What Texas head coach Tom Herman said about Kansas

On Monday during his press conference that went viral due to comments about Urban Meyer and recruiting, Tom Herman spoke about Kansas.

On Monday Texas head coach Tom Herman spoke with the media. When he wasn’t going on rants about unnamed sources or media hurting his recruiting efforts, he did speak about the upcoming game.

With the rising number of games being cancelled due to COVID-19, the first question of the day revolved around how confident Herman is about being able to finish the season. The Longhorns are one of the few teams that haven’t dealt with a major outbreak. With their policies in place, they have been a model team.

“I know it sounds like coach speak,” Herman stated “but I don’t think about those things. We are so focused on Kansas right now, our team, what we need to do and where we need to improve to put up a good showing against Kansas.” Herman went on to say that “they will focus on Kansas and they will let those decisions be handled by people who are not coaches.”

One of the questions ahead of Kansas is are the Longhorns looking to get younger players snaps. The Jayhawks are 0-7 this year and have lost their last three games by an average of 41.9 points per game. That is a mindset that the team could have. Herman didn’t give you the idea that the team or staff has that mentality.

“I think the concern is that one, playing on the road is difficult.” He continued, “you obviously look at a record and if you are not mature enough, can be swayed by that record. I think that we have a mature group of guys that have gotten tremendously better. Both individually and as a team throughout the season. [And] three out of the last four years we needed a last second field goal to beat them. We needed to recover two onside kicks the last time we were in Lawrence.”

“Recent history has shown that we are going to need to bring our ‘A’ game to win the game.” Tom Herman clearly doesn’t want to give any inclination that they are looking past Kansas. Despite the fact that they are expected to handle a undermanned Jayhawks football team, he wants to keep their level of focus high. They need to steer clear of a trap game that could derail their hopes of playing in the Big 12 Championship.

As far as playing younger players, the head coach mentioned letting that play itself out. They don’t want to plan on getting younger guys snaps because given the nature of this series as of late. they are playing their starters the entire game. Winning the game should be the No. 1 priority as Herman mentioned.

During the presser Herman mentioned a “four-game stretch.” Which tells you this team has every intention of playing for the Big 12 title game. If they take care of business then they will be playing for the title if it falls their way. Their biggest test remaining will come next Friday against Iowa State at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Over the last three games against the Jayhawks, Texas margin of victory has only been eight points. When asked about why, Herman stated “it doesn’t matter.” He would go into further explanation, “a 2-point loss against TCU counts the same as a 7-point win at Oklahoma State.  We got the job done which is first and foremost.”

“As to why? I think human nature is very difficult to defeat. You know 18-22 year old kids are going to look at records, they are going to look at point spreads. They are going to look articles, they are going to look at this and that. It is our job to make sure that we bring them down to earth.” He went on to say they have to remind them that they are the University of Texas and 11 different schools named them their rivals. Going against Kansas they will give them their “best shot.”

That speaks to what Kansas head coach Les Miles said on Monday when he stated that “Texas will get you focused.” The Longhorns are a team in the national spotlight week in and week out. Teams will want to take advantage of being in that spotlight and want to be the team that brought you down when the world is watching.

What Kansas head coach Les Miles said ahead of Texas game

Kansas Jayhawks head coach Les Miles talks about the upcoming matchup with the Texas Longhorns. Also mentions why it is good to play them.

Both the Kansas Jayhawks and the Texas Longhorns will be coming off their final bye week of the season. Albeit both are on opposite sides of the spectrum. The Jayhawks are looking for some positives to take into the offseason while the Longhorns have everything to play for. Their Big 12 Championship opportunity still hangs in the balance.

Kansas head coach Les Miles met with the media on Monday to discuss the happenings of the bye week. Plus they get ready for the match up with the Texas Longhorns. Freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels has been dealing with a left ankle injury that has him questionable for the game against Texas. Miles refused to name a starter at this point in the week. He did mention that he was able to practice during the bye week, but he didn’t.

With everything going on with shutdowns and COVID-19, Miles talked about focusing on the task at hand. He said the good news is that you are Texas. Texas will get you focused. Lawrence Arnold the WR from DeSoto, Texas has been ruled out for the game against Texas according to Les Miles.

