Studs and duds from No. 24 Texas’ win over No. 13 Kansas State

Bijan Robinson delivered a Heisman-level performance.

No. 24 Texas keeps its Big 12 title hopes alive with a huge road victory over No. 13 Kansas State.

The Longhorns held on to a second-half lead for a change, recovering a late Adrian Martinez fumble to hold on 34-27.

Bijan Robinson ran wild to pace Texas’ offense. He finished with 209 rushing yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. The Heisman hopeful continues to prove himself as one of the best players in the nation.

Quinn Ewers enjoyed a bounce-back performance in the win. Despite missing a few deep shots, he found Xavier Worthy for two scores in the first half. Most importantly Ewers did not turn the ball over for the Horns.

Texas survived two costly fumbles by forcing two turnovers of their own. Keandre Coburn’s forced fumble on Kansas State’s final drive sealed the deal.

The victory gives Texas control over its own destiny in the Big 12 title race. It also marks the first ranked win of the season for Steve Sarkisian.

Here is a look at the studs and duds from Texas’ massive win over Kansas State.

Texas secures best win of Steve Sarkisian’s tenure over K-State, 34-27

It’s hard to knit pick a 7-point win over No. 13 Kansas State on the road.

Texas won a nail-biter on Saturday night. It took some luck, as we anticipated.

Before the game, I hinted that luck could be on the way for the Longhorns because of their 3-8 record in one-score games under Steve Sarkisian. Albeit, it wasn’t only luck that won the game.

Texas made its own luck early. The Longhorns scored the game winning touchdown in the first half to lead, 31-10. Sarkisian’s team would not need another score to win.

The Longhorns did allow Kansas State to get back into the game. Undoubtedly much will be made of the Wildcat comeback. Nevertheless, Texas found a way to close it out and secure a road win over No. 13 Kansas State, 34-27.

For perspective, let’s put context on what the Longhorns accomplished in Manhattan, Kansas.

Texas will take on Kansas State at 6:00 p.m. CT on FS1 with Jason Benetti and Brock Huard on the call. Huard’s diagnoses of Texas have been on point for the most part. His commentary will revolve around whether or not the Longhorns’ most valuable players emerge in big situations.

Bijan Robinson is not among players who need a bounce back game. The Doak Walker finalist has consistently performed for the Longhorns this season. Even so, multiple offensive players will need to improve for Texas to secure a win against the Wildcats.

Let’s look at a few players who could produce bounce back or breakout performances.

Will Texas be aggressive or play it safe defensively this week?

The primary objective must be stopping Deuce Vaughn.

The Texas Longhorns defense will have its hands full when they face the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday. Coming off a dominant 48-0 win, Chris Klieman’s team should have the Longhorns’ full attention.

Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense will be asked to slow down the K-State attack. To do so, they will need to slow running back Deuce Vaughn.

Vaughn’s ability is well documented. Last week he ran for 158 yards on 22 carries. The short speedster is adept at making plays as a rusher and receiver.

Regardless of the method taken by the Texas defense, stopping the elite talent figures to be the primary objective for the unit. The only question is, will Texas make Adrian Martinez or Will Howard beat them through the air or concede the run?

Saturday’s game is a huge opportunity for Kwiatkowski and his defensive staff. With a strong performance, the defense could help lift the team back into the Big 12 championship race.
