The new transfer additions make this spring game all the more enticing.
Texas fans are counting down the days until they are able to see Longhorn football again, and the closest thing to a real game is just a couple weeks away.
The annual Orange-White spring game at Texas will take place on April 23, and it will have many fans across the country tuned in to see if Steve Sarkisian and his new additions to the team look better in comparison to the last time we saw them.
When Texas took the field for the final time in 2021, they had finally ended what was a historically long six-game losing streak. Many fans were already throwing around the question whether Sarkisian was the right man for the job.
Sarkisian addressed his critics this offseason, putting an emphasis on a roster overhaul, which included toxic players leaving and adding new talented players that would buy into the culture. The Longhorns added over 30 new scholarship players whether it be from the high school ranks or the transfer portal.
Although there are enticing position battles all over the field for Texas this spring, it is fair to assume that most are excited about one transfer in particular in former Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers. He was the main reason Texas made 247Sports’ best spring games of 2022 list.
Two words: Quinn Ewers. Texas fans — and likely the entire nation — have an opportunity to see the most hyped transfer addition in the modern era don the Burnt Orange for the first time. Sure, he made a couple brief appearances at Ohio State, but Ewers will likely play at least a whole quarter for the Longhorns. It will be interesting to see how he jells with Texas’ elite skill talent, highlighted by Heisman candidate running back Bijan Robinson and stalwart wideout duo Jordan Whittington and Xavier Worthy. Add top transfer additions in wide receiver Isaiah Neyor (Wyoming) and Jahleel Billingsley (Alabama) into the mix and Texas has a must-see spring game, if only for the offense.
Sarkisian and his staff absolutely reloaded on offense, and are hoping that the experience on defense will help improve what was one of the worst defenses in the country in 2021.
While many are excited to see the early enrollees and transfers during the spring game, the Longhorns will still have the rest of their 2022 recruiting class joining in the fall which theoretically means they will only get better. They also could have some last minute transfer portal additions to add more experience and depth.
It seems that things are beginning to fall into place for Sarkisian’s Texas team as they look to have a bounce back season.
