The Matrix Resurrections debuts all-new trailer at The Game Awards 2021

“Nothing comforts anxiety like a little nostalgia.”

Despite its status as an event focused on video games, The Game Awards 2021 just debuted the latest trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, the long-awaited follow-up to the Wachowskis’ illustrious film series slated for release later this month.

While that might seem a little odd at face value, it makes sense when considered in tandem with The Matrix Awakens, an ambitious new video game project that was also shown during tonight’s event. The fact that Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) from the original movies appear in both Awakens and Resurrections is just the first of an entire web of links connecting the two.

While Resurrections is a traditional film in the same vein as The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, The Matrix Awakens is a high-brow concept designed for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It’s intended to represent a simulation of the titular Matrix and what it means in the films it’s a part of, while also informing the plot of Resurrections itself, which, at this point, you’ll probably know includes The Game Awards as part of its core narrative. Yeah, we think it’s pretty weird too.

As you can see in the latest trailer, The Matrix Resurrections is just as cryptic as you’d imagine, playing with your expectations and just that little bit of nostalgia. And yes, even though we see Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus in the form of memories, the reason he may not actually exist in this film is thanks to a niche video game.

The Matrix Resurrections is due to air in cinemas on Dec. 22. It will also be available to stream for HBO subscribers in the US for a month from that date.

The Matrix Awakens is our first look at true next-gen graphics

The demo, made with Unreal Engine 5, shows some mind-blowing sequences.

PS5 and Xbox Series X/S owners had almost given up on the idea of watching some proper next-gen graphics after spending a year on consoles that haven’t been able to provide a quantum leap yet. Performance-wise, players have witnessed a decent jump ahead thanks to 120fps support and bigger, more refined open-world environments. However, 2021 is not over yet and has one final surprise. The Matrix Awakens is a true look into the future.

The Matrix Awakens is an interactive experience for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

Enter the Matrix.

Geoff Keighley officially announced The Matrix Awakens  Monday, confirming  earlier leaks of its existence

Anyone that owns a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S can pre-load The Matrix Awakens  now, though it won’t be available until Dec. 9 after its official reveal during  The Game Awards. It’s still not confirmed if this is a video game or something else, with the Playstation Store description doing little to clarify.

“Get ready for a glimpse into the future of interactive storytelling and entertainment with [Unreal Engine 5] in this free, boundary-pushing cinematic and real-time tech demo.” reads the Playstation store page.

The description states that Lana Wachowski, director and writer of the upcoming Matrix Resurrections film, had a hand in creating The Matrix Awakens. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be in this as well.

Epic Games also released a trailer for The Matrix Awakens, which you can check out below. That’s an in-engine render of Reeves, not the actor himself, by the way. The valley, it is so uncanny.

The  KID A MNESIA Exhibitionthe digital exhibit by Radiohead, was another of these interactive experiences that Epic Games have done recently. Calling them “games” might be a bit much, hence the peculiar wordplay in product descriptions.

Lawrence Fishburne sadly won’t be part of this project,  perhaps because his character died in The Matrix Online.

Laurence Fishburne might not be in ‘Matrix Resurrections’ because Morpheus died in a video game

This gets weird real fast.

Ever heard of a video game called The Matrix Online? You probably haven’t, since it was an MMORPG based on The Matrix that shut down over a decade ago. The thing is, this long-forgotten game might be the reason why Laurence Fishburne didn’t appear in the new Matrix Resurrections trailer.

“I am not in the next Matrix movie,” Fishburne said via Collider. “You would have to ask Lana Wachowski why because I don’t have an answer for that.”

Well, the reason for Fishburne’s absence might be due to Morpheus, his character from the series, getting killed off in The Matrix Online. Yes, a video game that you can’t even play anymore might be why Fishburne isn’t reprising what is arguably his most iconic role.

Check out the scene in question from The Matrix Online where Morpheus gets killed for yourself below.

Taking place after the original film trilogy, The Matrix Online was to be a continuation of the series various storylines. It’s supposedly to be canon, according to none other than the Wachowskis themselves.

“Our films were never intended for a passive audience,” the Wachowskis said via IGN back in 2005. “Yet the fact that the Matrix films are three of the most successful adult films in history suggests that there are other people like us. Those are the people, the people who thought about it, who worked at it, who we ultimately made the trilogy for, and it now makes perfect sense to us that they should inherit the storyline.”

They continued: “For us, the idea of watching our baby evolve inside the virtual bubble-world of this new radically developing medium, which has in our opinion the potential of combining the best attributes of films and games, of synthesizing reality TV with soap opera, RPGs and Mortal Combat, is fantastically exciting.”

So there you have it: The Matrix Online might be why Morpheus, and by extension Laurence Fishburne, isn’t in The Matrix Resurrections
