Buccaneers, Chargers odds-on favorites to sign Tom Brady

Looking at which NFL team has the best odds to sign QB Tom Brady in free agency, and where he’ll be playing in 2020.

Future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady announced Tuesday morning he won’t be returning to the New England Patriots after 20 seasons. This means the 42-year-old, six-time Super Bowl winner will be testing the NFL free-agent waters for the first time before he suits up in 2020. Which NFL team has the best shot at signing Tom Brady? We look at the sports betting odds below.

Odds to sign Tom Brady: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-278)

The Buccaneers are expected to move on from incumbent QB Jameis Winston and are now the clear favorites to sign Brady with it known he’ll be hitting the open market.

Head coach Bruce Arians is well-versed in working with veteran quarterbacks Kurt Warner and Carson Palmer from his days with the Arizona Cardinals, and the team has two top wide receivers in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

The Bucs finished third in the NFC South last season with a record of 7-9, but landing Brady and moving on from Winston, would drastically improve their 2020 outlook.

Odds to sign Tom Brady: Los Angeles Chargers (+200)

The Chargers finished last in the AFC West in 2019 at 5-11. Veteran QB Philip Rivers has moved on (as of this writing he was expected to sign with the Indianapolis Colts), and Brady could help the Chargers return to the postseason following their 12-4 2018 campaign.

Like the Patriots, the Chargers will lean on a multi-headed backfield expected to be led by Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson. WR Keenan Allen is one of the more talented slot receivers in the game, Mike Williams has size and can stretch the field, while franchise-tagged TE Hunter Henry is the big target Brady missed last season following the retirement of Rob Gronkowski.

Poll: Should Chargers sign QB Tom Brady?

Should the Los Angeles Chargers acquire the six-time Super Bowl champ?

Who will quarterback Tom Brady suit up for in 2020?

Among the 32 NFL teams, the Chargers sit atop of the list of ideal suitors for the six-time Super Bowl champion.

Los Angeles has been linked to Brady because the team is moving into a new stadium and his presence would help bring in fans as he would return to his home state, along with supplying the offense with arguably the league’s best quarterback.

However, there are some cons to signing Brady, with the cost to acquire him being near the top.

Brady is going to command at least $30 million a year. That would take up approximately 60 percent of the Chargers’ available cap space. On top of that, the Patriots would take on a $13 million dead-money charge if Brady walked in free agency, compared to $6.5 million if they re-signed him.

There’s no doubt that Bolts will inquire about Brady, given their need for a quarterback but it’s uncertain whether or not they will be able to strike a deal. Only time will tell when free agency begins on March 18.

With that, we want to know if you’d be in favor of the Chargers signing Brady.

Where will Tom Brady play in 2020? NFL futures odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing the NFL futures odds for QB Tom Brady’s team for the 2020 season, with picks, tips and best bets.

The entire sports world is eagerly awaiting the most important free agency decision since LeBron James took his talents to South Beach, as future Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady is set to become a free agent for the first time in his illustrious career. BetMGM has betting odds up for Brady’s next team, and we break down those odds with picks for where Brady will be playing in the 2020 NFL season.

Tom Brady’s next team: Patriots (-125) vs. Field (+105)

While the closest thing to an official announcement from Brady on whether or not he’ll play in 2020 was a Super Bowl LIV commercial for Hulu, he’s widely expected to be suiting up (somewhere) for a 21st season in the NFL. The question remains whether it will be with the New England Patriots, the only team for which he has played since being drafted 199th overall in 2000, or with someone else.

BetMGM has the Pats (-125) favored over the field (+105), which groups the other 31 NFL teams together. Should Brady sign anywhere but New England after free agency opens at 4 p.m. ET March 18, a $10 bet on the field would return a profit of $10.50. The same wager on Brady re-upping with the Pats would fetch a profit of $8.

Brady played many of the last 20 seasons while giving the Pats a significant “hometown discount”. This helped the three-time MVP guide the Pats to six Super Bowl titles. Now, with suitors lined up and reportedly willing to offer as much as $60 million on a two year deal for the 42-year-old, Brady may switch allegiances and cash in on all of his career success.

Having embodied the “Patriot Way” throughout his career it’s odd for Brady to have remained so coy if he were to simply remain in New England for 2020. The bet to make is on the FIELD (+105).

Tom Brady’s next team

The Tennessee Titans (+400) are the top favorites to sign Brady after beating the Pats in the AFC Wild Card Round of the 2019 postseason. Brady’s last play in that game, and potentially his last with the Pats, was a pick-six. Titans QB and 2019 Comeback Player of the Year Ryan Tannehill is also set to hit free agency. Former linebacker and teammate Mike Vrabel is the head coach of the Titans.

