ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. are forming a new streaming service for sports

Another streaming service is on the way.

ESPN, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, FOX and Warner Bros. Discovery have reached an understanding on principal terms to form a new Joint Venture (JV) to build an innovative new platform to house a compelling streaming sports service. The platform brings together the companies’ portfolios of sports networks, certain direct-to-consumer (DTC) sports services and sports rights – including content from all the major professional sports leagues and college sports. The formation of the pay service is subject to the negotiation of definitive agreements amongst the parties. The offering, scheduled to launch in the fall of 2024, would be made available directly to consumers via a new app. Subscribers would also have the ability to bundle the product, including with Disney+, Hulu and/or Max.

The platform would aggregate content to offer fans an extensive, dynamic lineup of sports content, aiming to provide a new and differentiated experience to serve sports fans, particularly those outside of the traditional pay TV bundle.

By subscribing to this focused, all-in-one premier sports service, fans would have access to the linear sports networks including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ABC, FOX, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, truTV, as well as ESPN+.

Key Highlights:

ESPN, FOX and Warner Bros. Discovery would form a new joint venture to develop, launch and operate a streaming sports bundle of linear networks and certain DTC sports content and services.

Each entity would own one-third of the JV, have equal board representation and license their sports content to the joint venture on a non-exclusive basis.

Bob Iger, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company said, “The launch of this new streaming sports service is a significant moment for Disney and ESPN, a major win for sports fans, and an important step forward for the media business. This means the full suite of ESPN channels will be available to consumers alongside the sports programming of other industry leaders as part of a differentiated sports-centric service. I’m grateful to Jimmy Pitaro and the team at ESPN, who are at the forefront of innovating on behalf of consumers to create new offerings with more choice and greater value.”

By shelving ‘Coyote vs. Acme’, Warner Bros. Discovery continues to show its artistic untrustworthiness

You just cannot trust Warner Bros. to actually release a movie it’s made anymore.

For the third time since taking over Warner Bros., CEO David Zaslav has killed a movie.

Per Deadline, the studio has completely shelved a finished film in the upcoming Looney Tunes-inspired comedy Coyote vs. Acme, which starred notable faces like John Cena, Will Forte and Lana Condor. It’s reportedly because the studio, go with us here, wants to write the project off on taxes to save $30 million on the film’s $70 million budget.

Coyote vs. Acme joins the shelved Batgirl adaptation and the animated spinoff Scoob Holiday Haunt! as recent Warner Bros. projects that have gotten completely scrapped despite being largely completed for alleged tax incentives.

Here’s the statement from WB, per Deadline: “With the re-launch of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in June, the studio has shifted its global strategy to focus on theatrical releases. With this new direction, we have made the difficult decision not to move forward with Coyote vs Acme. We have tremendous respect for the filmmakers, casts, and crew, and are grateful for their contributions to the film.”

Shelving Batgirl had the weak excuses of a full DC universe reset and allegations of poor test scores, which Deadline, shared did not befall Coyote vs. Acme as the film reportedly tested well for audiences. Making it even stranger is the fact that new DC co-head James Gunn both produced and received a story credit on the now-axed Looney Tunes project.

Gunn’s DC co-head Peter Safrin defended the move to put the largely completed Batgirl away in the vault, but we can’t imagine either of them would be thrilled with shelving a completed film Gunn worked on.

Now, a third Warner Bros. film will never see the light of day, allegedly so Warner Bros. Discovery can save a little bit on taxes.

If you think this is good for movies or art, allow me to sell you some pristine beachfront property in the tippity top of the North Pole.

Zaslav’s crude cost-cutting measures are absolutely abysmal for one of the legacy film studios and the medium in general. Make no mistake; even absolute film disasters just don’t get thrown away. The list of historically shelved films is sparse for a reason.

Warner Bros. has released plenty of big-budget stinkers in the past; remember, this is the studio that released 1999’s Wild Wild West.

Unless a film is genuinely too troubled to be released (see Jerry Lewis’ ill-fated Holocaust drama The Day the Clown Cried, which may still see the light of day eventually) or involved an individual surrounded by controversy (see Kevin Spacey’s unreleased Netflix Gore Vidal biopic), studios usually take one on the chin and just put a movie out there because of the financial investment and out of respect to the hard-working artists.

The precedent Zaslav and WB Discovery are setting has literally never been done in the history of movies. Completed films based on intellectual properties just don’t get canned. Five years ago, you would’ve bowled over in laughter if you were told a film set in the Batman universe would never make it to audiences, or that a film featuring the studio’s legacy Looney Tunes characters would get trashed for a tax credit.

Now, it’s becoming a genuine practice at one of the biggest studios in Hollywood, and that is absolutely horrible for the future of the industry. There is just no good that comes from this outside of an alleged momentary respite on WB Discovery’s financial documents.

