Texas Baseball: Longhorns sweep Kansas State

The Texas Longhorns baseball team swept the Kansas State Wildcats in a three-game series over the weekend.

This past weekend was defined by streaks. The Texas Longhorns baseball team (25-8) won all three of their series games against the Kansas State Wildcats, extending their win streak to eight games. Ivan Melendez has now hit a home run in six consecutive games.

The Longhorns won in dominant fashion each of the three games, winning by seven or more runs for a total of 37 runs for the series.

Texas has been on fire since their 0-3 start to the season and has been scoring runs at will and playing great defense, which was all on display against the Wildcats as they only gave up 25 hits for nine runs during the weekend.

Texas is now 10-2 in Big 12 play on the season and currently have a three game lead atop the conference as the Longhorns hit the midway point of the season, with another 12 conference games left on the schedule.

Texas will host a two-game series against the Nevada Wolfpack on Tuesday. First, let’s recap the Kansas State series on the next page.

Texas Baseball: Longhorns dominate Stephen F. Austin

The Texas Longhorns baseball team won for the the second consecutive night, beating the SFA Lumberjacks in a one-game series.

The Texas Longhorns (22-8) were riding a four-game win streak heading into Wednesday’s matchup with Stephen F. Austin. Texas would win the game by a score of 9-1.

The Longhorns scored early and often. Eight of the teams points were scored in the first four innings and Texas didn’t allow a run until the top of the eighth.

Ivan Melendez continued his hard-hitting ways hitting two of three at-bats, brining in four RBI’s including a three-run home run in the fourth.

Also in the fourth inning, Zach Zubia hit a one-run home run, his second hit of the game.

Pete Hansen (3-1) got the win for Texas, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing only two hits and no runs with three strikeouts. Sam Walbridge also got three strikeouts pitching in relief for only 1.0 innings.

With the game already out of reach, DJ Petrinsky came in for a one-run home run to put the finishing touch on another blowout victory for Texas.

The Longhorns will host Kansas State in a three-game series starting on Friday.

The Texas Longhorns (20-8) baseball season took another step forward over Easter weekend as they swept the Kansas Jayhawks in a three-game series, making it the teams third Big 12 series win of the season thus far.

The Longhorns needed this after a two-game losing streak to both of their biggest rivals, Oklahoma and Texas A&M in back-to-back games.

Not only did Texas win the Kansas series handily, they never once trailed at any point during all three games, only giving up a combined four runs over the weekend.

Texas has five more Big 12 series remaining on the schedule and their next is a three-game series vs. the Kansas State Wildcats. First, the Longhorns will need to play a pair of one-game series back-to-back on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They’ll take on the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders, who they beat 12-1 earlier this season, followed by the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Wednesday. Both games can be seen on The Longhorn Network.

Texas Baseball: Series review of Oklahoma

The overview of the three-game series between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Texas Longhorns (17-7) hosted a three-game series against archrival Oklahoma Sooners over the weekend. It was nothing short of dramatic and explosive, but ultimately Texas won the series overall after defeating Oklahoma on both Friday and Saturday.

It took extra innings in game one, plus an exciting finish to decide it. Game two was much more one-sided in the Longhorns favor and the team was able to snag an important conference series win.

Texas is starting off well in Big 12 play with a 4-2 conference record thus far. Winning a three-game series against the Sooners, who had won eight of their last nine games prior to facing the Longhorns, just adds to an already impressive season for Texas up to this point.

Up next, Texas will travel to College Station to take on their other archrival in the Texas A&M Aggies (17-9) on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.

Texas Baseball: Ty Madden among top pitchers in the nation

Texas Longhorns pitcher Ty Madden jumps in the top three leaders in strikeouts after his performance vs. South Carolina.

The Texas Longhorns won game one of their series last night vs. South Carolina by a score of 4-1.

Texas pitcher Ty Madden, the star of the game, has been on a tear early in this season.

Madden pitched 7.0 innings and only allowed 3 hits in the outing. Even more impressive, was his five strikeout performance, which gives him a total of 30 on the season.

Madden is one of the few pitchers in college baseball with 30 or more strikeouts and after his strong outing last night; he sits tied for third in the country in strikeouts.

Only Justin Campbell (32) from Oklahoma State and Hunter Stanley (31) from Southern Miss have more so far this season.

At this rate, Ty Madden’s MLB draft buzz will continue to rise. He’ll likely be on many All-American ballots and up for the school’s first ever National Pitcher of the Year award.

Madden has only pitched 20.0 innings thus far this season, and is likely to pass 50.0 at the rate he’s going. Don’t be surprised if Madden surpasses 60 strikeouts before the postseason begins.

Texas Baseball: Longhorns defeat Sam Houston State

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns followed their series vs. Houston with a high-scoring defeat over Sam Houston State.

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns (8-5) just got back from their three-game series against Houston to face the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Tuesday. Texas brought the bats with them in a high-scoring affair that ended with a score of 15-9.

Zach Zubia and Ivan Melendez led the team with three hits each. Zubia brought in five runs and Melendez brought in three on the night.

