Bold predictions for the Texas vs. Texas Tech game

Texas and Texas Tech open conference play at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN this Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders meet for what could be their final game in Lubbock for a long time. The matchup is significant this year because of what both teams have already accomplished through the first three weeks.

Both teams are 2-1 and have played well in against good competition. Texas fell by one point to Alabama and beat reigning Conference-USA champion UTSA, 41-20. Texas Tech defeated a ranked Houston team in overtime and played a competitive game on the road against NC State last week.

This upcoming game is significant for both teams’ chances to compete in a wide open Big 12. It will be the first matchup for each team in conference play.

Let’s look at a few potential surprises for this week’s game.

Texas HC Steve Sarkisian gives Quinn Ewers update and more

Quinn Ewers will suit up with the team on Saturday.

The story of the week for Texas is whether or not starting quarterback Quinn Ewers will play this weekend.

For a week or more, some have hinted that Ewers could return much earlier than expected. It appears that could happen on Saturday.

On Thursday, Steve Sarkisian stated Ewers would suit up for the trip to Lubbock in Week 4. That doesn’t necessarily mean he will in fact start the game, but there’s a growing sense of confidence as the Texas Tech game approaches.

Certainly, there is little benefit to suiting up a player who can’t play. Using Ewers as a decoy doesn’t make much sense either. It seems like Sarkisian will give Ewers a shot to play on Saturday if the signal caller is up to the task.

Sarkisian discussed that and other topics during his time with the media. Here’s a glimpse at some of what Sarkisian had to say.

Five interesting facts ahead of Texas vs. Texas Tech in Week 4

Texas Tech has not beaten Texas at home since 2008.

No. 22 Texas is preparing to face Texas Tech in Lubbock for their first road game of the season in Week 4.

The Red Raiders will certainly provide a rowdy environment for the Longhorns, as this could potentially be the last meeting between the two programs before Texas joins the SEC.

Each team enters the matchup with a 2-1 record. Texas fell to No. 1 Alabama by one point in Week 2, while Texas Tech suffered a loss to No. 16 NC State last week.

Texas Tech has not beaten Texas at home since 2008, the infamous Michael Crabtree game where the No. 1 ranked Longhorns lost 39-33. Here’s a look at five interesting facts ahead of the upcoming matchup between the two programs.

Remembering when Texas stole Texas Tech’s football coach in 1987

Chris Beard isn’t the only coach Texas has stolen from Texas Tech.

David McWilliams coached for both the Longhorns and the Red Raiders in the 1980s. He lasted all of one year at Texas Tech before Texas stole their football coach.

To be fair, McWilliams was always a Longhorn. Prior to taking the head coaching job in Lubbock, McWilliams graduated from the University of Texas before serving as the Longhorns’ defensive coordinator.

As we have seen with Chris Beard, Tech fans don’t see returning to an alma mater as a good excuse for leaving their school.

In 1986, McWilliams led Texas Tech to a surprise 7-5 season in his first year at Texas Tech. Included in those seven wins was a victory over his alma mater, the Texas Longhorns. Tech won the game 31-23, catapulting McWilliams to one of the better jobs in the country.

McWilliams would go on to coach at Texas from 1987 to 1991. His time with the two schools is just one of many aspects that have shaped the in-state rivalry.

On Saturday, the two teams will convene for perhaps their final meeting in Lubbock at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
