AEW Dynamite results: Omega-Vikingo delivers the goods, but Don Callis prevents a Hangman reunion

AEW isn’t promoting this week’s Dynamite from Independence, Missouri this way, but if it wanted to, it could make an excellent claim that it has the past, present and future of pro wrestling all on one card.

The past? That’d be Sting, still going strong in the Year of Our Lord two thousand twenty-three, taking part in a six-man tag alongside Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin against The Butcher, The Blade and Kip Sabian.

The present? Take your pick. But start with Jon Moxley vs. Stu Grayson as the Blackpool Combat Club and Dark Order continue their ongoing rivalry. Plus The Outcasts are trying to stake their claim to control of the women’s division, with Toni Storm taking on Skye Blue. If that weren’t enough, Kenny Omega is going to be in a rare singles match on Dynamite.

That’s where the future comes in. As you may have heard, Omega is stepping in against El Hijo del Vikingo, the 25-year-old sensation who is revolutionizing lucha libre (which is really saying something). It’s a pairing that almost happened in late 2021, but fans will now get to see on free TV. It’s almost certain to be spectacular.

The Gunns vs. Top Flight would fall into that future category as well. It’s brothers against brothers for the tag team titles, and both teams are likely to be a factor in AEW or anywhere they go for years to come.

Opening Bell: Roman Reigns on Raw, dream match on Dynamite

Welcome to the Opening Bell, where we round up what’s been announced for WWE (Raw and SmackDown) and AEW (Dynamite and Rampage) programming for the week we’ve just begun.

WWE Raw preview – Monday, March 20, Enterprise Center, St. Louis

The Road to WrestleMania barely has any exits left on it before Los Angeles. That means we need to start seeing the two main event superstars together, and that’s what we’ll get Monday night on Raw in St. Louis.

Cody Rhodes has done more than just challenge Roman Reigns, as he’s also played a major role in reuniting Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. That’s not great for the Bloodline, so the Tribal Chief can no longer stay silent on the matter. Reigns will “address the issue personally” this week … and you have to figure Rhodes will be on hand to hear what he has to say.

In contrast, Logan Paul has had a much easier time of it in his feud with Seth Rollins, as last time they were in the same ring together, he was able to get one over on the Visionary. On Raw, Paul will put on a live episode of “Impaulsive TV,” so we’ll see if he continues to have the mental edge or if Rollins plans to strike back in a very public way.

Austin Theory is headed for a WrestleMania showdown with John Cena, but he decided to pick a fight with the Street Profits in the meantime. The United States Champion was able to defeat Angelo Dawkins and send a message to Cena at the same time last week, but now Montez Ford will be looking for some payback in St. Louis.

AEW Dynamite preview – Wednesday, March 22, Cable Dahmer Arena, Independence, MO

The term “dream match” arguably gets thrown around a bit too often in pro wrestling in the 2020s, but here’s one that qualifies: Kenny Omega vs. El Hijo del Vikingo. Call it present vs. future or just two of the best wrestlers in the world going at it, but this match Tony Khan tried to schedule for 2021 is finally going to happen on Dynamite.

That’s a great selling point but not the only one for this week. Stu Grayson reminded everyone last week why he was missed during his time away from AEW, and he’ll return to the ring in Missouri to take on Jon Moxley, always a tough night at the office. Skye Blue will attempt to stand up to The Outcasts when she faces Toni Storm.

Champions? Yep, Independence is getting some of those, too. After squabbling over luggage on Rampage, The Gunns will defend their tag team titles against Top Flight in a battle of brothers vs. brothers. And we’ll see if a training montage and a “good ass cookie” will help Stokely Hathaway survive in a No Disqualification match against FTW Champion Hook.

We wouldn’t bet on it. Sorry, Stoke.

WWE SmackDown preview – Friday, March 24, MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas

It’s Vegas, baby! The penultimate SmackDown before WrestleMania 39 is going to be pretty physically close to L.A. as the days count down to the Showcase of the Immortals.

Speaking of LA, as in LA Knight, he still doesn’t have a match lined up for WWE’s biggest show. Nor does Rey Mysterio, even though there’s one WWE fans really want to see. We’ll see if either or both get closer to one when they collide in Vegas.

And even though Cody Rhodes is a Raw talent, his WrestleMania main event status means he’s been working both shows as his date with destiny draws near. He’ll attempt to stay busy and stay winning when he goes up against Ludwig Kaiser on SmackDown.