Miles mentioned how they had spirited  practice in the bye week ahead of the week of prep for Texas. You can hear the entire press conference from Les Miles below.

Texas Longhorns vs. Kansas: QB Tale of the Tape

Which quarterback has the edge in the QB tale of the tape for this game? Sam Ehlinger on one side versus the QB duo of Kansas.

On Saturday in Lawrence, the Texas Longhorns and Kansas Jayhawks begin their final stretch of games for the 2020 college football season. Texas is 5-2 (4-2) while Kansas is 0-7 (0-6) this year. The Jayhawks are just looking to build any momentum they can in the final three games.

The Horns, on the other hand, are still in the hunt for the Big 12 Championship game. They can’t afford a slip during the next three games. They should beat Kansas handily, but they should have last year as well. They escaped with a two-point win.

The quarterbacks will face the ninth- and 10th-ranked passing defenses in the conference. However, the Longhorns actually have the worst passing defense. Texas allows 298.7 passing yards per game while Kansas allows 275.2 yards per game. If a team wants to throw the ball, these are the two defenses your offensive coordinator wants to see on Saturday. Can either QB take advantage?

The Quarterback Tale of the Tape

Quarterback breakdown as runners

Ehlinger vs Daniels Kendrick
90 Att 69 21
323 Yards 40 -32
3.6 YPA 0.6 -1.5
7 TDs 3 0

Despite the fact Sam Ehlinger is averaging the worst yards per attempt since his freshman season, he is more than capable of getting after the Jayhawks defense. Ehlinger hasn’t run at the same clip of previous seasons, but against the 10th-ranked rush defense, he just might have a record day.

Over their last three games, Kansas is surrendering 295.3 yards and 2.3 passing touchdowns per game. The Jayhawks have been outscored 169-45 during that stretch. That breaks down to an average score margin of 56.3-15.

Edge: Sam Ehlinger by a wide margin

Texas Longhorns vs Kansas: Early look at statistical matchup

We are taking an early look at the Texas Longhorns and Kansas Jayhawks matchup. How do they matchup on the field?

One week from Saturday the Texas Longhorns will travel to Lawrence, Kansas to take on the Jayhawks. The Longhorns are 5-2 (4-2) while Kansas sits at 0-7 (0-6), not exactly a thrilling matchup. With some of the injuries that Texas is dealing with including quarterback Sam Ehlinger and Joseph Ossai, this could be just what the doctor ordered. The Longhorns could build an early lead and get the starters out relatively early.

Over their last three games, the Jayhawks defense is giving up a blistering 56.3 points per game. All three opponents (Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma) put up 50+ points. The Longhorns are 15th in FBS in scoring at 40.4 points per game. However, over their last three games that number is just 28.3 points per game after facing the top two defenses in the conference. Texas offense could get healthy once again.

Statistical Breakdown of the Matchup

So how does these two teams stack up? Is it as big of a mismatch as it seems? To answer that question we look at their statistical breakdown and Big 12 Conference rankings.

When Kansas has the ball

Stats Kansas Offense Texas Defense
PPG 15.1 (10th) 29.7 (8th)
YPG 264.4 (10th) 401.0 (7th)
Pass 151.4 (10th) 283.1 (9th)
Rushing 113.0 (9th) 117.9 (4th)
Turnovers 12 (10th) 12 (1st)
Points per play 0.201 (10th) 0.364 (4th)

When Texas has the ball

Stats Texas Offense Kansas Defense
PPG 40.4 (2nd) 48.4 (10th)
YPG 437.2 (3rd) 468.6 (9th)
Pass 269.9 (4th) 254.9 (8th)
Rush 167.3 (4th) 213.7 (10th)
Turnovers 8 (4th) 6 (7th)
Points per play 0.525 (4th) 0.670 (10th)

On paper this game has all the makings of a blowout waiting to happen. Last year in Austin, it took a last second field goal by Cameron Dicker to survive the Jayhawks 50-48. This time around they have a young quarterback and their best weapon in Pooka Williams has opted out of the season. We could see another bloodbath for Kansas as they try to avoid giving up a fourth-straight 50+ point game to their opposition.
