The UFC is back in its Las Vegas home base this week with an intriguing featherweight matchup at the top of the bill.

UFC Fight Night 213 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] (23-6 MMA, 7-4 UFC) takes on [autotag]Arnold Allen[/autotag] (16-1 MMA, 9-0 UFC) at 145 pounds. The fight is a virtual pick’em at Tipico Sportsbook. Allen is at -115; Kattar is at -110, and our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are split, too. They have Allen with the narrowest possible 6-5 picks lead.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Max Griffin[/autotag] (18-9 MMA, 6-7 UFC) meets [autotag]Tim Means[/autotag] (32-13-1 MMA, 14-10 UFC) at welterweight. Griffin is a 2-1 betting favorite and has a 7-4 picks lead.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Waldo Cortes-Acosta[/autotag] (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is our only unanimous pick in his official UFC debut against [autotag]Jared Vanderaa[/autotag] (12-9 MMA, 1-5 UFC), who has dropped four straight. Although Cortes-Acosta only is a 2-1 favorite, he has an 11-0 picks shutout.

[autotag]Josh Fremd[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) meets [autotag]Tresean Gore[/autotag] (3-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) in a middleweight bout that has Fremd a -170 favorite at the betting window. Our pickers think it’s close, though, and have Fremd with just a slim 6-5 lead.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Dustin Jacoby[/autotag] (18-5-1 MMA, 6-2-1 UFC) is nearly a 2-1 favorite at light heavyweight against [autotag]Khalil Rountree[/autotag] (10-5 MMA, 6-5 UFC). Three of our pickers are going with Rountree in an upset.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Allen (56 percent), Griffin (58 percent), Cortes-Acosta (81 percent), Fremd (66 percent) and Jacoby (66 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

UFC Fight Night 213: Tim Means vs. Max Griffin odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 213 odds and lines between Tim Means and Max Griffin, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a welterweight bout on the main card, Tim Means and Max Griffin meet Saturday at UFC Fight Night 213 — also known as UFC on ESPN+ 71 or UFC Vegas 63 — at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the UFC Fight Night 213: Means vs. Griffin odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The fight can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims beginning at 4 p.m. ET and the main card at 7 p.m. ET.

Means is looking for a bounce-back fight after being tapped out by Kevin Holland last time out in mid-June. That snapped a 3-bout win streak, all by unanimous decision.

The veteran Means has a 3-inch height advantage, but he gives up an inch in the reach department. He holds a slight 5.01-to-4.36 significant strikes landed per minute advantage, while Griffin is a little better on the mat.

Griffin also has good punching power, and that was on display in back-to-back KO/TKO wins over Ramiz Brahimaj (Nov. 2020) and Song Kenan (March 2021). He also recorded a unanimous-decision win over Carlos Condit at UFC 264 in July 2021 before a frustrating split-decision loss to veteran Neil Magny last time out in late March.

UFC Fight Night 213: Means vs. Griffin picks and predictions

Records: Means (32-13-1) | Griffin (18-9-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

These fighters are nearing the sunset of their UFC careers, and neither can afford another loss. The difference between the fighters isn’t that much, but Griffin (-200) is a bigger puncher, and that will be why he gets the win, scoring points in the eyes of the judges.

However, you cannot risk 2 times your potential return, especially in a fight likely to go the distance.

AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

GRIFFIN BY POINTS (+140) at plus money is a solid play. He is likely to do more to catch the eye of the judges, landing more impressive punches which are likely to rock the head of Means back on occasion.

In addition, OVER 2.5 ROUNDS (-170) is a little expensive, but worth the play, with no finish expected. YES (-160): FIGHT TO GO THE DISTANCE is a little cheaper, and a decent play if you don’t want to declare a winner and want some action.

Tim Means ready for violence vs. Max Griffin at UFC Fight Night 213

Tim Means knows Max Griffin will bring it at UFC Fight Night 213 in Las Vegas, and that excites him.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Tim Means[/autotag] knows [autotag]Max Griffin[/autotag] will bring the fight, and that excites him.

Means (32-13-1 MMA, 14-10 UFC) faces Griffin (18-9 MMA, 6-7 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 213 event, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

Both Means and Griffin have been in their fair share of wars and Means expects them to inevitably deliver.

“He’s a durable guy with a lot of heart and gets in your face and fights you,” Means told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s pre-fight news conference. “I’m excited to fight Max and make it a violent fight.

“Once the cage door shuts, you have to find a reason not to like the guy across from you. So respect, but let’s get violent.”

Saturday marks Means’ 25th fight in the octagon. He’s had plenty of ups and downs and lost four of six at one point. But Means is glad that he continues to be recognized for the show he puts on for the fans.

“I get a lot of respect from the guys on the roster and from fans in general,” Means said. “I might not be one of these crazy popular guys, but I don’t want to be George Clooney famous. When you see my name on the lineup, you’re going to stop on that fight and look at the guy across from me.

“We paid attention to these things and contract deals we’ve done. When you’re able to look at that slot on the TV deal on the spikes in views, those numbers jump way up. So I might not be super famous, but people know I can fight and know I show up.”

UFC on ESPN 37 medical suspensions: Josh Emmett among 6 fighters suspended indefinitely by Texas commission

Six fighters were handed indefinite medical suspensions after what many fans are calling the most violent UFC card of the year.

UFC on ESPN 37 took place Saturday at Moody Center in Austin, Texas where the promotion put on what many fans are calling one of the most violent cards of 2022.

With violence, however, comes injuries. Tuesday, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), the commissioning body that regulated the event, released a list of medical suspensions for UFC on ESPN 37 fighters. The TDLR does not give injury specifics, but reveals the duration of suspensions.

Among those handed indefinite suspensions were main event winner Josh Emmett, co-main event loser Tim Means, Albert Duraev, Julian Marquez, Deron Winn, and Kyle Daukaus. Note: fighters can return sooner than the date listed if they receive medical clearance from a physician prior to completion of their suspension.