AEW Rampage preview – Saturday, March 25, Cable Dahmer Arena, Independence, MO (recorded March 22)

Remember when AEW Rampage didn’t get started until after midnight ET because of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament last week? Good times.

This week, it’s moving not just times but days. AEW Rampage will air on Saturday, March 25 instead of Friday (thank soccer this week instead of basketball), but AEW hasn’t officially announced any matches for it yet. You know the drill by now: Keep an eye on Dynamite and AEW’s social media accounts to get a heads up on what’s in store for this week’s Rampage.

AEW Rampage results: Rey Fenix tries to dethrone Powerhouse Hobbs

AEW Rampage is usually on at 10 p.m. ET on Friday nights. Sometimes it airs at other times, or occasionally on other days, because TNT is showing sports. This week? We’re staying up late, baby!

That’s because arguably the biggest sporting event that TNT airs is the first few rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. You might also know it as March Madness. Please don’t sue us for using it here, we’re doing it for non-commercial purposes.

In any case, Rampage might be worth waiting for, if you like Rey Fenix. As we do. He’ll try to take the TNT Championship from a man who just won it and isn’t likely to release his hold on it easily, Powerhouse Hobbs.

Taya Valkyrie made some waves when she showed up on Dynamite, and she’ll make her in-ring AEW debut on this show too. Let’s see how she looks and what else is in store now that hoops is finally over … until tomorrow.

AEW Revolution results: MJF outlasts Bryan Danielson in OT

Can AEW World Champion MJF go the distance with an opponent who is arguably the best wrestler on the planet?

All AEW pay-per-views have questions that are answered as the events unfold, but AEW Revolution 2023 has one that’s bigger than most. No one has any doubts about MJF as an entertainer, as his talent there is apparent. In the ring, he’s shown a lot so far as well.

But his prior work in AEW pales in comparison to what he’s about to do at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Bryan Danielson is quite simply a master of his craft, someone who has done and still can do it all in the ring.

Going an hour with the American Dragon is impressive enough. Winning? That might be something that changes opinions of MJF, even among people who still hate the character he portrays.

Even with that main event taking up a full hour, Revolution looks like much more than a one-match card. The women’s division will have an intriguing three-way battle for its top title when Jamie Hayter defends against both Saraya and Ruby Soho. The former is definitely an enemy, while the latter has been trying to avoid taking sides, but both will be stiff challenges.

The World Trios Championship and World Tag Team Championship will both be on the line at Revolution, as will the TNT Championship when Samoa Joe tries to hold off an angry Wardlow. “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry and Christian Cage will try to bury each other, perhaps literally. And Jon Moxley and Hangman Adam Page will go at it one more time in what promises to be a bloody Texas Death match.

AEW Revolution 2023 betting odds: MJF, Jungle Boy among biggest favorites

The latest AEW Revolution odds also suggest most people believe Wardlow will take the TNT Championship from Samoa Joe.

Bryan Danielson is one of the best pro wrestlers on the planet. Maybe the best. But that doesn’t mean most people think he’s going to dethrone AEW World Champion MJF in their 60-minute Iron Man match at AEW Revolution.

As we always do ahead of big pay-per-views, we’ve taken a look at the Revolution betting odds to get the pulse of public opinion (because actually betting on events where someone already knows the outcome seems kind of silly). And of the eight matches on the Revolution card, MJF is the heaviest favorite, according to the current lines at Betfair.

What gives? It’s possible that just as we did when we broke down all the matches, people simply believe it’s too early into MJFs reign of terror for him to drop the title. Why build him up for as long as AEW did just to have him stumble in his first title defense?

“Jungle Boy” Jack Perry is also someone the oddsmakers think will have his hand raised on Sunday night. He’s a big favorite over former mentor turned bitter rival Christian Cage in something called The Final Burial. Whatever that stipulation turns out to be, the masses are riding with Perry.

Of the rest of the matches, the most uncertainty is in the four-way tag team title match, where The Gunns are favored to retain, but just by a smidge over former champs The Acclaimed. Let’s take a look at the lines for the whole card, converted to U.S.-style numbers.

The Gunns on fans reacting to them beating The Acclaimed: ‘We ripped their hearts out’

AEW World Tag Team Champions The Gunns joined Under the Ring to talk second generation pressure, how they got started in wrestling and more.

