The loss to Georgia has been costly for the Texas Longhorns who tumble down the US LBM Coaches Poll two spots.

After losing a mistake filled SEC Championship Game, the Texas Longhorns are paying the price in the polls. UT slipped two spots to No. 4 in the newest US LBM Coaches Poll.

Should Texas turn to Arch Manning in College Football Playoff to fix inept offense?

With Texas Longhorns offense looking as bad as it has all season, should Steve Sarkisian start Arch Manning over Quinn Ewers in the playoff?

There has never been a point this season when I think Texas coach Steve Sarkisian seriously thought about elevating Arch Manning into the permanent starting QB role. But is now the time?

When Quinn Ewers was injured against UTSA, Manning accounted for five touchdowns in relief. Manning threw for four TDs and had an electrifying 65-yard TD run.

Manning showed off a better arm than Ewers during his time as the starting QB and many national analysts and fans alike wondered if Sark should just make the switch. But when Ewers rushed back from injury, Sark when right back to him in the Oklahoma game.

Even when Sark went to Manning in the second quarter of the first Georgia game, I don’t believe he had any notion about making a permanent switch. But Ewers has struggled since coming back from his oblique injury. He has spurts where he looks like he did against Michigan this season and Alabama in 2023.

But this version of Ewers doesn’t look confident. Sometimes his passes look really weak, like he’s lost arm strength. Sark points to Ewers experience in tough moments and big situations. But since the Washington game in last year’s college football playoff, he’s mostly failed in those key spots.

Does Sark not trust Manning? Does he put too much faith in Ewers’ three seasons of experience? Is Ewers still the best choice for a playoff run

The answer to these questions over the next few days will surely keep Sarkisian up at night. It’s starting to look like this team might not have enough on offense to win the national championship. The offense looks as broken and is having trouble finishing off drives against decent defenses.

It seems clear 2024 is Ewers last year at Texas. There have been rumors of entering the draft or transferring to another school next season. My guess is, Ewers will enter the NFL Draft if his grade is high enough. If not, he’ll transfer and make room for Manning.

Sark has been loyal to Ewers. But it is getting harder and harder to defend Ewers as the starting QB. He doesn’t look capable of winning a close game late. If the offense is broken and Manning is the future, switching QBs might be the only way to win it all this year, instead of waiting until next year.

Even if Texas falls flat in the playoff with Manning at the helm, he’ll be more ready for the first game of 2025, which happens to be at Ohio State.

How to watch CFP Selection Sunday for Texas Football fans: Time, TV channel, streaming

Check out the details of how to watch the Selection Sunday show that will announce the full CFP Bracket.

The Texas Longhorns’ narrow 22-19 overtime loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game has significant implications for their postseason trajectory. This defeat, their second to Georgia this season, positions Texas outside the top four in the College Football Playoff rankings, thus forfeiting a first-round bye. Consequently, the Longhorns are expected to host a first-round playoff game at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, with their seeding—either No. 5 or No. 6—pending the final CFP rankings.

Despite the setback, Texas’ advancement to the SEC Championship Game in their inaugural conference season is a historic accomplishment. Notably, the Longhorns achieved this milestone ahead of Texas A&M, which has been part of the SEC since 2012.

Looking ahead, the Longhorns must regroup and prepare for their upcoming playoff matchup. Hosting a game in Austin provides a valuable opportunity to leverage home-field advantage as they aim to progress further in the postseason. Addressing the issues that led to their recent defeats, particularly turnovers and defensive lapses, will be crucial for Texas to enhance their performance in the playoffs.

The official rankings will be released on Sunday evening.

Texas Longhorns football CFP rankings projection

It’s pretty clear the Longhorns are in. Either No. 5 or No. 6 spot seems to be the likely landing spot for the Longhorns. USA TODAY Sports projected where the Longhorns might land in two scenarios if they lost to Georgia. One scenario has the Longhorns hosting Arizona state, then moving onto SMU in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. While the second scenario has Texas matching up with Arizona State again, but playing Clemson instead in Atlanta. Both scenarios assume losses by Texas and Oregon. If only Texas loses, they are projected to earn the No. 5 seed in the playoff bracket.

What seed will Texas get in College Football Playoff after SEC Championship loss?

Where do the Texas Longhorns after Saturday’s loss in the SEC Championship?

The Texas Longhorns’ 22–19 overtime loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game on December 7, 2024, has significant implications for their College Football Playoff seeding. The defeat prevents Texas from securing a first-round bye, which is awarded to the top four highest-ranked conference champions.

With this loss, Texas is expected to drop in the CFP rankings, potentially placing them around the No. 5 or No. 6 spots. Teams ranked in these positions do not receive a bye and must compete in the first round of the playoff. The official CFP rankings, which will confirm Texas’s exact seeding and matchup, are scheduled to be released Sunday at 11 AM CT.

