Steve Sarkisian and Mack Brown featured among ESPN’s coaches on the hot seat

The current and former Texas coach both find themselves with their backs against the wall facing pressure to turn their programs around.

Steve Sarkisian and Mack Brown found themselves on a list that coaches surely don’t ever want to be a part of.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg put out a list of coaches from each conference that could be at risk of losing their job should they underperform in 2022. He had two categories for coaches. One being which coaches are on the hot seat, meaning they have a chance to be fired, and the second being someone to keep your eye on.

While both Sarkisian and Brown were included in the “keep your eye on” section, Rittenberg explained why he could see them being at risk. Starting with Brown, Rittenberg expressed concern about his age.

Brown isn’t a candidate to be fired, but at 70, his longevity in coaching will remain a question, especially after a disappointing 2021 season. North Carolina needs to significantly upgrade its defense and replace record-setting quarterback Sam Howell.

When it came to Sarkisian, Rittenberg expressed that it would be a major disappointment should Sarkisian not scrape together a bowl eligible season with all the talent he has.

Sarkisian returns a roster that should at least win seven or eight games, and could turn into a Big 12 contender. Plus, Texas signed ESPN’s No. 4 recruiting class and added quarterback transfer Quinn Ewers, a five-star recruit, from Ohio State. Barring another bowl-less season, Sarkisian should be safe for 2023. Then again, it’s Texas.

Both teams finished below .500 last season, and are looking to turn it around next season. North Carolina and Texas will have some pieces to build upon, but another rough season for either, and they may find themselves on the hot seat.

How former Texas football head coaches performed in their second year

If Sarkisian has less than four losses next season, he’ll surpass the last five head coaches in their second year.

After a disappointing 5-7 record last season, Texas is hoping Steve Sarkisian can right the ship in his second year with the program. Continue reading “How former Texas football head coaches performed in their second year”

Everything Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said after the Louisiana win

Everything Steve Sarkisian said after Week 1 win over Louisiana.

There was as much as anticipation as ever prior to Texas’ Week 1 matchup against Louisiana.

With a new coaching staff and young quarterback taking on the No. 23 team in the nation, the Longhorns were expected to be in a dog fight. The game was not nearly as close as experts predicted, as Texas only trailed the game for about the four minutes it took them to charge down the field and take a 7-3 lead, where they would eventually win 38-18.

It seemed that the offense was experiencing great success due to the play of  Hudson Card, running back Bijan Robinson, and wide receiver Jordan Whittington. In what was a slow first drive for the offense, this trio really turned it up and was making plays for the rest of the game.

The new and improved defense was also very impressive, as they were able to hold Louisiana to 18 points, 76 yards rushing, and sacked the quarterback four times.

For it being his debut game, Steve Sarkisian likely could not have imagined it going any better. There is no better way than to start the season off with a convincing win.

After the game, Sarkisian spoke to the media to answer questions about the team’s performance. Take a look at everything he had to say on the next page.

Report: Texas ex, Brooklyn Nets assistant interviews for head coach job

Texas basketball has an opening at head coach after Shaka Smart left for Marquette. According to ESPN, Royal Ivey interviewed for the job.

For the first time since the 2014-2015 season, someone not named Shaka Smart will be running Texas’ basketball program. Smart accepted the Marquette job on Friday after failing to win an NCAA Tournament win with the Longhorns in six seasons.

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte has immediately started his coaching search, with names such as Texas Tech’s Chris Beard and Oregon’s Dana Altman being thrown around. The third and final name on our possible replacements for Smart, Royal Ivey, reportedly received an interview.

According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, Ivey interviewed for the open head coaching job on Sunday.

While he does not have any head coaching experience, at the NBA or college level, Ivey is a former player and a member of the 2003 Final Four team. He has worked as an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, and now the Brooklyn Nets.

Shelburne is also reporting Ivey’s hiring has the support of the Longhorns’ basketball alumni. Kevin Durant, who is currently with the Brooklyn Nets, is the name that pops out.

While Ivey may not be the attractive hire that Texas fans are looking for, he would have the opportunity to build the program up over time. The backing of some of the Longhorns’ most prominent players would help as well. Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, and D.J. Augustin could all help from a recruiting aspect.

Brooklyn is currently in second place in the Eastern Conference, one game behind the Philadelphia 76ers. If Ivey decides to finish out the season with the Nets, the NBA Finals could end as late as July 22.
