Report: Lions to start David Blough on Thanksgiving

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Detroit Lions are planning to start David Blough on Thanksgiving Day in a Week 13 matchup against the Chicago Bears.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Detroit Lions are planning to start David Blough on Thanksgiving Day in a Week 13 matchup against the Chicago Bears.

With Matthew Stafford ruled out with a fracture in his back and reserve quarterback Jeff Driskel listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, the Lions were utilizing third-stringer Blough on the first team all week during practices.

Blough entered the league via Purdue and caught the Lions’ attention at the East-West Shrine Game, but after going undrafted Blough signed with the Cleveland Browns. Blough went 25 of 43 for 271 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the preseason.

The Lions acquired Blough from the Browns after trading for him at the 53-man roster cutdowns — swapping seventh-round draft picks in the 2021 draft.

If the Lions were to lose Blough during the game on Thursday, the team would turn to tight end Logan Thomas who was a quarterback at Virginia Tech and tried his hand under center in the NFL before making the position switch.

Falcons Week 13 injury report: Freeman will play, Jones questionable

After Wednesday’s practice, the Falcons listed wide receiver Julio Jones as questionable with a shoulder injury. Jones will be a game-time decision for Thursday’s game.

The Atlanta Falcons (3-8) will play the New Orleans Saints (9-2) on Thursday in the NFL’s prime-time slot on Thanksgiving.

After Wednesday’s practice, the Falcons listed wide receiver Julio Jones as questionable with a shoulder injury. Jones will be a game-time decision on Thursday, but the team has a backup plan if he cant play, according to offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

Defensive end Takk McKinley is questionable as well after being limited in practice all week, and playing only a small portion of the team’s defensive snaps in Week 12.

The Falcons got some good news, though, with starting running back Devonta Freeman set to return on Thursday after a two-game absence. Check out Atlanta’s complete Week 13 injury report for their Thanksgiving showdown with New Orleans below.

Saints wearing Color Rush uniforms on Thanksgiving vs. Falcons

The New Orleans Saints will be wearing their Color Rush uniforms for their Thanksgiving night road game against the Atlanta Falcons.

[jwplayer EWg6LERn]

The NFL allows teams to wear alternate jerseys only three times per season, and the New Orleans Saints already used their Color Rush variants twice in Weeks 3 (on the road with the Seattle Seahawks) and 4 (at home against the Dallas Cowboys), winning both games. Now, they’ll be wearing the clean Color Rush duds for the third and final time of the 2019 season on Thanksgiving night versus the Atlanta Falcons, the team announced on social media.

It’s frustrating that New Orleans can’t use these stellar uniforms more often. Write the NFL’s New York office, your local members of Congress, or any other authority figures and petition them to promote the Color Rush specials to full-time use as the Saints’ away jersey-pants combination.

For their part, the Falcons are pairing their black throwback jerseys with white pants, which they announced earlier this year in their 2019 uniform schedule. Comparing that uniform against New Orleans’ Color Rush creates one seriously dynamic combination.

As for superstitious fans: here are the win/loss records for every uniform combination the Saints have used since Sean Payton was hired as head coach back in 2006. While this list is focused on that time frame, it’s worth remembering that the Saints also wore alternate gold jerseys during a 2002 game against the Minnesota Vikings, which they lost 32-31. Those jerseys haven’t been seen since.

  • White jerseys, white pants: 3-0 (1.000)
  • Color Rush alternates: 5-2 (.714)
  • Black and Gold throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  • Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  • Black jerseys, black pants: 40-26 (.606)
  • White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  • White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

America’s best Thanksgiving high school football rivalries

For more than a hundred years, high school football teams have played on Thanksgiving Day. Here are the nine best rivalries that stand a century since the beginning.

1. The State Line Game

Easton (Pa.) and Phillipsburg (N.J.) have played against each other on Thanksgiving each year since 1916

Easton (Pa.) vs. Phillipsburg (N.J.) — It’s impossible to reference high school football on Thanksgiving Day without discussing Easton and Phillipsburg. The schools sit on opposite sides of the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border, and the game is played at a neutral site at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. The game often has been a sellout or near sellout and has even received national TV coverage from ESPN in years past. Given that the contest has been played since 1905, and on Thanksgiving since 1916, there’s plenty of heritage and history here (and some fantastic snowy highlights to boot), not to mention heated passions fighting for the Forks of Delaware Trophy, named in honor of the Delaware River, which separates the towns.

After a one-year miss, when the game was moved to the Saturday following Thanksgiving in 2014 due to a freak snowstorm (Phillipsburg won that contest, 19-14), Easton blanked Phillipsburg, 26-0, in the 109th iteration in 2015 and also captured the 2016 game, 24-14, to cap a winning season … while keeping Phillipsburg from achieving precisely that. The 2017 iteration finished as a 21-14 Easton win, helping the Rovers finish 8-5, while sending the Stateliners to their first loss.

