Who are the 8 nominees for Best Male Artist at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards?
That was one of my favorite Super Bowl halftime shows ever.
For a Super Bowl halftime performance in Los Angeles, it was only fitting for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar to dominate the stage.
This was a show designed for television, and it told an incredibly compelling story for those who were tuning in.
With this performance, Dr. Dre flexed his influence on not only the city of Los Angeles but also on music as a whole. He played an instrumental role in bringing many of these artists into our life, helping to not only discover their talent but to popularize them as well.
It was such a nice reminder that after all these years, Andre Young is Still D.R.E. and we never should have forgotten about Dre. It’s Dre’s world and we are just living in it.
They’re pals!
The Weeknd’s new album, Dawn FM, has dropped on Friday.
And to a lot of people’s surprise, there’s a special guest on it that they might not have seen coming: Jim Carrey’s on it!
Yes, THAT Jim Carrey. The actor known for Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and so much more has a few cameos on the album as a DJ of a faux radio station.
On the opening track, he says, “You are now listening to 103.5 Dawn FM. You’ve been in the dark for way too long. It’s time to walk into the light and accept your fate with open arms. Scared? Don’t worry. We’ll be there to hold your hand and guide you through this painless transition.”
So why is Carrey on the album (besides the fact that Jim Carrey is awesome)? Let’s dive in:
Fantastic!
The Weeknd gave us so much with his Super Bowl 55 halftime show: some of his amazing songs, a dizzy feeling for fans while watching him in a hall-of-mirrors segment and, of course, so many memes.
And I guess the recording artist has seen some of those memes, because he shared one of them on Wednesday, in which the dialogue of The Joker from The Dark Knight — doing the same “selfie” shot as the one we saw on Sunday — is playing over The Weeknd’s performance.
Hey, if you can’t laugh at yourself … right?
Here’s The Weeknd’s tweet, that went extremely viral:

Here is the full set.
The Weeknd’s halftime show at Super Bowl 55 included so many of his hits — Starboy, Can’t Feel My Face, I Feel It Coming and Blinding Lights were among them.
But there was the selfie camera angle that made everyone watching at home very dizzy. The positive side of that was it made for a hilarious meme. As our Nate Scott wrote, the halftime show was always going to be difficult in 2021, but it was a reminder that The Weeknd has a bunch of really good songs, including that finale with his latest big hit.
So if you missed it or you wanted to watch it again, here you go!

Canadian pop singer The Weeknd held the spotlight for the Super Bowl LV halftime show at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium
The spotlight on the halftime show for Super Bowl LV was on The Weeknd.
Noted for his versatile vocal style, music production, and eccentric presentation, The Weeknd is often cited as an influence to contemporary music.
Among the world’s best-selling music artists, with over 75 million records sold, The Weeknd has won three Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, nine Juno Awards, and has been nominated for an Academy Award. He holds several chart records, being the first artist to simultaneously hold the top three positions on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart with “Can’t Feel My Face”, “Earned It”, and “The Hills”. The Weeknd was awarded the Allan Slaight Award by Canada’s Walk of Fame.

A lot of FaceTime jokes.
The Weeknd delivered a halftime show at Super Bowl 55 that included the Blinding Lights singer dancing with a bunch of masked dancers and a bunch of songs from his list of hits.
It also included one sequence in which he went inside and appeared to hold a camera as if it was his smartphone taking a selfie video. For many fans watching the game, it made them seasick as The Weeknd swayed around inside a mirrored studio of sorts, creating a dizzying effect.
It also resulted in a hilarious meme that made its way around social media. Here’s a sampling:

The Weeknd made the most of a bad situation, but also made some bad choices that hurt his performance.
The Weeknd was good. The Weeknd was fine.
The singer’s halftime show at the Super Bowl was always going to be difficult this year. With limited fans in the stadium, a hesitance to bring in any guest performers (which resulted in Abel Tesfaye singing alone), and a need to keep things mostly toned down, it was always going to be hard to make the show feel special.
Things were always going to be difficult, and then they got even worse — the sound mix on the first song was so bad that many fans at home were left turning up the volume or wondering what was even happening.
They eventually ironed out the mix, but then The Weeknd made another misstep — trying to create a more dynamic atmosphere by going inside a set that was supposed to create a funhouse effect. It ended up being disorienting (and kind of nauseating), and had more than a few fans comparing his camera work to that of The Joker in The Dark Knight.
— Joey (@JoeyMulinaro) February 8, 2021
That combined with the attempt to create some hysteria with the masked background dancers (were they robots? half-bandaged mummies?) led to moments that felt more disorienting than inspiring or cool. It was just sort of weird.
It was one of those times where he was best served by just playing his songs — and this performance did remind me that The Weeknd has an awful lot of good songs.
And that all led to the final cut, and The Weeknd’s one true shining moment of the halftime show. He ran down to the field and with all his half mummies, started running and dancing to his new hit, “Blinding Lights.”
Gone was the hysteria. Gone was The Joker vibe. It was sweet release — a great song playing and a bunch of people all running around at a concert, dancing their faces off. It’s what we all want. It was, for that moment, perfect.

This was… weird.
The Weeknd delivered an unusual solo performance during halftime of Super Bowl LV on Sunday night, playing through his catalog of hits in a unique one-man show that earned mixed reviews from fans on social media.
Midway through the performance, The Weeknd entered a hall of mirrors and held the camera close to his face as he spun around repeatedly. The bafflign sequence went way longer than it should have, and left some viewers feeling… a bit nauseated.
