Texas Longhorns vs Oklahoma Sooners: 3 reasons Texas could lose

The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners face a must-win game scenario on Saturday. We break down three reasons why the Longhorns could lose

[jwplayer Aw1rsWXu-er0jUifI]

There isn’t a bigger game this season for the Texas Longhorns or Oklahoma Sooners at this point in the season. Texas is coming off a demoralizing loss to the Texas Christian Horned Frogs in which they had a shot late to win the game but ultimately couldn’t do enough to win the game. On the flip side Oklahoma is coming off back-to-back losses in which they were leading late but the defense couldn’t make a play to win the game.

When it comes to these two teams, their defenses have been liabilities for them. It is the unstoppable force meets the movable object. The movable object being either defense through three games of the season. So it might come down to just which offense makes more plays or who has the ball last.

We have the three reasons that the Longhorns could beat Oklahoma on Saturday but allow me to play devil’s advocate. We entertain three reasons that Texas does in fact not win this game and sends the fanbase into a frenzy.

Red River Rivalry: Three reasons Texas could beat Oklahoma

Texas has the opportunity to grow its series lead on Oklahoma on Saturday. Here are three ways UT can win Saturday’s Red River Shootout.

The beauty of Texas-Oklahoma is the competitiveness of the rivalry. Over the past decade, seven of the matchups have been decided by one score or less. It truly is a game that either team can win, no matter the circumstances.

For the Longhorns, Saturday’s Red River Shootout is nearly a must-win. After dropping last week’s home matchup to TCU, Texas cannot afford to start 1-2 in the Big 12. Especially with Oklahoma already at two conference losses. A win would significantly boost their odds at a Big 12 championship.

Even when the Sooners are down, they pose as a threat. As long as Lincoln Riley is calling plays in Norman, Oklahoma’s offense will be nearly unstoppable. Texas has been able to manage it once and will face that challenge again.

Despite being a three-point underdog, Texas has the opportunity to grow its series lead on Oklahoma on Saturday. Here are three ways the Longhorns win Saturday’s Red River Shootout.

To say this is an important Red River Shootout would be an understatement. Here are who the experts are picking for Saturday’s TX-OU game:

The power of the Big 12 is at stake this week with Texas and Oklahoma squaring off against each other in Dallas.

The Longhorns are coming off an embarrassing loss to TCU at home and a nervy 2-1 record. The Sooners are in worse shape, dropping their opening two conference matchups to Kansas State and Iowa State.

Both teams had Big 12 championship hopes that can be swiped away with a loss on Saturday. Baylor, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State will all be looking to take advantage of the two powerhouses having down years.

Behind Enemy Lines: Five Texas-Oklahoma questions with SoonersWire

For this week’s behind the enemy lines, we asked our friends at SoonersWire to answer five questions before Saturday’s matchup.

For both Texas and Oklahoma, Red River week is the most important of the year. Leaving the State Fair of Texas will fried food and the Golden Hat after a battle in the Cotton Bowl is expected from both schools.

This year’s matchup has even more spice to it, with both schools in dire need of a win to get their seasons turned around. The Longhorns is coming off a loss to TCU at home, while the Sooners are 0-2 in the Big 12 for the first time in the Lincoln Riley era.

For this week’s behind the enemy lines, we asked our friends at SoonersWire to answer five questions before Saturday’s matchup. Thank you to site editor Kegan Reneau for answering questions and for giving us an Oklahoma perspective.

Can we expect any improvements in the run game this week?

That’s the question of all questions. The reality is probably not. Which puts a lot of pressure on Spencer Rattler. The interior of the offensive line has just not lived up to expectations.

How big of a difference will the quarterback age make?

In a normal OU-Texas year? A lot. In a COVID-19 OU-Texas year? Very little. I thought Spencer Rattler displayed his mental toughness and ability to handle adversity in Ames, Iowa, last week. He checked off that box heading into this game.

Is this more of a must-win for Texas or Oklahoma?

Texas. Not even a question. If Tom Herman can’t beat Oklahoma this year and win the Big 12, when will he? The Sooners are in a great position for the future. Texas’ future is hanging in the balance.

Which defense do you trust more when called upon?

NEITHER. GOD NO.

Three reasons Oklahoma wins?

Tom Herman screws this up. there is a clear path to Texas winning this football game and it’s scrapping Herman-ball and embracing the Air Raid. Oklahoma can’t sustain against it defensively.

Spencer Rattler plays like the best quarterback in the conference. It can happen. The kid is special.

Oklahoma gets after Sam Ehlinger again. It is wild to think that this defense had nine sacks a year ago in this game. The Sooners’ pass rush has actually been really good the last two games despite the low sack count.

Texas remains field goal underdog to Oklahoma per BetMGM

Texas will travel to Dallas for the annual Red River Shootout with its season on the line. Here are the opening betting lines per BetMGM.

Texas will travel to Dallas for the annual Red River Shootout with its season on the line. The Longhorns lost at home to TCU on Saturday and will need to beat Oklahoma to keep the season afloat.

Oddly enough, the Sooners are in a similar position. Lincoln Riley dropped his opening two conference games for the first time in his career. This Texas-Oklahoma matchup will be unfamiliar territory for both teams.

Losing last season’s matchup, Tom Herman will be looking to get his second rivalry win in four seasons. If he does, the Longhorns’ will still have an opportunity to push towards their goal of a Big 12 championship.

Opening lines for the game per BetMGM

Line: Oklahoma (-2.5)

Over/Under: 72.5

After the TCU loss, Texas is 1-2 against the spread this season. The Longhorns have failed to cover in both Big 12 matchups after being favored by 17.5 against Texas Tech and 12.5 against TCU.

Red River Shootout: Ronnie Perkins to play against Texas

Lincoln Riley has been in the process of getting DE Ronnie Perkins eligible and has pulled it off just in time for the Red River Shootout.

Before last season’s blowout loss to LSU in the College Football Playoff, Oklahoma’s impact defensive end Ronnie Perkins was suspended after failing a drug test. He has missed the Sooners’ first two games of the season and will not play on Saturday against Iowa State.

Head coach Lincoln Riley has been in the process of getting Perkins eligible and has pulled it off just in time for the Red River Shootout.

According to Jason Kersey of The Athletic, Perkins will be with the team in Ames on Saturday night and “should be ready for Texas next week.” Despite traveling with Oklahoma, the defensive end is in sweats and will be on the sidelines.

Perkins has recorded 75 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks in two seasons for the Sooners. Widely considered Oklahoma’s best defensive player, Alex Grinch’s pass rush is getting an instant boost.

Against the Longhorns last season, Perkins recorded five tackles and one sack.

Prior to Saturday night’s matchup against Iowa State, Oklahoma recorded five sacks, four of which came against FCS opponent Missouri State. Perkins will change the dynamic of the Sooners’ defensive line.

Texas will play in the annual Red River Shootout against Oklahoma in Dallas on Oct. 10. Left tackle Samuel Cosmi and right tackle Christian Jones’ job just became a whole lot harder.