The Stateliners fell short again to Easton again in 2018, 31-26, in another thriller.

Dirk Koetter says Falcons have plan if Julio Jones can’t play Thursday

The Falcons may be without star wide receiver Julio Jones when the team takes on the New Orleans Saints on Thanksgiving night.

The Falcons may be without star wide receiver Julio Jones when they take on the New Orleans Saints on Thanksgiving night.

Jones missed practice Monday and Tuesday while recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered during Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers. It’s anyone’s guess if he will suit up, and Atlanta is saying he’s a game-time decision.

The Falcons’ chances of completing a season sweep of New Orleans would take a hit if Jones can’t go Thursday. He leads the team with 950 receiving yards, and impacts the game even when he’s not getting the ball.

However, Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said the team has a plan in place if Jones sits out:

Obviously Atlanta would love to have its top weapon against a 9-2 Saints team, especially with tight end Austin Hooper likely out as well.

Second-year wideout Calvin Ridley should see an uptick in production if Jones can’t go. Over the past two games, Ridley has 14 catches for 228 yards and two touchdowns.

Also, keep your eyes on Russell Gage, who has already been highlighted as a fantasy football sleeper for Week 13. Gage is coming off of a career-best performance against the Bucs, grabbing eight catches for 76 yards.

Check back before kickoff on Thursday for the team’s inactives list.

Lions legend Barry Sanders named honorary captain for Thanksgiving Day game

For their annual Thanksgiving Day game, the Detroit Lions have named Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders as an honorary captain.

For their annual Thanksgiving Day game, the Detroit Lions have named Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders as an honorary captain.

Sanders, who played his entire career in Detroit from 1989-1998, is remembered for putting on a show every Thanksgiving. In his ten games on turkey day, he ran the ball 210 times for 931 yards and eight touchdowns.

The 51-year-old entertained jokes of a return for Thanksgiving last season, and now has the honor to lead the team into the field for this year’s prime time game.

Being named honorary captain isn’t the only his story for Sanders this Thanksgiving.

The former Lions running back has teamed up with Nike to release limited edition Air Turf Zoom Jet 97’s. The shoes have been designed to resemble the cleats that Sanders famously wore throughout his career as a Lion.

This is a limited-edition shoe with only 2,053 pairs made — mirroring the exact number of rushing yards Sanders had during his iconic 1997 season.

They currently retail for $179 and can be purchased at Ford Field, and will then go on sale for $150 online, starting at game time tomorrow (12:30 PM, EST).

5 things to be thankful for if you’re a Vikings fan

The team has played very good football as of late, with a lot of things to look forward to heading into the holidays.

The Minnesota Vikings are heading into the holiday season with an 8-3 record and some tough tasks up ahead. Their next game, a Monday Night Football showdown against the Seattle Seahawks, seems to be the most difficult game left on the schedule.

The Seahawks are ahead of the Vikings in the Wild Card race with a 9-2 record, and also control their own destiny within their respected division. The most impressive aspect to Seattle has been the MVP worthy play of quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wilson is completing over 67 percent of his passes for 2,937 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also has a passer rating of 112.1, a stat that is second only to Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.

The Vikings are in complete control of their own destiny, and they have a couple hard games left with Seattle and Green Bay. With a two-game lead in the Wild Card race, and a chance to win out and win the division, Vikings fans have plenty to be thankful for as the holidays are approaching.

Here are five things Vikings fans should be thankful for heading into the holiday season.

QB Kirk Cousins

The Vikings quarterback has been playing just as good as any in the NFL, but for some reason still has many doubters left. Lamar Jackson is the clear frontrunner for the MVP hardware, but that shouldn’t negate the fact that Cousins should be in the conversation.

Cousins is completing 70.6 percent of his passes for 2,756 yards and 21 touchdowns. Those numbers are impressive alone, but he also leads the league with a passer rating of 114.8.

The turnovers have still been somewhat of an issue because of his fumbles, but he has only thrown three interceptions (with one of those bouncing off the hands of Stefon Diggs). His touchdown to interception rate is 7:1, which is an elite statistic.

For some reason, Cousins still gets treated like the plate of vegetables that gets passed around the table on Thanksgiving. Instead, he should be looked at like the pot of gravy that completes the meal. He is underrated, and without him the team isn’t quite there.

RB Dalvin Cook

Without the resurgence of Dalvin Cook, the performance of Cousins wouldn’t be as good. Cook has opened up the play action game for the Vikings, showing how good Cousins can be outside of the pocket.

