On3 predicts LSU Baseball will move up D1Baseball’s rankings after undefeated weekend

On3 believes the Tigers will rise up the D1Baseball poll after their weekend slate.

For most teams in the NCAA, the first weekend of the college baseball season has now come and gone. For LSU, the Tigers have one more game as they take on Central Arkansas one more time as LSU tries to start the season 4-0.

We have seen some highlights and some lowlights this weekend at Alex Box Stadium as LSU won 11-8, 2-0, and 27-5. The Tigers ace, [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] ran into some issues in his first start of the season but the bats came to his aid to win game one for the Tigers. In game two, [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] made his first start of the season and he was phenomenal. In game three, LSU broke a record for the most singles in a single ball game (20) and tied the record for most hits in a game (27).

On3 believes the Tigers will rise up the D1Baseball poll after their weekend slate. Florida and Arkansas were both ahead of LSU and both of them lost a game this weekend.

Previous Ranking: No. 4 (+2)
Weekend Record: 3-0 (Finishes series vs. Central Arkansas on Monday)

The defending national champions had a four-game, split opening series, with two games against VMI and two against Central Arkansas. After getting just 2.2 innings from Thatcher Hurd on Friday, the Tigers held on to an 11-8 victory against VMI. Luke Holman made the most out of his LSU debut on Saturday against Central Arkansas, with 5.1 shutout innings, leading the Tigers to a 2-0 win. LSU blew it open on Sunday against VMI, impressing all-around in a 27-5 rout. LSU will get another battle against Central Arkansas on Monday. – On3

How to watch LSU baseball host VMI in Sunday rematch at The Box

The Tigers are looking for a 3-0 start to the season in their rematch against VMI on Sunday.

It hasn’t exactly been pretty, but the Tigers are 2-0 to begin the year after an 11-8 win over VMI on Friday and a 2-0 win over Central Arkansas on Saturday.

Now, the Tigers will return to the field at Alex Box Stadium on Sunday afternoon for a rematch against the Keydets, which sit at 1-2 on the season having split games against Central Arkansas on Friday and Saturday.

It’s not quite clear who will take the mound for LSU as the Day 3 starter after [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] and [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] got the nod on Days 1 and 2, respectively.

Still, here’s everything you need to know as coach Jay Johnson’s team looks to move to 3-0 on the season Sunday.

LSU baseball knocks the rust off in season-opening win over VMI

LSU had some issues to began the year, but it came away with the win.

This was not the start to the season [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] wanted. All the Tigers had to knock the rust off as they struggled against VMI in the first game of the season, surviving at home to win 11-8.

Hurd was pulled after 2.2 innings. He gave up four runs on five hits, four strikeouts and a walk. [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] came into the game for him and got the Tigers out of a jam. [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] got the scoring started in the bottom of the second with a three-run bomb to left field to make it 3-0 LSU.

VMI would then score four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead before LSU answered with a [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] double to make it 5-4 Tigers.

VMI scored the next two runs to take a 6-5 lead before LSU answered with five runs of their own to take a 10-6 lead. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jones walked before [autotag]Mac Bingham[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double.

VMI scored the next two runs to cut the lead to 10-8 before Travinski hit a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend the lead to 11-8.

In the top of the ninth, we got our first look at [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag]. He retired the side 1-2-3 to win the game 11-8. LSU will take on Central Arkansas on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT as [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] will make his Tigers debut on the mound.

LSU baseball reveals pitching plan ahead of first weekend of the season

Thatcher Hurd will get the nod on Friday, while Alabama transfer Luke Holman will start on Saturday.

The 2024 LSU baseball team will begin its national title defense on Friday at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers will face VMI on Friday and Sunday, and it will take on Central Arkansas on Saturday and Monday.

LSU has a lot to replace this spring, and that starts with the pitching rotation, which lost No. 1 draft pick [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] this offseason. But we now know how the weekend starting rotation will look, at least on Friday and Saturday.

Coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] confirmed that [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag], the hero from last season’s College World Series run, will get the nod on the bump on Friday nights. He’ll be followed by Alabama transfer [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag], who served as the Tide’s ace last spring, on Saturdays.

The Sunday and Monday spots are still to be determined, and players like [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag], [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] and [autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag] could all be in the mix to start those games.

LSU will begin its season on Friday night against VMI with Hurd on the mound at 2 p.m. CT.

Eight Tigers make D1Baseball’s top 200 prospects list

Six LSU players cracked the top 50.

D1Baseball has released its list of the top 200 prospects for the 2024 MLB Draft. The LSU Tigers have eight players who have made the list.

[autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag], [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag], [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag], [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag], [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag], [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag], [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] all made the top 200 of those players and six of them made the top 50 of all of those players with one player just on the outside at No. 51.