Killing a movie that is already completed feels like the cardinal sin a corporation can commit against an artist. Even if the film isn’t any good, a bond of trust is formed between a distributor and an artist that has historically stipulated that the film will at least get released.

Films have gotten buried in the past with limited marketing campaigns and no theatrical releases, but the projects most always make it to the audience. It’s common (if a bit impossible) to chop down a tree in the middle of the woods and try to hush the sound, but it’s extremely stupid to just chop one single tree down in a giant forest to grow a small patch of grass in its place.

We’re entering a very delicate environment where one of the largest film studios in the world just cannot be trusted to release a movie it greenlights. After the 2020 HBO Max fiasco that saw WB foolishly release its entire 2021 theatrical slate in theaters and on streaming simultaneously, you would’ve thought the studio wouldn’t want to do more to alienate artists after it ran off one of the few tentpole filmmakers working in Christopher Nolan.

Nolan apparently is willing to come back WB, but moves like this might give him serious pause to stay with Universal for the time being. While it would seem genuinely unfathomable for the studio to shelve a film from a major director like Nolan, what in the past year or so would completely dismiss that concern outright?

Unless it’s the literal Barbie sequel, it does not seem like any film that Warner Bros. makes while Zaslav runs the company is guaranteed a release if tax incentives come into play. It makes the studio wholly untrustworthy with artists who actually want audiences to see their films, lest they wind up in the dumpster for an alleged quick save in the tax book.

Between this horrible trend, the TCM controversy and Max pulling its own films and television shows off the service, it’s looking dour for a company that used to shine a golden light for the entertainment industry.

Warner Bros. cannot be trusted as a film and television company any longer with this current leadership as it is. Especially as long as they keep axing completed films, how can anyone take this studio seriously as actually caring about the mediums it claims to support?

The Matrix Awakens is our first look at true next-gen graphics

The demo, made with Unreal Engine 5, shows some mind-blowing sequences.

PS5 and Xbox Series X/S owners had almost given up on the idea of watching some proper next-gen graphics after spending a year on consoles that haven’t been able to provide a quantum leap yet. Performance-wise, players have witnessed a decent jump ahead thanks to 120fps support and bigger, more refined open-world environments. However, 2021 is not over yet and has one final surprise. The Matrix Awakens is a true look into the future.

Warner Bros is making a Smash-style fighter where Gandalf can beat up Batman

According to reports, Warner Bros is once again bringing its worlds together – this time for a Super Smash Bros-style fighting game.

According to reports, Warner Bros is once again bringing its worlds together – this time for a Super Smash Bros-style fighting game. The rumor began on Reddit and has since been confirmed by GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb, who has his grubby mitts all over everything.

The only thing Grubb debunked was the claim that the game was in development by NetherRealm, the studio most famous for the Mortal Kombat series. It appears as if the rest of the report is accurate at the time of writing.

According to the leaker, the game is called Multiverse, and it sees characters from across Warner Bros’ IP library battling against each other.

[mm-video type=video id=01fjvy5wa6ytvp2tfxss playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fjvy5wa6ytvp2tfxss/01fjvy5wa6ytvp2tfxss-5f0a1f05292f2a627021cf38670df272.jpg]

Here’s a list of the characters that are apparently featured, presumably with more to come when we get the official announcement:

  • Shaggy (Scooby-Doo)
  • Gandalf (Lord of the Rings)
  • Tom & Jerry
  • Batman
  • Fred Flinstone
  • Mad Max
  • Johnny Bravo

Multiverse was allegedly born from a meme where Shaggy takes his “Ultra Instinct” form, transforming into an anime-style fighter with a flaming aura. While it sounds absurd, the meme appeared in the opening title of Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, an animated movie from the publisher (thanks, VGC).

This also wouldn’t be the first time Warner Bros has experimented with mixing its worlds together. Lego Dimensions was built around this concept and saw Batman enter the worlds of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Elsewhere, there’s Space Jam: A New Legacy, which takes place inside a Warner Bros server where its characters exist and intermingle.

Internet thinks that Warner Bros. may have killed movie theaters with huge HBO Max move

HUGE.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit the movie-theater industry hard as people around the country have largely avoided (or been prohibited from) gathering in indoor crowds.

But even the optimism over a vaccine’s arrival may not be enough to save the theater industry, especially with the Thursday announcement from Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Pictures Group announced that it will release its entire 2021 film slate for streaming on HBO Max to run concurrent with the theatrical release. And by “entire film slate,” Warner Bros. means EVERYTHING. The Matrix, Dune, Space Jam, Suicide Squad will all be on HBO Max in addition to theaters.

In terms of the movie industry, it’s difficult to overstate how consequential this announcement will be for theaters.