Cook is averaging 4.8 yards per carry, with 1,017 yards on the ground and 11 touchdowns. Through 11 games of the season, those numbers put Cook on pace to finish the season with just under 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Any running back would dream of having numbers on the ground similar to what Cook has done in 2019, but the stats don’t stop there. He has also caught the ball 45 times, and added an additional 455 yards.

Cook is on pace to have over 2,000 all purpose yards and 16 touchdowns. He has proven that he is the key to the offense, and if it wasn’t for the MVP award only considering quarterbacks, Cook’s name would also be in the conversation.

LB Eric Kendricks

Eric Kendricks is on pace to have his best season yet as a Vikings. The always underrated linebacker is leading the team with a total of 86 tackles, but his name always comes up when discussing who has lead the team in tackles since he arrived in Minnesota.

Being able to find the right gaps to hit and get to the running back is crucial as a linebacker. Kendricks has continued to dominate in that aspect of his game, but that isn’t the most impressive thing he has done this season.

Not only has Kendricks already surpassed the previous mark of pass breakups by a linebacker, but he is also towards the top of the NFL regardless of position. With 12 total pass break ups, Kendricks is only behind Titans cornerback Logan Ryan who has 16, then a list of five players (that includes Stephon Gilmore and Jaire Alexander) who have 13.

Kendricks clearly made it a priority to get better in pass coverage in the offseason, and it has shown on game days. His pass breakup covering Ezekiel Elliott of the Dallas Cowboys may have shifted the entire 2019 season for the Vikings. It is time for Kendricks to get some national respect, and finally make a Pro Bowl.

The return of Adam Thielen

With the most crucial stretch of the schedule ahead, the Vikings are set to get their other star receiver back at the right time. Adam Thielen has been battling a hamstring injury for over a month, but he joins a team that has gone 3-0 in games he’s missed completely.

The offense has exploded while Thielen has been sidelined, meaning the rich are going to get richer with his return. In his absence, Irv Smith Jr., Kyle Rudolph and Bisi Johnson have all stepped up and proven they can be reliable pass catchers for the team. Stefon Diggs has continued to show off his elite route running ability, and Cook has emerged as a top three running back in the NFL.

Adding Thielen back into the mix is only going to make this offense better. With a quarterback playing at an MVP level, the addition of Thielen is going to make the offense much harder to defend.

Gary Kubiak

The most underrated offseason move in all of 2019 free agency didn’t come from the signing of a star player. Instead, it came from the addition of Gary Kubiak to the Vikings offensive coaching staff.

Without the addition of Kubiak, who knows where the Vikings offense would be. Kevin Stefanski showed flashes of being a great offensive mind in 2018, but it seems as if Kubiak has helped get Stefanski to the next level.

Bringing the outside zone scheme with him to the Vikings, Kubiak has turned the run game into a top five unit in the NFL. The Vikings are averaging over 142 rushing yards per game, forcing defenses to key in on the run game.

While making opposing defenses key in on Cook, Kubiak has opened up the play action pass game for Cousins. The Vikings quarterback has been the best in the league when utilizing play action.

The addition of Kubiak isn’t something that gets talked about frequently, but he has played a crucial role in getting the Vikings to 8-3.

The Vikings are coming out of the bye in complete control of their own destiny. The team has played very good football as of late, with a lot of things to look forward to heading into the holidays.

Behind Enemy Lines: Previewing New Orleans Saints vs. Falcons

The New Orleans Saints need to defeat the Atlanta Falcons on Thanksgiving night to clinch a third consecutive NFC South division title.

[jwplayer jcPYpmHE]

The NFL’s three-game slate for Thanksgiving is headlined by the New Orleans Saints’ road trip to play the Atlanta Falcons; despite Atlanta’s sorry record (the Falcons are 3-8 on the year so far, and a combined 21-24 in the years since they blew a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI) this game has big implications for both teams. A Falcons loss could signal the end for embattled head coach Dan Quinn; it would also allow the Saints to clinch their third straight NFC South title and punch their ticket for the playoffs.

So with so much on the line, we reached out to Matt Urben over at Falcons Wire to get the best-informed perspective. Here’s what he had to say in our Q&A:

1. The Falcons handed out a beat down to the Saints and Panthers in back to back weeks, but Jameis Winston and the Bucs beat them in a boat race last Sunday. Have the Falcons found some winning strategies coming out of the bye or are they simply executing better?

It’s been a little bit of both, honestly. A lot was made of Dan Quinn relinquishing defensive coordinator duties to Jeff Ulbrich and Raheem Morris, but it comes down to the players executing and playing with confidence. The Falcons also moved Ricardo Allen to strong safety during the bye week and the coaching staff has credited him with improving the defensive communication by getting to play more in the box.

