Texas Baseball: Five early freshman standouts

The 2021 baseball season is still young, but these Texas Longhorns are making an immediate impact.

It’s still early in the season, but the No. 19 Texas Longhorns (5-4) have plenty of impressive players on the roster including Zach Zubia, Cam Williams and Ty Madden. What’s been even more impressive has been the play of the Texas freshmen at this point.

It’s always key to get solid play from your upperclassmen, but when the young talent is able to step up and contribute it’s encouraging for both the short and long-term future of the program. While some of these young players have contributed as starters, others are making their presence felt in relief.

Since last season was cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19, players were granted an extra year of eligibility, therefore some of the players on this list did appear in the shortened season last year.

Let’s take a look at which young players have been contributing the most up to this point and will likely continue to make their presence felt as the season progresses.

Texas Baseball: Longhorns defeat Texas State by seven runs

The Texas Longhorns beat the Texas State Bobcats in a one-sided victory on Wednesday.

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns (5-4) followed up a blowout win Tuesday night vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with another on Wednesday against the Texas State Bobcats. The Longhorns dominated by a score of 10-3 in San Marcos.

The Longhorns took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning, thanks to a two-run home run from freshman Trey Faltine. Texas never trailed at any point during the game.

Through six innings, the Longhorns only gave up a pair of runs to keep a close 3-2 lead, but were able to keep the game out of reach with a five-run seventh inning that Texas State wasn’t able to recover from.

In addition to Faltine, Zach Zubia had another good outing, batting 2-3 with an RBI and Silas Ardoin went 2-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Palmer Wenzel earned the victory for Texas (2-0 on the season). He threw 45 pitches through 3.2 innings and allowed no hits with one strikeout.

In relief, pitchers Pete Hansen and Jared Southard left big impacts, pitching 2.1 and 1.0 innings respectively. Neither Hansen or Southard allowed a run and each had two strikeouts.

This was the last single-game that Texas will play until the weekend series that begins on Friday in Houston vs. the Cougars. All games will be broadcasted on Longhorn Network.

Texas Baseball: Horns handle Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in blowout win

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns followed their series win vs. BYU in a dominant win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns (4-4) recently concluded a four-game series vs. the BYU Cougars and followed it up with hosting the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders. In what was the most dominant performance from Texas so far this season, the Longhorns won big by a score of 12-1.

Texas only allowed two hits all game long and even went five straight innings before giving up the lone run. At that point, Texas already had 10 runs on 12 hits, led by players such as Mike Antico (a home run while batting .400), Zach Zubia (2 RBI’s while batting .750), Mitchell Daly (3 hits while batting .600) and Trey Faltine (2 RBI’s while batting .333).

Meanwhile, Texas had three different pitchers throw 38 or more pitches: Kolby Kubichek, Justin Eckhart and Dawson Merryman.

Kubichek pitched 3.0 innings, giving up only one hit and one walk with four strikeouts on 38 pitches. Eckhart pitched 2.0 innings and walked three batters, but only gave up one run on 38 pitches. Dawson also only pitched 2.0 innings and walked three batters, but didn’t allow any hits or runs.

Texas will play Wednesday in San Marcos vs. Texas State in preparation for a weekend series in Houston against the Cougars. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm on Longhorn Network.

Texas Baseball: Review of the four-game series vs. BYU

An overview of the No. 19 Texas Longhorns and their four-game series against BYU.

The No. 19 Texas Longhorns (3-4) hosted their four-game series with BYU, winning the series three games to one. After losing all three of their opening games in Dallas last weekend, the team needed a bounce back of some kind.

The series started off with a 3-1 win, capped off by a one-run home run by redshirt junior Cam Williams in the third inning. Williams would make it a habit of going long for the series, hitting two over the fence including seven RBI’s through the four games.

The play of the series goes to Zach Zubia who’s three-run inside-the-park home run led to what would be the biggest blowout of the series in game three. Zubia hit .400 for the series with three RBI’s.

The top pitching performance was by redshirt sophomore Ty Madden, who rebounded from his performance against Mississippi State in his game three start. Madden pitched 7.0 innings allowing only one hit and 11 strikeouts, by far the most dominant performance from any Longhorn in the series.

The only black eye from the Longhorns was in their loss in game four — allowing five runs, all in the top of the sixth inning, which turned out to be the difference maker.

The team led 4-0 through five innings, but gave up the five runs on five hits with two men still on was too much to overcome, as neither team scored from that point on.

The Longhorns next game is against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, followed by a three-game series in Houston vs. the Cougars.

Texas Baseball: Longhorns Lose Game 4, Win Series 3-1

The Texas Longhorns end series vs. BYU, losing game four. Winning the series 3-1.

The Texas Longhorns (3-4) followed their one-sided win against BYU yesterday in game three with a disappointing loss in game four. The BYU Cougars (3-5) finished the series with their only win by a final score of 5-4.

The Longhorns started out strong, going five innings with a shutout lead and up by four runs. However, an active five-run sixth inning for BYU turned out to be too much for the Longhorns to overcome.

Despite solid performances from Douglas Hodo III, who started off the game with a one-run home run in the third, and Cam Williams with a two-run home run in the fifth, it wasn’t enough to overcome a disastrous sixth inning.

BYU knocked in five runs on five hits with two men left on base before the side was retired.

From that point, no more hits were allowed by either team and the strenuous sixth inning is what kept the Longhorns from a series sweep, giving Texas their fourth loss of the season.

The team returns to the diamond on Tuesday with a one-game series against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CST and will be televised on the Longhorn Network.

Texas Baseball: Horns dominate BYU in game 3

The Texas Longhorns baseball team finished their series against BYU with a…

The Longhorns followed a strong win in game two by taking BYU to the woodshed in game three. Texas ended up winning by a score of 11-1, giving the Longhorns (3-3) the series win, with game four scheduled for Saturday.

There were many stars in this game, but the best performance was by far starting pitcher Ty Madden, who only allowed one hit and 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.

On the other side of the mound was BYU’s Cy Nielson, who pitched 4.0 innings while allowing six hits and seven runs on top of only two strikeouts.

It’s also worth noting that Zach Zubia, who went 3-for-4 in game two, was only 1-for-3 for in this contest, but the one hit came in the form of an inside-the-park homerun in the first inning. Ivan Melendez was 2-for-4 and brought in four runs in the game.

Texas will look to end the four game series tomorrow with a full sweep. It will be televised on Longhorn Network at 3 p.m. CST.