Pete Hansen got the start on the mound pitching 4.0 innings, throwing 73 pitches and getting three strikeouts while allowing two runs on four hits. Texas would use four other pitchers in this game as well — Tanner Witt (2.0 innings), Lucas Gordon (2.0 innings), Drew Shifflet (1.0 innings) and Dawson Merryman (14 pitches, filled/subbed in the fifth).

Texas held a dominating 10-2 lead through five innings before the Bearkats went on a seven-run tear in the top of the sixth to bring the game to within one run. However, the Longhorns never slowed down at the plate. Texas scored five total runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, capitalized by DJ Petrinsky’s double to put the final nail in the coffin.

With another win under their belt, the Longhorns are now 8-2 since going winless at the State Farm College Baseball Showdown to start the season. Now, Texas has another challenge when they host No. 8 South Carolina for a three-game series this weekend. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Longhorn Network.

Texas Baseball: Review of the three-game series vs. Houston

The No. 21 Texas Longhorns (7-5) played a three-game series against the Houston Cougars (7-4) this past weekend, where Texas won two of three contests.

The first two games were split between both schools and were fairly low scoring. The Longhorns won game one by a score of 1-0 behind a stellar performance by Texas pitcher Ty Madden. The Cougars stole game two with a walk-off in extra innings to end the game 3-2. Game three, however, not only gave the Longhorns a series win, but they defeated Houston in dominant fashion 8-2.

In game one, the lone run for Texas came from a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning. The star of the game was pitcher Ty Madden (2-1) who pitched a complete game, giving up only two hits and a career-high 14 strikeouts.

In game two, Houston took an early 1-0 lead run in the bottom of the second, but Texas would rally behind an Austin Todd single and score a run in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The game stayed tied with two runs each, which forced extra innings until Houston’s Tyler Bielamowicz ended the game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th.

With the series tied at 1-1, Texas looked to close out the series strong on Sunday. Unlike the first two contests, game three didn’t come down to the wire as the Longhorns blew out the Cougars.

As a team, the Longhorns had seven hits on 31 at-bats (.226) in game three, highlighted by Trey Faltine who was .500 for the day with 2 RBI’s and a one-run homer in the top of the ninth to put the cherry on top.

Kolby Kubichek (2-1) pitched 6.0 innings on Sunday, allowing only two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.

The Longhorns will host a one-game series against Sam Houston State on Tuesday. They’ll then begin an important three-game series against No. 12 South Carolina on Friday in Austin.

Texas Baseball: Longhorns defeat Houston, win series 2-1

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns beat the Houston Cougars in game three to win the series 2-1.

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns (7-5) finished their three-game series against the Houston Cougars (7-4) on Sunday.

They went into game three with the series tied at one game each, where both games were low-scoring affairs with one point differentials. Texas made sure to end the series on a much different note, winning game three by a score of 8-2 to win the series.

The Longhorns took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Cougars were able to keep them shutout for the next two innings until a three-run fourth inning basically put the game away. Houston was never able to recover.

Trey Faltine had a great game at the plate hitting .500 on four at-bats with two RBI’s. The cherry on top was Faltine’s home run in the ninth inning to put the game away.

Kolby Kubichek (2-1) got the win pitching 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with an impressive nine strikeouts (99 pitches).

Texas will have a one-game series against Sam Houston State on Tuesday. The game is live from Austin with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Longhorn Network.

Texas Baseball: Longhorns lose game two, series tied 1-1

The Texas Longhorns lost game two of their three-game series to the Houston Cougars. Series is tied a one game apiece.

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns (6-5) played their second game of their three-game series vs. the Houston Cougars, winning game one last night 1-0. In another close game, it took extra innings but the Cougars took game two 3-2 to tie the series at one game each.

A pair offreshman Longhorns, Douglas Hoddo III and Trey Faltine, stole the show for Texas. Faltine hit two doubles and an RBI, while Hodo batted .400 with two hits for the game.

Texas held the lead for four and a half innings until a Cougars run in the fifth tied the game at two for the remainder until the last at-bat.

The game remained tied at two through 10 innings until Houston’s Tyler Bielamowicz hit the game-winning walk-off home run in the 11th to tie the series.

Tristan Stevens and Aaron Nixon were the highlighted pitchers today, pitching a combined 7.3 innings for nine strikeouts, with Nixon giving up the game-winner.

Tomorrow is game three with the series win on the line. First pitch is 1:30 pm on ESPN+.

Texas Baseball: Ty Madden dominates, Longhorns defeat Houston

The Texas Longhorns won game one of their three-game series vs. the Houston Cougars thanks to a dominate performance from Ty Madden.

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns (6-4) are coming off of a two-game win streak where they blew out Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas State on consecutive nights. The team began its first of a three-game series against the Houston Cougars (6-3) on Friday night.

In what turned into a fantastic pitching matchup, the Longhorns won game one in a low scoring affair 1-0.

Ty Madden got his second victory of the season in a dominant performance. He pitched a complete game with a career-high 14 strikeouts.

Cougars pitcher Robert Gasser also pitched a good game on the other side. He pitched 7.0 innings, allowing no runs, four hits and five strikeouts.

The lone run in the game came in the top of the eighth inning with bases loaded. Trey Faltine was walked, which advanced Zach Zubia to second, Cam Williams to third, and brought Mike Antico home for the score.

Despite only five hits by the Longhorns, it proved enough to win and take the series lead 1-0.