Even after losing the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in the MLB draft, [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the Tigers reloaded with talented players out of the transfer portal and out of the most recent recruiting class.

LSU will take on VMI on Friday in Game 1 of the 2024 season. In the meantime, here’s a rundown of all eight players.

Three Tigers make D1Baseball’s Preseason All-SEC team

One of the three made the First Team and the other two garnered Second Team honors.

D1Baseball has released their Preseason All-SEC Team and three LSU Tigers have made the team. One of them made the first team and the other two garnered second-team honors.

[autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], who D1Baseball named the best third baseman in college baseball, is the lone Tiger to make the first team. White finished 2023 with a .374 batting average as he hit 24 doubles, 24 homers, and 105 RBI.

For the second team selections, both of them are pitchers. [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] and [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] are the other two Tigers to make the Preseason All-SEC team. Holman, a transfer from Alabama, served as the Ace for the Crimson Tide last season and finished the season with a 7-4 record and a 3.67 ERA. He was one of the best pitchers in the SEC and he looks to keep it that way this year.

Hurd served as the unsung hero of the 2023 World Series run. He started the season cold but then caught on fire at the right time. He finished the season with an 8-2 record and a 5.68 ERA. He pitched the World Series-winning Game 3 against the Florida Gators where he pitched six innings and only allowed two runs on two hits as the Tigers won 18-4.

Two Tigers named to Golden Spikes Award watch list

LSU begins its 2024 season on Feb. 16 against VMI.

Today, USA Baseball announced the preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list, and two LSU Tigers made the list. Third baseman, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], and right-handed pitcher [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] are the two Tigers who made the watch list.

White transferred to LSU last season and set the SEC on fire. He finished the season with a .374 batting average, 24 doubles, 24 homers and 105 RBI. He was the cleanup hitter who hit behind the No. 2 pick in the MLB draft, Dylan Crews. His biggest moment of the year was a walk-off homer against Wake Forest in Omaha.

Holman transferred to LSU after spending his past two seasons at Alabama. He finished 2023 with a 7-4 record and a 3.67 ERA as the Ace of the Crimson Tide staff. Holman joins [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] and [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] to make a pitching trio that has a chance to be the best pitching rotation in the NCAA.

LSU baseball picked to finish second in SEC West by media

The Tigers are a preseason top-five team once again, but the path through the SEC is never easy.

LSU is just over a week away from beginning its national title defense, and while coach Jay Johnson’s team lost a pair of studs in [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], as well as several other key contributors, it has retooled this offseason.

The Tigers enter the year as a preseason unanimous top-five team as they return stars like [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] and added one of the top transfer portal classes in the nation to go with an elite recruiting class.

However, the path won’t be easy. The SEC is loaded again, as always, and the media picked the Tigers to finish second in the West division this season behind another team the media is quite high on.

Here are the full preseason SEC media standings. Note: First-place votes are indicated by parentheses.

Two Tigers named preseason All-Americans by Baseball America

LSU starts its 2024 season next Friday against VMI.

Baseball America has released its preseason All-American list and two LSU Tigers have made the list. Third baseman [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and right-handed pitcher [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] are the two Tigers that made the list.

White and Hurd are two of the Tigers star players who are returning from last year. White, a junior from St. Pete Beach, Florida, finished last season with a .374 batting average with 24 doubles, 24 homers and 105 RBI. His biggest highlight last year was hitting a walk-off homer against Wake Forest in Omaha during the College World Series.

Hurd, a junior from Manhattan Beach, California, finished last season with an 8-2 record and a 5.68 ERA. His ERA is a little elevated due to the struggles he had at the start of the 2023 season. He ended the year on a high note as he pitched the series-clinching game against Florida in the College World Series.

LSU starts its 2024 season next Friday against VMI.

LSU baseball ranked No. 2 in preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

LSU starts the season next Friday afternoon as it takes on VMI from Alex Box Stadium.

The USA TODAY Sports released the preseason coaches poll as we head into the 2024 baseball season. The defending national champion LSU Tigers will start the season as the No. 2 team in the country.

Wake Forest is No. 1, Florida is No. 3, Arkansas is No. 4 and TCU rounds out the top five in the poll. The Demon Deacons played an instant classic against the Tigers in Omaha last year as two of the best pitchers in the country went toe-to-toe. Rhett Lowder and [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] shut down hitters all night long. Eventually, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit a walk-off homer to win the game for the Tigers in extra innings.

LSU defeated the Florida Gators in the College World Series final as [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] pitched a gem from the mound in Game three and the Tigers bats were on fire. White and Hurd both returned to the team for this Spring and they are looking to defend the title and attempt to go back-to-back.

LSU starts the season next Friday afternoon as it takes on VMI from Alex Box Stadium.
