Tigers of the Game: A trio of players break out and step up in Athens

When one player goes down, Auburn has three more impact players in its back pocket.

The No. 14 Auburn Tigers entered Saturday’s game with Georgia down a very important player in [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag]. Not only was Auburn playing on the road, but they would need to find an answer at forward in order to get a win.

Head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] got his answer in the form of three players who stepped up when it mattered most.

Chaney Johnson answered the call by starting at the four in place of Williams, and went on to play his best game in an Auburn uniform. Pearl praised his team’s “next-man-up” mentality and credited Johnson for his solid play in Williams’ absence.

“Chaney Johnson, first Division I start of his career. What a great game. You can see why our team is confident, it’s the next man up,” Pearl said after the game. “Chaney was terrific defensively. Offensively, he was calm. He got that ball inside, took it closer. Ira Bowman has done a tremendous job with Chaney. He’s one of the hardest workers we’ve ever had. He played 26 minutes and didn’t miss a beat. This team does like each other.”

Which players followed Johnson’s lead by making an impact in Auburn’s road win at Georgia? Here’s a look at which players stood out the most to Auburn Wire writers and Auburn fans. Here are the “Tigers of the Game” from Auburn’s victory at Georgia.

Tigers of the Game: Williams, Broome make ‘splash’ in win over South Carolina

The “Splash Bros” lived up to their nickname on Wednesday by scoring 44 combined points in Auburn’s 40-point win over South Carolina.

After sustaining a 16-point loss to Florida last Saturday, the No. 12 Auburn Tigers needed a dominating win to hop back into the SEC championship race. The Tigers got just that on Wednesday by smashing No. 11 South Carolina, 101-61.

The win over the Gamecocks marks the third time this season that Auburn has reached the century mark in points, the first time in SEC play. The strong performance was due in part to the efforts of Jaylin Williams and Johni Broome.

The duo combined to connect on 16-of-26 shots from the field and 9-of-12 from the three-point line to score 44 combined points. To boot, Broome and Williams also revealed a new nickname, “Splash Bros” to the Auburn fan base following the game.

Broome and Williams made an impact in the win, but who else made a difference? Here’s a look at which players stood out to Auburn Wire writers, as well as Auburn fans. Here are the “Tigers of the Game” from Auburn’s win over South Carolina.

Tigers of the Game: A big day for the supporting cast in Gainesville

A trio of unsuspecting players carried the load in Auburn’s disheartening loss to Florida on Saturday.

Saturday’s game was one that Auburn fans hope to forget soon.

The No. 11 Auburn Tigers had plenty of confidence heading into Saturday’s game at Florida, but it quickly diminished as the Gators had a 9-0 just over two minutes into the first half.

Auburn never gained momentum in the game, as they departed Gainesville with an 81-65 loss.

Auburn had an off-day shooting-wise by connecting on just 42% of their shots. It also did not help matters that their key players, [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], were barely a factor in the contest.

Because of this, we saw several “supporting cast members” take charge of the box score. Which players made the most noise on Saturday? Here’s a look at which players stood out the most to Auburn Wire writers, as well as Auburn fans. Here are the “Tigers of the Game” for Auburn’s loss to Florida.

Tigers of the Game: Broome, Williams hang 20 in Auburn’s crushing defeat of Alabama

Johni Broome hosted a block party on Wednesday, and Jaylin Williams delivered the points.

Revenge is a dish best served cold, and the No. 11 Auburn Tigers enjoyed a delicious platter on Wednesday evening.

The Tigers hosted rival, No. 16 Alabama, at Neville Arena in a return game from Jan. 24’s tilt which ended in a 79-74 win for the Crimson Tide. However, the next chapter was anything but close.

Auburn rattled off 55 first-half points, and its 44-point second-half effort allowed them to cruise to a 99-81 victory over their archrivals.

The Tigers won the turnover battle, 5-15. They were able to take advantage of Alabama’s mishaps by turning 15 turnovers into 22 points. Auburn also managed to score 40 points in the paint, as opposed to Alabama’s 26.

Many positive factors led to Auburn’s convincing win over Alabama, and these players played a key role in the team’s success. Here is a look at which players made a difference in the game according to Auburn Wire writers, as well as Auburn fans. Here are the “Tigers of the Game” from Auburn’s 99-81 win over Alabama at Neville Arena.

Tigers of the Game: Baker-Mazara, Broome fuel second-half comeback

Auburn stormed back to knock off Ole Miss on Saturday thanks to the on (and off) court efforts of Chad Baker-Mazara and Johni Broome.

Auburn earned another SEC road win on Saturday, although it appeared a pipe dream through one half of play.

The No. 16 Tigers trailed Ole Miss by nine points at halftime and were behind by as many as 13 points in the first half before storming back to take down the home-standing Rebels, 91-77.

Auburn shot 73% as a team in the second half, as part of a 56-point performance. The Tigers also out-rebounded Ole Miss 42-26, and out-scored Ole Miss in the paint, 44-32. Bench play was key for Auburn as well, as they earned an additional 36 points from nonstarters, compared to Ole Miss’ eight.

Six players reached double-digits in points on Saturday, while three players recorded five-or-more rebounds. It was an outstanding group effort by the Tigers, and it is time to highlight the players who played a significant role in the victory.

