Big 12 Basketball: No. 9 Texas at No. 23 TCU preview and predictions

Texas travels up I-35 to take on TCU.

No. 9 Texas travels to No. 23 TCU on Wednesday for a Big 12 matchup with massive implications. The Longhorns can clinch a share of the regular season conference title with a 2-0 finish to the year.

Texas is eyeing a sweep of TCU after an 18-point comeback victory against the Frogs on Jan. 11. Texas has dominated the series in recent years, winning eight of the last nine matchups between the two.

Getting off to a good start is going to be key for Texas this time around. The Longhorns do not want an early deficit to let a rowdy TCU crowd impact the game.

Texas’ frontcourt saw success in the first round against the Frogs. Timmy Allen and Dylan Disu each scored over 15 points in the win and will look to replicate that success again.

TCU is getting healthy at the right time as we approach the NCAA Tournament. All-conference guard Mike Miles is back in the lineup after dealing with an injury midseason, he picked up a double-double in TCU’s win over Texas Tech on the weekend.

FULL PREVIEW: No. 18 Texas vs No. 4 TCU

Crowd noise can change the result of the game.

The Texas Longhorns will play their biggest conference home game in years on Saturday. The game could be on par with the 2018 clash with Dana Holgerson, Will Grier and the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Steve Sarkisian’s team sits in poll position for the second spot in the conference title game. Should Baylor beat Kansas State, Texas could still control its destiny to make the conference championship. The simpler path involves Texas handling its business on Saturday.

The Longhorns will face a new challenge this season in conference play. They face a TCU team that is both well coached and presents matchup problems of their own for Texas.

Sonny Dykes’ coaching staff is seemingly doing everything right so far this season. Let’s examine what will decide this game.

Looking at how No. 18 Texas can attack and defeat No. 4 TCU

Stop Quentin Johnston. Maximize Bijan Robinson.

The Texas Longhorns need a win to control its destiny heading into their Top 25 matchup with the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday. Put simply, it’s not going to be easy.

The No. 4 Frogs will make the trip from Fort Worth to Austin looking to wreck the Longhorns’ Big 12 championship hopes and improve to 10-0 on the season. Their best player could return to action for their biggest game of the season as well.

Quentin Johnston is expected to be back when his team faces the Longhorns on Saturday. Although he didn’t practice today, Texas would be wise to game plan for the Horned Frogs’ matchup problem.

Steve Sarkisian’s team will need to play its best game of the season to beat Sonny Dykes and TCU. Let’s look at how the Horns might attack the Frogs.

Texas vs TCU Game Preview, Big 12 Tournament

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorns were able to get the Horned Frogs twice.

The first time was a 73-50 win with the defense locking down TCU from three, and the second win was by 11 even though the D gave up a whole lot of easy points and the offense couldn’t make a thing from the outside.

TCU wins games on the boards and with its defense, and the Texas defense is better and the team was able to win on the glass in both games – it was +16 in the first game and +4 in the second victory.

Put 70 up on TCU, beat TCU.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why TCU Will Win

TCU is built for tournament play.

It’s got the perfect mix of defensive ability, toughness on the boards, and free throw shooting – not for the year, but over the last few games – to survive.

Texas doesn’t have the type of offense that’s going to crank up the three and make this any sort of a firefight, but it’s No. 1 in the Big 12 in scoring margin because of its great D. Again, that fits what TCU does.

As long as the Horned Frogs can take over on the boards early on, in an every-possession-is-gold game like this, rebounding margin will matter. Yeah, Texas got the job in both games, but that’s a total anomaly considering the way TCU plays.

Conference Tournament Game Previews, Predictions

Texas vs TCU: What’s Going To Happen

Can Texas pull the threezie on TCU? That’s so, so hard to do, but the defense is stronger for a game like this.

Points are going to be at a premium – the TCU offensive rebounding advantage won’t come into play as much as it needs to.

Yes, TCU has been great on the free throw line over the last few games, but Texas will be +4 there. That will matter.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Texas vs TCU Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

The Horned Frog defense has to take over right away.

There might not be a whole lot of scoring punch or consistency, but the defense has a way of slowing things down to its pace and then stuffing teams from the outside.

Texas is on a bit of a slide losing two of its last three games and needing overtime to get by Oklahoma. Its offense isn’t going off – it couldn’t hit a thing against the Texas Tech D – and it’s getting hammered way too hard on the boards.

TCU is solid on the offensive glass, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Texas Will Win

TCU gets a whole lot of offensive rebounds because there’s a whole lot of misses.

The offense struggles to get to 70 points when it’s not owning the free throw line. It needs to attack the rim and hope for a whole lot of chances on the line.

Texas won 73-50 in the first meeting because TCU couldn’t do anything from three and hit just 12-of-21 chances on the free throw line.

One good Texas offensive burst at home should be enough to end this.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Can TCU generate any semblance of a scoring burst?

It’s a decent road team because its defense travels, but it’s too mediocre on the line and too bad from three to keep up after Texas gets out to a first half lead.

Texas vs TCU Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The offense has figured something out.

The 40-21 loss to Arkansas in Week 2 was a dud, but the Longhorns moved away from Hudson Card at quarterback to Casey Thompson, and all of a sudden it’s all blowing up.

Cranking up 620 yards in a 58-0 Rice was cool – but that was against Rice. Coming up with over 300 yards both rushing and passing in a 70-35 win over Texas Tech – and it could’ve been a whole lot worse –  was the eye-opener.