2. Julio Jones has missed two days of practice, as has starting tight end Austin Hooper. What’s the plan if neither of Matt Ryan’s top weapons can play Thursday?

Austin Hooper is almost certainly out, but Julio Jones is still a mystery. Missing practice or being limited early in the week has been pretty common for Jones, but he was noticeably in pain while playing through a shoulder injury in Week 12.Calvin Ridley has stepped up with Hooper out and has built great chemistry with Matt Ryan. Also, second-year WR Russell Gage had a career-best eight catches for 76 yards last week.

3. How is the new defensive play calling approach working? It gave the Saints trouble with six sacks against Drew Brees, but are they still getting pressure often?

The Falcons had just seven total sacks entering that Week 10 upset, and combined for 11 over the next two weeks. Desmond Trufant’s return has helped in the secondary, but the team we saw play in Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers looked a lot like the one fans grew accustomed to seeing during those first eight weeks. Atlanta did not record a sack, but did intercept Jameis Winston twice. It wasn’t a complete drop off in terms of pressure, the team just came up short of making plays when they had the chance to.

4. What is the biggest possible difference Saints fans will pick up on in this rematch of the game they saw just a few weeks ago?

Something that may have been overlooked in that Week 10 game was just how well Atlanta’s offensive line played against a very good Saints defense. The Falcons kept things going with another stellar performance up front in Week 11.The Bucs brought them back to earth on Sunday, however, and they could struggle to protect Ryan after getting exposed last week. I expect Sean Payton to have a better game-plan this time, and to attack some of the same areas he saw Bruce Arians, go after in the Falcons secondary.

5. Alright, who’s winning this thing? What is your final score prediction?

This is one of those games that while my head says the Saints will win, my gut tells me the Falcons may get up for this one the way they did three weeks ago when these teams met. I’ll go with my head, though, and say New Orleans wins, 27-23.

Let’s be honest: Turkey stinks and should be avoided on Thanksgiving

Turkey is boring and tasteless.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

I don’t know why I need to provide more than just that headline above but then again I do get paid to write (kinda) well thought out arguments and I think my boss might still be subscribed to this newsletter, so I better explain myself a little more here.

Tomorrow a lot of you are going to sit around a table with loved ones and carve into a big turkey that nobody is really all that excited about because – and say it with me – turkey stinks and should be avoided on Thanksgiving.

I’m here to help you avoid that fate, as there’s still time until your guests arrive. Your menu doesn’t have to be set just yet.

Thanks to tradition many of us are programmed to get a turkey during  Thanksgiving week, figure out yet again how long to cook the darned thing, and then dump a bunch of sides on the turkey to make it seem like it’s actually good.

Sure, there are a bunch of things you can do with a turkey while preparing it and then while cooking it to try to trick yourself into thinking it’s flavorful but we all know what the end result is going to be. Oh, you put butter under the skin before cooking it? Oh, you coat it in herb butter before putting it in the oven? Oh, you throw a bunch of cut up vegetables in the pan with it while it cooks?

Cool stories, same outcome – total blahness

Turkey is a boring, tasteless meat that is rightly ignored 364 days a year. And calm down, I know turkey sandwiches are popular, but have you ever seen anyone smile while either ordering a turkey sandwich at a shop or while making one at home? Have you ever seen someone at work pump their fist and go, “Yes! I brought a turkey sandwich for lunch today!”

No, you haven’t. Because we all know just how dull and non-delicious this bird is.

Heck, turkey isn’t even offered at most restaurants because restaurant owners  know nobody is silly enough to go out of their house and waste money on such a disappointing meal.

Instead, we’ll devote a whole day and maybe travel through time zones just to sit down and slap some slices of a turkey breast on your plate. How sad.

So what should you do instead of making turkey on Thanksgiving? I don’t know – maybe try making something that is tasty and desirable for those who have come over to your house to eat?

You know what people/non-vegeterians love to eat? Smoked meats. A smoked pork butt is perfect for a Thanskgiving dinner. It can smoke slow and low all day while you watch football and consume more wine than you probably should.

Or what about a brisket? Now there is a delicious treat. It will take longer to smoke than a pork butt and is a little more labor intensive but once it’s done people will be yelling at you to slice it up and slop it on their plate.

Sides for smoked meats are easy, too – just break out your classic sides of mac and cheese, brussel sprouts, potatoes au gratin, you name it. You can even still have stuffing because you’re an adult and can make these types of decisions.

Not into smoked meats? How about a pot roast or prime rib or make a bunch of homemade pizzas with your family?

Just anything but turkey. It’s time that we move away from turkey. This boring bird has held its power over us for way too long. We deserve to sit back and stuff our faces with something that actually puts a smile on our faces.

And turkey ain’t it.