Tigers of the Game: Williams, Jones get Auburn back on track

Jaylin Williams returned to traditional form while Denver Jones enjoyed the best game of his Auburn career in the Tigers’ victory over Vanderbilt.

After a treacherous week that produced two straight losses, things appeared to return to normal on Wednesday for the No. 16 Auburn Tigers.

Auburn took care of business by drubbing visiting Vanderbilt, 81-54 in front of a sellout crowd at Neville Arena.  Four players reached double-figures in scoring, with three being starters. Shooting success played a key role in the win for Auburn, as they connected on 44% of their shots compared to Vanderbilt’s 27%.

Auburn also had a great night defensively by out-rebounding the Commodores, 45-34, which is the second-widest margin of the SEC slate. Vanderbilt was also held to 54 points, which ties a season-low for Jerry Stackhouse’s squad.

The vibes are slowly starting to creep back into normal territory on the Plains, and several players played a role in the momentum swing. Here is a look at which players stood out the most to Auburn Wire writers, as well as Auburn fans.

Here are the “Tigers of the Game” for Auburn’s second victory over Vanderbilt of the season.

Tigers of the Game: Broome stands out in tough loss

Johni Broome carried the Tigers again in a tough loss to Mississippi State on Saturday.

The No. 6 Auburn Tigers suffered another setback on Saturday, this time falling at the hands of Mississippi State, 64-58, at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville.

The Tigers hoped to get back into rhythm following a loss to Alabama on Wednesday, but nothing worked in Starkville for [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s squad. Auburn struggled on the boards, especially in second-chance opportunities. Mississippi State out-rebounded Auburn, 45-30, with the Tigers pulling down an abysmal six offensive rebounds.

Shooting was not particularly great also, as Auburn shot 34% from the field, and managed to score just 20 points in the paint compared to Mississippi State’s 34.

Despite the rough outing, several players managed to help Auburn play close to Mississippi State throughout. Here’s who Auburn Wire writers, as well as Auburn fans, voted for as their “Tigers of the Game” in Auburn’s loss to Mississippi State.

Tigers of the Game: Broome carries the load in tough loss

Broome recorded his 8th double-double of the season in Auburn’s tough loss to Alabama on Wednesday.

As the old saying goes… “all good things must come to an end.”

The No. 6 Auburn Tigers watched its 11-game win streak snap on Wednesday in a losing effort to rival Alabama in Coleman Coliseum, 79-75. The score was close, and the margins for error were even closer.

Auburn held a higher field goal percentage than Alabama, connecting on 42% of their shots compared to the Crimson Tide’s 38%. However, Alabama’s field goal attempts carried more substance as they connected on 11 three-pointers. The Crimson Tide also held more rebounds, second second-chance points, and recorded three fewer turnovers. Free throws were vital to Alabama’s win as well, as they succeeded on 16-of-19 attempts as opposed to Auburn’s 14-of-18.

Auburn’s Johni Broome was the star of the show for the Tigers, as he led the team in several categories such as points, rebounds, and blocks. Auburn also found aid in two bench players.

Tigers of the Game: Give Dylan Cardwell his crown

Senior center Dylan Cardwell reached double-figures for the second straight game in Auburn’s win over Ole Miss. Can anyone slow him down?

“He is focused, he is having fun.”

That quote is the beginning of an inside joke that Auburn fans will always remember about former quarterback [autotag]Bo Nix[/autotag]. However, the same can be said for senior center [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag].

Cardwell was instrumental in No. 11 Auburn’s 82-59 win over No. 21 Ole Miss on Saturday night, which pushed its win streak to 11 games and gave them the title of SEC’s last unbeaten team through five conference games. Auburn’s bench contributed 40 of the team’s 82 total points, and Cardwell led the charge by scoring 12 points as the result of an 83.3% shooting effort. He also entertained the crowd with several impressive dunks including this one early in the second half.

Cardwell has now reached double figures in two straight games and has met the mark three times so far this season. Before this season, he had scored more than 10 points in just two games over the previous three seasons.

Auburn’s impressive victory over a top 25 team, and the team’s overall win streak, is due in part to the solid play of Cardwell and the Auburn bench. However, 12 Tigers scored at least two points in the win over Ole Miss, and also contributed in a handful of other ways.

Tigers of the Game: Jaylin Williams hits the perfect note in Music City

Auburn fans were amazed by Jaylin Williams’ flawless effort in Auburn’s 80-65 win over Vanderbilt on Wednesday.

Auburn basketball’s win streak has reached ten games, and the team is playing at an incredible level.

The No. 11 Tigers traveled to Nashville on Wednesday and escaped with an 80-65 win over Vanderbilt to improve its SEC record to 4-0. Vanderbilt outscored Auburn in the second half, 41-39. However, Auburn connected on 46% of its shots throughout the game and dominated free throw shooting to leave Memorial Gymnasium with a 15-point win.

Four players reached double figures in the contest, but the most impressive performance of the game was that of graduate student Jaylin Williams. Williams, who led the team in points with 21, was flawless in Wednesday’s win. He reached 21 points by connecting on all seven of his shots from the field, which included a 2-for-2 mark beyond the three-point line, and made all five of his free throw attempts.

Who else made an impact in Auburn’s victory over Vanderbilt? Here’s a look at which players Auburn Wire writers, as well as Auburn fans, voted for as their “Tigers of the Game.”