The Las Vegas Raiders (+500) are the second favorite to sign Brady, as they look to make another splash amid their relocation to Sin City. The Los Angeles Chargers (+800) round out the top three.

The value starts to rise with the Indianapolis Colts (+1000) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+1500). The Colts are projected to enter the 2020 league year with over $86 million in cap space, giving them more than enough room to not only sign Brady but to also trade for Patriots WR Julian Edelman to help lure Brady to his longtime rival.

Bucs head coach Bruce Arians has long had an affinity for veteran QBs (Kurt Warner, Carson Palmer) and Tampa Bay seems more than ready to move on from Jameis Winston. The Bucs have more cap space than all but the Colts and Miami Dolphins, and are worth a bet for a 15-1 return on your investment.

New England Patriots should target former Georgia football WR this offseason

Why the New England Patriots should target former Georgia football WR AJ Green this offseason.

The New England Patriots are in big need of an elite wide receiver, and a former Bulldog could be the answer to their problems.

The Patriots at one point had Julian Edelman, Antonio Brown and Josh Gordon on the roster. However, Gordon and Brown did not work out, leaving Edelman as the only elite receiver on the depth chart. Edelman was his usual reliable self until injuries slowed him down and forced him to undergo shoulder surgery at the end of the season.

With that in mind, former Georgia wide receiver AJ Green would be a great fit in New England’s offense if he is not franchise tagged by the Cincinnati Bengals. On the topic of being franchise tagged, that is not what Green wants. He will take the money and play if tagged, but he thinks it sends the wrong message.

“The franchise tag is not the best thing,” Green told Elise Jesse of WLWT in Cincinnati. “But like I said, I’m not turning down $18 million.”

Green wants to remain with the Bengals, but a one year tag does not excite him like a multi-year contract would.

Green has spent his entire career with the Bengals, and the 31 year old has earned a spot in the Pro Bowl seven times. There is risk involved with Green, though – he’s played in just 35 of a possible 64 games since 2015.

But when he’s healthy, there’s no denying he is one of the league’s top talents at the receiver position.

Green and the Patriots would be a match made in heaven. Bill Belichick runs a tight shift, likes his players to remain out of the spotlight and enjoys keeping a low profile. That describes Green – one of the most humble players in the league, someone who is rather inactive on social media and a guy who performs at a high level without added drama.

After what the Patriots went through with Gordon and Brown, they’d be thrilled to add a no-drama player like Green.

Tom Brady is a free agent for the first time in nearly two decades, and in order to keep him around owner Robert Kraft will be more inclined to make a move to get more playmakers around his aging quarterback.

New England currently has $42m in cap space, and a large chunk of that would go to Brady. But Kraft knows that if he wants to get Brady another Super Bowl, he will have to make some moves to add an elite wide receiver.

AJ Green, David Andrews and Sony Michel all on the same offense? Yes please.

Joe Namath can’t see Tom Brady making the same choice he did

Joe Namath has hard time believing that Tom Brady will leave the Patriots.

Joe Namath can’t see Tom Brady playing in any other jersey than a New England Patriots one.

Brady is set to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his 20-year career. Brady even put his New England house up for sale, which has led many to believe that he is on his way out of Foxborough. However, Namath isn’t buying Brady ever leaving the Patriots.

“It’s almost beyond my belief that he would go to another team under any circumstances,” Namath told ESPN. “I can’t imagine that separation. Moving out of the New England area that he’s been so accustomed to, and his family, that’s a hard thing, too. I don’t think he’ll ever leave that totally behind, I really don’t.”

Namath was faced with a similar situation in his career. His body was breaking down, so the Jets drafted a quarterback in 1976. Despite owner Leon Hess asking him stay, Namath decided it was time for a change. Instead of retiring with the Jets, Namath spent his final season in Los Angeles with the Rams. It’s a decision that doesn’t sit well with Namath to this day.

“We had dinner, and he asked me to stay,” Namath said. “I regret to some extent not being positive and saying, ‘Yes, sir.’ He really asked me to stay, and I had to explain to Mr. and Mrs. Hess that night it was time for a change.”

It’s hard to see Brady playing for anybody else other than the Patriots. Few teams offer Brady as competitive a situation, and it’s not like New England has better options under center in 2020. The Patriots still were a 12-4 team this season and just need a few more pieces around Brady to get back to a championship level.

While Brady’s free agency is the current topic of his career, the overarching question that has surrounded him for years is his retirement. At age 42, no one knows how many years he has left in the NFL. But Brady has made it know that he’d like to stick around for a few more years.

Namath is pulling for him to do so.

“I want to see him play as long as he physically and mentally wants to, man, because we’ve all seen over the years the execution that has been superb more times than not,” the Jets legend said. “We don’t get to see that kind of player, that kind of character, very often. It’s very rare.”
