Get excited: the New Orleans Saints announced that they will be wearing their popular “Color Rush” variant uniforms in their prime-time matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving. The gold-on-white jerseys are among the best looks the team has used in the Sean Payton (dating back to 2006), and also their winningest, with a 9-3 record and a win percentage of .750.

Hopefully it makes a difference. The Saints are managing a ton of injuries on offense and defense, working without their best running back (Alvin Kamara), offensive lineman (Ryan Ramczyk), and defensive lineman (Marcus Davenport). It’s an uphill battle against one of the NFL’s hottest teams.

For the curious, here is how the Saints have performed in each of their different uniform combos during Payton’s tenure as head coach, including the playoffs:

  1. “Color Rush” alternates: 9-3 (.750)
  2. White jerseys, white pants: 8-3 (.727)
  3. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-14 (.622)
  5. White jerseys, black pants: 42-26 (.618)
  6. Black jerseys, black pants: 46-32 (.590)
  7. White jerseys, gold pants: 33-24 (.579)

Are you buying into the shifting line for Week 12’s Thanksgiving nightcap between the New Orleans Saints and the Buffalo Bills, or do you think the Saints have a real shot at winning in a big spot?

It’s not going to be easy, but there’s reason to think the Saints could surprise a lot of people and upset the visiting Bills. New Orleans has run the ball effectively, averaging 117.9 rushing yards per game, while the Bills’ shaky run defense bottomed out with 264 rushing yards allowed in last week’s game against Colts stud Jonathan Taylor. If the Saints can overcome their injuries on offense and play tighter coverage on defense, they’ve got a chance.

Still, this doesn’t feel like it’ll be a high-scoring affair. Here are our score predictions:

Lions vs. Bears: Game day inactive players for Week 12

Four of the five inactive Lions are injury-related

Jared Goff is officially active and expected to start when the Detroit Lions take the field on Thanksgiving. That’s the biggest takeaway from the gameday inactive player lists for both the Lions and the Chicago Bears.

Goff was officially questionable with his oblique injury. After warming up, the Lions decided the regular starting quarterback was good to go. Tim Boyle, who started for Goff last week, will be the backup. Third QB David Blough is one of the five inactives.

The Lions inactive players:

  • QB David Blough
  • OLB Trey Flowers
  • OT Matt Nelson
  • WR Trinity Benson
  • RG Halapoulivaati Vaitai

All but Blough are injury-related.

As for the Bears…

  • QB Justin Fields
  • WR Allen Robinson
  • DT Akiem Hicks
  • DE Mario Edwards Jr.
  • RB Damien Williams
  • S Teez Tabor
  • TE Jesper Horsted

Seahawks QB Geno Smith shares holiday greetings on Thanksgiving

Seattle’s backup quarterback Geno Smith shared a holiday message on Twitter this morning.

The Seahawks won’t be playing until Monday night, so Seattle fans are free to enjoy the holiday and some rare stress-free football Thursday and through the weekend.

Seattle’s backup quarterback Geno Smith shared a holiday message on Twitter this morning.

Since it’s a holiday we don’t want to think too hard about it, but it’s tough not to wonder if Seattle might have a better record if Geno Smith had started the last two games instead of a clearly-not-right Russell Wilson.

Smith is not a better quarterback by any stretch of the imagination. However, he is healthy and at the very least he’s been more productive on third down this season, as others have pointed out.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us, in any case.

Lions vs. Bears preview: Who has the advantage?

In our weekly preview series, Alyssa Barbieri from Bears Wire and Jeff Risdon from Lions Wire went deep into the matchup to determine who has the advantage at the five key factors for winning football games in the NFL.

The Detroit Lions look to notch their first win of the season in a rematch with the Chicago Bears. Thursday’s Thanksgiving matinee gives head coach Dan Campbell his first chance to face a team for the second time. Hopefully it goes better for Detroit than the first matchup, a 24-14 loss in Week 4 at Chicago that was not nearly as close as the final score indicates.

When it comes to determining who wins football games, there are a number of factors that contribute to a victory. Solid quarterback play, winning the line of scrimmage, protecting the football and taking it away, controlling important situations and overcoming or taking advantage of an injury situation.

While the team has a ton of work to do (especially on defense), the Jets have solid pieces to build around over the next few years. The 2021 draft class looks like a slam dunk, while the 2020 class has a few strong contributors. The Jets also have a bevy of picks in 2022, which should help strengthen the team’s foundation.

Here, let’s put all the losing aside for a second and look at eight reasons why the Jets should be thankful this holiday season.