Most blockbusters set for a 2020 release were delayed in order to have its full theatrical release (huge for revenue) in 2021. But this announcement could very well change how the movie theater industry functions in the future.

Twitter was already seeing it as the end for theaters.

We’ll have to see if the other studios — NBC Universal, Viacom, Disney — make similar moves with their streaming services. But for now, it doesn’t look good for theaters in 2021.

Leak: ‘Space Jam 2’ to include characters outside of the Looney Toons

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James could be trying to dunk on Pennywise and The Joker, according to a new Space Jam 2 leak.

LeBron James throwing the ball on the break to Harry Potter for a dunk on The Joker? Well, while none of the details are confirmed, according to the latest leaks from the ‘Space Jam 2’ production, pretty much any character from the Warner Bros. universe could pop into the remake of the 1996 classic starring Michael Jordan.

According to leaks that came out from ScreenGeek.net and screenwriter Ben Mekler, the new ‘Space Jam’ will take place in a multi-verse, where characters from other Warner Bros. properties will be popping up, in addition the Looney Toons. Some leaks have included Pennywise from the IT movie, The Joker, The Mask, and The Wicked Witch of West.

LeBron, Bugs Bunny, and the other basketball stars from the WNBA and the NBA will have some pretty vicious villains that they have to take down in the upcoming ‘Space Jam 2.’ I, for one, cannot wait to see what appears to be an incredibly bonkers premise.

Feel Free to Comment Season 1, Ep. 1: ‘In the Offing’

Sean Highkin and Erik Garcia Gundersen start with their first true episode of ‘Feel Free to Comment’ following ‘Survivor’s Remorse.’

Yesterday I introduced you to ‘Feel Free to Comment,’ a new podcast brought to you by myself and my friend Sean Highkin of Bleacher Report about the LeBron James/Maverick Carter-produced show ‘Survivor’s Remorse,’ that aired on Starz for four seasons. If you are still wondering why we have a podcast about this show, please listen to the first episode.

In the first official episode of ‘Feel Free to Comment,” Sean and I break down the pilot episode of the show, “In the Offing,” where a young Cam Calloway has just signed his first big-money contract after entering the unidentified pro basketball league that is the stand-in for the NBA.

The episode follows Calloway moving to his new city of Atlanta, alongside his manager/cousin Reggie Vaughn, and the rest of his family, who we meet in the episode. It also shows that even when success comes, it’s still impossible to escape where you grew up. Until you do.

‘Feel Free to Comment’ is available wherever you get your podcasts. Follow the podcast on Twitter and Instagram.

LeBron James shows up on Instagram sporting ‘Space Jam 2’ merch

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James showed off some new merch for the ‘Space Jam 2’ on his Instagram on Thursday night.

Despite the current hiatus across American life, outside of essential businesses, movies and television shows have stopped most of their regular production alongside the current hiatus in sports. However, LeBron James seems very confident that ‘Space Jam 2,’ which he spent most of the last summer filming, is still going to come out in 2021 as previously scheduled. LeBron posted as much on Thursday afternoon, sharing a ‘Space Jam 2’ Dad hat while writing the caption “2021.”

2021. 🐰🥕 🎥 🍿👑

A post shared by LeBron James (@kingjames) on

While LeBron went on the record today saying he hopes that the NBA season isn’t canceled, he still luckily has some other milestones to focus on. Also, the “Space Jam 2” hat is pretty dope and I’m fairly certain fans will be wondering when and where that is going on sale. Some ‘Space Jam 2’ merch went on sale through Nike during All-Star Weekend, but there will likely be much more whenever we get closer to the hopeful release next summer.

Don Cheadle to play villain in ‘Space Jam 2,’ Paul Scheer says

Cheadle has long been a part of the project but his role wasn’t quite clear until his Black Monday co-star dropped it a few days ago.

As the boredom of being stuck inside during quarantine has been getting to people, there have been lots of untold stories getting dropped during these times. A few weeks ago, Carmelo Anthony told the story of the time LeBron James jumped off a boat to save his life. And then we got another bit of interesting LeBron news from an unexpected source, actor/comedian Paul Scheer.

During an episode of The Athletic’s ‘Clip City’ podcast, Scheer broke the news that Don Cheadle, with whom Scheer stars on the Showtime show ‘Black Monday,’ will play the villain in the ‘Space Jam 2,’ starring LeBron James.

Actually Don Cheadle, who I do ‘Black Monday’ with, he’s the bad guy in ‘Space Jam [2],’ and he said LeBron’s really great. He was great in ‘Trainwreck‘ too

(Hat-Tip to AwardsCircuit)

Cheadle has been a well-known part of the cast but it was previously unclear what his role would be in the reboot of the 1996 production. LeBron is expected to be joined by several other NBA and WNBA players, including Damian Lillard and Diana Taurasi.