USA TODAY Sports has outlined two possible outcomes for Championship Saturday, where the Longhorns came up short in an SEC title game. In both scenarios, Texas ends up as the No. 6 seed, hosting a playoff game. But both were coupled with an Oregon loss.

What this means is Texas will probably end up the No. 5 seed, which is the highest seed for a non conference champion.

In the College Football Playoff system, the top four highest-ranked conference champions receive first-round byes, advancing directly to the quarterfinals. The remaining eight teams—comprising the next highest-ranked conference champion and at-large selections—compete in the first round.

This structure emphasizes the importance of conference championships, as only conference champions are eligible for the top four seeds and the accompanying byes. Independent teams, such as Notre Dame, are ineligible for these top four seeds since they are not affiliated with any conference.

The selection committee determines the rankings and seedings based on various criteria, including team performance, strength of schedule, and other relevant factors. The final rankings are released tomorrow.

Backup QB leads Georgia Bulldogs to SEC Championship win over Texas Longhorns

Texas fell short of a rematch win against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Texas fell short in the SEC Championship game to the Georgia Bulldogs in an overtime thriller. 22-19 was the final from Atlanta, as now the only two losses on the UT season have come at the hands of the Bulldogs.

Georgia claims the SEC Championship and the first-round bye. Trevor Etienne sealed the victory for the Bulldogs, scurrying into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown run in the first overtime.

The Longhorns opened the scoring midway through the first quarter. Bert Auburn nailed a 41-yard field goal with 5:17 remaining, capping a methodical 9-play, 64-yard drive that chewed up over four minutes of clock. Texas took an early 3-0 lead and maintained their edge into the second quarter.

Auburn was back in action early in the second quarter, extending the Longhorns’ lead to 6-0 with a 42-yard field goal at the 10:22 mark. The impressive 14-play, 56-yard drive spanned over seven minutes.

Georgia responded with a scoring drive of their own, as kicker Peyton Woodring drilled a 44-yard field goal with 6:32 remaining in the half, narrowing the score to 6-3.

Texas dominated the first half statically. Just before halftime, Georgia quarterback, Carson Beck, went down holding his arm. He got up and walked off the field. Kirby Smart said that staff would look at him during the break.

Steve Sarkisian was visibly frustrated at halftime, making his displeasure with the officiating crew known. The Texas head coach addressed what he perceived as biased calls, stating, “Hopefully they call them [Georgia] for a holding one of these times.” Sarkisian didn’t elaborate further, but the pointed comment spoke volumes, reflecting the tension on the field.

From here on, it was straight to Gunner Stockton, Georgia’s backup quarterback, a redshirt sophomore from Tiger, GA. The Bulldogs seized momentum in the third quarter. Running back Trevor Etienne broke free for a 10-yard touchdown run, and Woodring added the extra point to give Georgia a 10-6 lead at the 10:27 mark. The drive, which covered 75 yards in 10 plays, gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game.

Georgia added to their advantage in the closing moments of the quarter when Woodring converted a 24-yard field goal with 16 seconds left, capping a 61-yard drive and extending the lead to 13-6.

Texas refused to go quietly into the fourth quarter. Less than two minutes into the final frame, quarterback Quinn Ewers connected with wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. for a stunning 41-yard touchdown pass. Auburn’s extra point tied the game at 13-13 with 13:54 remaining.

However, the Longhorns faced a near disaster as Georgia mounted a clock-draining drive, maintaining possession from 13:54 to 4:32. Despite several tense moments, including fumbles that gave the Bulldogs additional opportunities, Texas’ defense held firm but could not keep Georgia from pushing the lead to 16-13 with a field goal.

With just under four minutes remaining, Texas aimed to mount a comeback. However, quarterback Quinn Ewers struggled under pressure, failing to convert on three consecutive drives. On a critical 3rd-and-17 following a sack, Ewers threw an interception to Georgia’s Daylen Everette, giving the Bulldogs possession with 3:35 left on the clock.

Georgia’s subsequent drive was cut short when quarterback Gunner Stockton threw his first interception of the game, picked off by Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron. This turnover gave the Longhorns another opportunity with limited time remaining. As Texas advanced downfield, a deep pass from Ewers drew a defensive pass interference call on Georgia’s Daylen Everette, positioning the Longhorns favorably as the clock wound down.

Texas Burt Auburn kicked from 37-yards out, leveling the game out at 16 a piece. Georgia drained the clock after the return and to overtime the game went. In overtime, Georgia won the toss, deferred to Texas. Arch Manning was at the helm for the first play, rushing on his first drive for five. Ewers was swapped for the second play. From there, the Georgia defense held Texas to a kick from Burt Auburn from 32-yards.