The offense is ultra-efficient, there aren’t a ton of mistakes – the penalties and turnovers are kept to a minimum – and TCU doesn’t have the doesn’t have the pass rush to bust all of this up.

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why TCU Will Win

Max Duggan.

The TCU junior quarterback threw for 231 yards and ran for two scores in last year’s 33-31 win over Texas. As a freshman, he threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns, and he once again ran for over 70 yards with a score.

He might not be the most accurate passer, but he’s been decent so far with over 200 yards in each of the first three games with seven touchdowns and two picks. Now it’s his job to continue being the Longhorn whisperer.

The Texas offense might be sensational, but the defense is struggling a bit. Arkansas was able to run wild, Louisiana and Texas Tech threw without too much of a problem, and TCU should be able to move the chains with a slew of third down conversions.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Forget Oklahoma, TCU has been the big problem for Texas with six wins in the last seven years.

This Horned Frog D doesn’t have its normal stuff. SMU ran wild in a win last week, Cal threw too well in the previous game, and Texas is about to do both.

It’s Texas – its ability to biff games like this might transcend coaching eras – but Steve Sarkisian appears to have everything rolling at the right time.

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Will Win

Texas needs this.

It’s fine for the big tournament no matter what, but a loss to a mediocre TCU team would be a problem for seeding … maybe. There’s no reason to take a chance.

The Longhorns have been terrific over the last few games on the road hitting half of its shots and nailing just about everything from three and the free throw line. Get the offense going in any way, and that’s it – TCU doesn’t have the offense to keep up, failing to get to 70 in five of its last six games.

Why TCU Will Win

TCU really needs this.

At 12-12 it’s not going to the NCAA Tournament unless it starts to look impressive in his and makes a deep run in the Big 12 tournament. Even then, forget about it without a Big 12 Championship, but it starts here.

Yeah, Texas has been great on the road lately, but this is the fourth straight game away from Austin with the last home date over two weeks ago. TCU might not have the offense, but it has enough of a defense to keep this interesting if it can keep the up-and-down outside shooting Longhorns from going off.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas won 70-55 back in mid-February, and it’ll be the same sort of a blueprint with the offense doing just fine on the inside and on the move, and with TCU not having enough offense to take advantage of its opportunities.

Texas (12-5) vs TCU (11-7) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why TCU Will Win

It’s a stretch to assume TCU has turned its season around, but after a rough stretch of losses it’s 2-0 in February. It’s not like the shooting has improved all that much, but it’s been fantastic on the boards and it’s been able to come up with the key late shot and free throws to get by.

Texas is on the flip side. It’s been able to win the two free-space games against Kansas State, but that’s it since taking down West Virginia six games ago.

The Longhorns have been wildly inconsistent from the field, but …

Why Texas Will Win

They’re good enough from three to bomb their way back into the game if needed. Yeah, the Longhorns have struggled lately, but three of the four losses were close and could’ve gone either way, and the other was against Baylor.

TCU doesn’t force a lot of mistakes and isn’t enough of a bother to keep the Texas shooters down for too long, and it’s not good enough from the line to come through late.

Keep TCU off the offensive glass, and all will be fine.

What’s Going To Happen

This has been a very, very streaky TCU team, but it’s having a rough time on the road over the last few weeks.

Texas should be okay from three and should hover around the 50% mark from the field to make this – potentially – a kickstart to the finishing kick.

Texas (2-0) vs TCU (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Will Win

There are a whole lot of issues with Texas after the semi-miraculous comeback overtime win over Texas Tech, but Sam Ehlinger has been brilliant.

He threw an interception, but he’s hitting 71% of his throws for 688 yards and ten touchdowns with 81 rushing yards so far. He’s spreading the ball around well, and as he showed against the Red Raiders, having a veteran leader in tough games means everything.

TCU didn’t give up a ton of passing yards in the 37-34 loss to Iowa State, but Brock Purdy was sharp, hitting 18-of-23 passes. Ehlinger should be just fine, but it’ll be the running game that takes over.

The Horned Frog defensive front is okay, but it gave up a 75-yard run to Breece Hall as part of a 213-yard day on the ground by the Cyclones. Texas has hit the 200-yard rushing mark in each of the first two games.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why TCU Will Win

Max Duggan was terrific coming off his health scare this offseason.

TCU head coach Gary Patterson said he was going to rotate quarterbacks for the Iowa State game, and Matthew Downing was okay. Duggan was great, completing 16-of-19 passes for 241 yards and three scores with a pick.

Duggan was brilliant in last year’s 37-27 win over the Longhorns, hitting 70% of his passes for 273 yards and three scores with 72 rushing yards and a score.

The change to Duggan was too late – TCU was down 16-7 going into the second half – but the offense started to work.

The Horned Frog defense really is stronger than it looked against the Cyclones, but the team has to clean up the problems overall in the first game. There were too many penalties, two turnovers, and too many empty trips. Gary Patterson teams usually fix the glitches.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t assume the TCU that lost to Iowa State to be the same TCU that shows up to DKR, but on the other side, don’t assume Texas to be as flaky as it was against Texas Tech.

Expect a shootout, expect a whole lot of big plays from the quarterbacks, and watch out for Ehlinger to pull the team out of the fire for a second straight week to overcome a strong performance from the Horned Frogs.