In pro wrestling, if you can get fans to react to you, you’re usually doing something right. The Gunns are showing they’ve taken that mind set to heart even early in their careers.

Austin and Colten are bona fide second generation wrestlers as the sons of WWE Hall of Famer and current AEW coach and manager Billy Gunn. As the culmination of a long-running storyline where they were friends with and then rivals of The Acclaimed — who Billy Gunn sided with when forced to make a decision — The Gunns shocked many by beating Max Caster and Anthony Bowens for the AEW World Tag Team Championship.

Instead of a chorus of boos, the crowd reaction in that instant was one of stunned silence. And then, yes, boos. On the latest episode of the Under the Ring podcast, recorded just before The Gunns defend their titles against The Acclaimed and two other teams at Revolution, Austin Gunn told host Phil Strum why that moment was so fulfilling.

“When I was pinning Bowens, 1-2-3 in the middle of the ring, and that crowd went silent, and I looked at their faces and they were just like … We ripped their hearts out,” Austin Gunn said. “America’s top team, AEW’s top tag team that everybody loved.”

“It was the best feeling in the world,” he added, noting that it was validation that despite criticism on social media, they were doing things right.

AEW Revolution 2023: Start time, card, predictions and more

AEW Revolution in San Francisco is the first AEW PPV of 2023. Here’s everything you need to know, including date, start time and card.

If you were to ask a pro wrestling fan what AEW Revolution is all about, they’d probably respond with something like, “well, it’s the first AEW pay-per-view of the year!”

Indeed it is. Though Revolution hasn’t had much of a chance to build up its own unique identity yet — in large part due to it being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in two years of its brief history — it has some built-in importance as the PPV that really kicks a year in AEW into gear.

It also has a history of AEW World Championship main events, and the 2023 event should be no different. MJF hasn’t held the title all that long, but he’ll get a test worthy of a legendary reign: a 60-minute Iron Man match against Bryan Danielson. It’s the kind of bout that automatically makes fans think better of anyone who turns in a top notch performance, so it stands the chance of boosting MJF’s in-ring status to the same level of esteem his microphone work is held in.

The length of that match means this card might be slightly lower in terms of number of matches than a typical Revolution (there were 13 bouts last year, including those on the pre-show). That said, there could be more added even in this final week.

AEW Rampage results: Young Bucks get a W but House of Black is hunting them

You know what would be a cool way for a wrestling fan to end a Friday night (or kick one off, if you’re young enough for such things)? The Young Bucks vs. Aussie Open on free TV. Lo and behold, that’s what we’ve got on this episode of AEW Rampage.

That’s the good stuff, baby. Also good stuff is Action Andretti, everyone’s favorite out of nowhere story, back in … ahem, action. He’s taking on Sammy Guevara in what should be a real test of his in-ring chops.

Plus there’s the not so small detail of Revolution being less than 10 days away. There’s room on the card for a few more matches, so we’ll see if this episode confirms some.

Sounds like a pleasant hour to us. Let’s see how it shakes out.

AEW Dynamite results: Ruby wins but has had it with women’s division turmoil

Live AEW Dynamite results for Feb. 15, 2023 from Laredo, TX, including a three-way battle between Toni Storm, Britt Baker and Ruby Soho.

It’s time for the first part of a little Texas two-step for AEW. Tonight it’s Dynamite from Laredo, and the path to Revolution should start getting a bit more clearly illuminated.

But the highlight of tonight’s show should be the in-ring action, which will be plentiful and varied. The headline bout is a Texas Tornado tag team match (never more appropriate than when it’s, you know, really in Texas) that features Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli going up against Rush and Preston Vance.

Want an even bigger tag team match? We’ve got that too. Orange Cassidy, The Acclaimed and Daddy Ass are on one side of it, with Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, Satnam Singh and Sonjay Dutt on the other.

The women’s division has been full of intrigue, and Ruby Soho has been in the middle of most of it. She’ll experience that in the most direct way possible in Laredo, as she’s slated to be in a three-way dance that also involves Toni Storm and Britt Baker. Is this the night where Soho will have to pick a side?

There’s much more, as well. Even AEW World Champion MJF will appear, even though he’s made it clear he’d rather not. Will be run scared again from his Revolution opponent, Bryan Danielson, or has he finally found his courage ahead of the pay-per-view?