Georgia’s redshirt sophomore backup quarterback, Gunner Stockton, stepped up for the Bulldogs, leading them to a championship win that dashed Texas’ hopes for a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff (CFP). Selection Sunday is slated for tomorrow, and the Longhorns are projected to secure a 5th or 6th seed in the rankings.

Returning to Austin with potentially one more game on the horizon, Texas remains a strong contender for the National Championship for the second consecutive year. Texas, has some homework to do, and, I’m sure they’ll do just that.

Georgia’s SEC title victory puts Penn State in position for possible No. 1 seed

Penn State is playing for its first no. 1 ranking since 1997 after Georgia knocked off Texas in the SEC Championship Game.

As Georgia celebrated an overtime victory in the SEC championship game in Atlanta over the Texas Longhorns, it became clear that Penn State had a clearer path to do something it has not done in over two decades. A Penn State victory over Oregon would likely move no. 3 Penn State to the top of the college football rankings for the first time since 1997.

Pulling that feat off will be a difficult task, of course. Oregon is the no. 1 team in the rankings and is the last undefeated team left standing in the FBS. Oregon is a slight favorite in the Big Ten championship game. But with Texas losing to Georgia, it is now essentially guaranteed that the Big Ten champion will be the top-ranked team and own the no. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff.

Texas came into its first SEC championship game ranked no. 2 in the rankings. A win by Texas coupled with a Penn State victory over Oregon would have made for some debate over who should be no. 1. But Texas will now be locked out of a bye in the first round of the College Football Playoff and will await their seeding from the selection committee on Sunday. Texas could be the no. 5 seed, a spot that was being projected by Penn State heading into the conference championship games.

Earlier in the day, Boise State and Arizona State clinched their spots in the playoff as they will be among the five highest-ranked conference champions. Georgia is now officially locked in as well and will get one of the byes and top-two seeds.

Next up? The Big Ten champion and ACC champion. Game on!

Georgia knocks off Texas in overtime for SEC Championship

Georgia and Texas went to overtime in the SEC Championship Game. Talk about drama

The SEC Championship Game packed enough drama into it for an entire season. And it went to overtime.

Georgia won the SEC Championship in incredible fashion on Saturday in Atlanta, defeating Texas 22-19 in overtime.

Quarterback Carson Beck came off the sidelines for one play in overtime after backup Gunner Stockton had to leave because his helmet had been knocked off on a run.

With his right arm dangling, Beck handed off to Trevor Etienne. The running back scored from four yards and Georgia had the SEC title and a bye in the CFP.

Stockton came into the game to start the second half after Beck was injured on the final play of the first half. The injury kept him on the sidelines until he was forced in after Stockton’s helmet was knocked off in OT.

Brett Auburn had kicked a field goal as Texas took a 19-16 lead on its OT possession.

Both teams are 11-2 with both of Texas’ losses coming to Georgia.

The game went to overtime when Auburn kicked a 37-yard field goal with 18 seconds left in regulation.

Auburn, who was 2-of-4 in the game before the kick, was true with the critical attempt.

The 47-yard drive had been set up by an interception of Stockton.

The redshirt sophomore was pressed into service because Beck injured his throwing elbow on the final play of the first half.

Georgia had taken a 16-13 lead on a field goal with 4:32 left after Texas had tied the game on a 41-yard pass from Quinn Ewers to DeAndre Moore Jr. with 13:54 left in the fourth quarter.

Both Texas and  Georgia are in the College Football Playoff 12-team tournament. The win  gave the SEC Champion a bye in the first round of the tourney.

Will Georgia get the Florida State playoff treatment? Carson Beck’s injury has college fans wondering

Rules are rules….right?

The College Football Playoff selection committee is on the verge of the one scenario it desperately hoped to avoid: A top team losing its starting quarterback in the final week of the season.

No. 5 Georgia saw QB Carson Beck suffer an apparent injury to his throwing arm on the final play of the first half of the SEC championship Saturday and was ruled out for the remainder of the game against No. 2 Texas.

Fans around the sport remember what happened to Florida State last year all too well. After FSU went undefeated in the regular season, the team was left out of the then-four team College Football Playoff in favor of an Alabama squad at full strength.

The snub unleashed unbridled fury from Tallahassee, a million or so hot takes and nearly destroyed the ACC. It appears we may be headed for a redux in 2024.

We’ll find out what the committee makes of the injury on Sunday during the official playoff field unveiling, but the precedent set by last year’s decision already looms large — as college fans have been quick to point out.

The good news for the committee is that it’s a lot easier to make this call with 12 teams in the field than four.
