Four reasons why Texas WR Xavier Worthy is set up for a massive season

Xavier Worthy could be looking at a historic season in 2023.

Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy faced a bit of criticism toward the end of his sophomore season.

Worthy had a fair share of drops, a lack of visible chemistry with quarterback Quinn Ewers and an overall dip in production from his freshman All-American campaign.

Despite what many considered a down year for Worthy in 2022, he is still one of the more productive active receivers in the nation. The speedy wideout has hauled in 21 touchdown passes in his two seasons as a Longhorn, good for No. 2 in the country and on pace with some of the best pass catchers in Texas football history.

Worthy’s ceiling is as high as any wide receiver in college football. If he and the Texas offense can put all the pieces together, we could be looking at a historic season this fall.

Here is a look at four reasons Xavier Worthy is set up to have a monster 2023 season.

WATCH: Texas WR AD Mitchell snags one-handed touchdown from Quinn Ewers

It is easy to see Mitchell is a welcomed addition to Texas’ wide receiver unit.

Texas wide receiver AD Mitchell made his presence known in the Longhorns’ Orange-White spring game on Saturday.

The Georgia transfer made a handful of plays in the game, including a highlight-reel touchdown catch in the second quarter. Mitchell went way up in the air to snag a Quinn Ewers pass with one hand for the score. The touchdown put his team up 21-3 before the half.

It is easy to see Mitchell is a welcomed addition to Texas’ wide receiver unit. His ability to stretch the field opens up the opportunity for Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington and JT Sanders to thrive. Mitchell immediately raises the ceiling of the Longhorn offensive attack.

Team White took down Team Orange 21-10 to win the spring game. Texas next takes the field against Rice to kick off the 2023 campaign.

HOOKED: Texas flips four-star WR DeAndre Moore from Louisville

Texas adds another elite wide receiver.

Texas adds another elite wide receiver to its 2023 recruiting class with an early signing period flip of DeAndre Moore Jr.

The four-star wideout had previously been committed to Louisville. The Cardinal could not fight off the late push from Steve Sarkisian and Texas’ staff. Georgia was also in the mix of late, but Moore ultimately decided on Texas as his future home.

247Sports composite rankings list Moore as the No. 17 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 95 overall prospect. He joins five-star Johntay Cook and four-star Ryan Niblett in what makes up an excellent wide receiver haul for the Longhorns.

Moore is a speedy player with great hands and route running. He excelled at the highest level of high school football playing a St. John Bosco in California. Moore profiles as a perfect dynamic playmaker for Steve Sarkisian’s offense.

Texas WR Jordan Whittington is not taking anything for granted

It is clear Jordan Whittington has earned the respect of everyone involved in the program.

Texas wide receiver Jordan Whittington has suffered from injury after injury over the course of his college career. The senior has been limited to just 13 games throughout his first three years at Texas.

Whittington has finally been able to stay on the field in 2022 and is taking advantage of his opportunity. He has snagged 28 passes for 381 yards on the season. Whittington got into the endzone for the first time in the year against Iowa State last Saturday.

His has been instrumental in Texas’ improvement we have seen so far this season.

Steve Sarkisian and his Longhorns teammates rave about how important of a role Whittington plays both on and off the field. It is clear he has earned the respect of everyone involved in the program.

Whittington spoke about how his experiences dealing with injuries have changed his mindset on the game of football, leaving everything out there for his team.

WR Agiye Hall finding a role in the Texas offense

Sarkisian hinted that we could be seeing more of the redshirt freshman wideout as early as this weekend.

Texas wide receiver Agiye Hall hauled in his first pass as a Longhorn in the 37-34 loss to Texas Tech. Continue reading “WR Agiye Hall finding a role in the Texas offense”

Texas WR Xavier Worthy is in store for another monster season

Xavier Worthy is set up to take his game to the next level.

Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy had a historic freshman season in 2021.

Worthy cemented his spot in Longhorn history books with his 62 catches for 981 yards and 12 touchdowns. Those stats shattered Texas’ first-year receiving records and proved good enough to earn freshman All-American honors.

The Longhorns’ No. 1 pass-catcher is set up to improve upon his already impressive numbers this season.

Steve Sarkisian is known for putting his wide receivers in a good position to put up huge stats and that will not change in 2022. Worthy is the undoubted top target in an offense that has the potential to be one of the best in the country.

Texas added a strong group of talent to its offense over the offseason including new starting quarterback Quinn Ewers. A retooled wide receiver core around Worthy takes some of the attention away from him, freeing the speedster up to show off his playmaking ability.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian adresses Agiye Hall’s recent suspension

“When the time is right, we’ll have him back on our team.”

Texas wide receiver Agiye Hall was suspended from the Texas football program after he was arrested by university police last Thursday.

Hall has been charged with a Class B misdemeanor of criminal mischief equal to or greater than $100 but less than $750. Hall’s arrest was a result of illegally removing a parking boot from his vehicle.

Steve Sarkisian was asked about Hall’s suspension in his postpractice press conference on Monday.

“We’re working with Agiye, we’re working with his family to get him in a situation where he can be a really functional part of this team and the goal for him, the goal for us, is to play great football at the University of Texas, graduating from the University of Texas, and be a great teammate and walk out of here an even better person than he was when he arrived. So we’re putting all the pieces in place to help him do that. When the time is right, we’ll have him back on our team.”

The coaching staff continuing to work toward getting Hall back is good news for the Longhorns. Texas’ wide receiver room took a major hit when Isaiah Neyor tore his ACL in practice over the weekend.

Hall is an exceptional talent who figures to be in the mix for playing time once his off the field issues are settled.
