a player, Stamper was a two-time captain for Meyer and was on the Gators’ team from 2006-09. Stamper finished his career with 148 total tackles (13.5 for loss), 4.5 sacks, and two picks during his time in Gainesville.
