Lions officially hire three new defensive coaches

The Lions officially added 3 new defensive coaches to the den on Wednesday

The Detroit Lions filled out their 2024 coaching staff by hiring three new additions.

Deshea Townsend and Terrell Williams were already known to be joining the team. Townsend takes over as the defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator for the Lions. He spent the last two seasons in those same roles for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Williams was hired back in January, but the move to appoint him as the new defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator is now officially recognized. The longtime DL coach was previously with the Tennessee Titans. He was once Lions GM Brad Holmes’ position coach in the college ranks.

The third hire is one that hadn’t been previously revealed. Jim O’Neil joins the Lions as a defensive assistant. O’Neil has been in the coaching ranks at a number of stops since 2001 and was most recently the defensive coordinator at Northwestern. He’s primarily worked with defensive backs but did spend two seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.

Reports indicate the Lions are adding a new defensive passing game coordinator

Reports indicate the Lions are adding a new defensive passing game coordinator in longtime NFL DB Deshea Townsend

There appears to be another coaching addition to the Detroit Lions defensive staff. Multiple reports indicate the Lions are hiring former Jaguars defensive passing game coordinator Deshea Townsend to the same role in Detroit.

Townsend, 48, spent two years in that role in Jacksonville. The Lions did not have a named passing game coordinator on defense in 2023. Townsend will join defensive run game coordinator Terrell Williams, who was reportedly hired away from the Tennessee Titans during the Senior Bowl week.

Most notable for his 12 seasons playing defensive back with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Townsend has been coaching DBs in the NFL and college since 2011.

There is no word yet on whether the reported move has any impact on current Lions CB coach Dre Bly or defensive backs coach Biran Duker.

The Detroit Lions have made some changes to their strength and conditioning coaching staff in advance of training camp. The Lions hired two new assistant coaches and have parted ways with another assistant.

Gone is former assistant coach Morris Henry, who had been with the Lions since the 2000 NFL season. No official announcement of any dismissal has been made but Henry no longer appears on the team’s official website.

In his place are two new coaches, Emmanuel “EJ” Hibbler and Corey Smith. Both come to Detroit from the college ranks. Smith most recently served as the strength and conditioning AD for Abilene Christian University in Texas.

Hibbler has years of experience working in the field beyond football. He spent some time at Michigan State working with the women’s volleyball team, and he also worked on the Arkansas Razorbacks football staff when Lions CB Jerry Jacobs was on the team.

Former Notre Dame assistant named head coach at MAC program

Great opportunity for a guy that was an excellent position coach with the Irish

It was just a year ago that [autotag]Lance Taylor[/autotag] was still the running backs coach and run game coordinator at Notre Dame.  Shortly after Notre Dame’s bowl loss to Oklahoma last year, Taylor took the offensive coordinator job at Louisville.

Now after just one season calling plays at Louisville he’s got his first head coaching job.  Western Michigan announced Taylor as their head coach on Thrusday morning.  Taylor replaces Tim Lester who went 37-32 in six seasons since replacing P.J. Fleck.

Taylor was at Notre Dame from 2019-2021 but was responsible for helping boost the talent in the the running back room.  Taylor helped develop [autotag]Kyren Williams[/autotag] into one of college football’s most complete running backs in 2020 and 2021 while being largely responsible for winning the recruiting battles for [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] and [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag].

All the best to Taylor in Kalamazoo!

Lions hire J.T. Barrett as an offensive assistant coach

The Lions have hired J.T. Barrett as an offensive assistant coach

The Detroit Lions have added another assistant coach to Dan Campbell’s staff. And this one is another former player fans will instantly recognize.

Former Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett has joined the Lions as an offensive assistant coach. Barrett bounced around several NFL practice squads for a few seasons after leading the Buckeyes program. He recently retired after a stint with the CFL’s Edmonton Elks.

Barrett’s duties with the Lions are not yet specified. With training camp kicking off this week it won’t take long to see where Barrett, 27, fits into Campbell’s staff.

Lions announce new additions to the coaching staff

Detroit introduced three new coaches under Dan Campbell

The Detroit Lions have filled out the coaching staff for the 2022 NFL season. In addition to many prominent returning names underneath head coach Dan Campbell, the Lions added three new members to the staff.

New senior offensive assistant John Morton is an experienced coach who most recently spent the last three seasons in the same role with the Las Vegas Raiders. Morton, not to be confused with former Lions WR Johnny Morton, has over 20 years of NFL coaching experience. He had one season (2017) as the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets. Morton also coached with Campbell in New Orleans in 2016, serving as the Saints wide receivers coach that year.

Morton also played wide receiver in the NFL Europe and CFL after graduating from Western Michigan back in 1993. He will work with offensive skill position players.

Wayne Blair is the new defensive quality control coach, but he’s a familiar face in Allen Park. Blair coached under the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship program for the Lions in 2021.

The third new coach is one previously announced. Assistant defensive line coach Cameron Davis was known to be with the team. He jumps up from FCS-level Lamar University.

Former Texas coach Charlie Strong hired by Miami to coach linebackers

Charlie Strong is back in the college game.

Charlie Strong is back in the college game after spending this past season in Jacksonville on Urban Meyer’s staff.

Now that the Meyer in NFL experiment has officially failed, Strong joins new Miami head coach Mario Cristobal’s staff as the Canes linebackers coach.

Strong brings both head coaching experience and Florida recruiting ties to the Miami coaching staff. He has been the head man at Louisville, Texas and USF. Strong also helped Florida win two national championships as the Gator’s defensive coordinator during his tenure in Gainesville.

Getting a coach with the resume Strong has to coach linebackers is a major win for Cristobal. Miami also hired Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis to lead the offense. Gattis won the 2021 Broyles Award as the best assistant in college football.

Strong put the icing on the cake for Cristobal’s star-studded coaching staff in Miami.

Lions promote TE coach Ben Johnson as the new offensive coordinator

The Detroit Lions hire TE coach Ben Johnson as the team’s new offensive coordinator

Dan Campbell didn’t have to look too far to find his new offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. The head coach tapped the man who helped author the impressive in-season turnaround in 2021, hiring Ben Johnson as Detroit’s new coordinator.

Johnson had been the team’s tight ends coach, but he took on a much bigger role following the midseason demotion of former OC, Anthony Lynn. While Campbell assumed the playcalling, Johnson stepped up with more involvement in the game planning and passing game coordination once Lynn stepped back to focus more on the running game.

He passed his test while serving as the offensive coordinator for the Lions staff while coaching the American roster in the Senior Bowl. The team did interview two other undisclosed candidates for the position, though Johnson was seen as an overwhelming favorite ever since the end of the season.

The 35-year-old Johnson has risen through the ranks since joining the Miami Dolphins as an offensive assistant in 2012. He served as the TE coach for Miami when Campbell became the interim head coach of the Dolphins in 2015. He played quarterback in college and has also worked as a QB coach and WR coach in his NFL tenures.

Poll: How would you grade the Doug Pederson hire for Jacksonville?

After a lengthy search with many twists and turns, the Jaguars actually came away with a very solid hire in Pederson.

After a seemingly endless 49-day search, the Jacksonville Jaguars finally have a head coach. Late on Thursday night, the team announced the hiring of former Philadelphia Eagles head coach and Super Bowl LII champion Doug Pederson to replace Urban Meyer.

Pederson coached in Philly from 2016 until he was fired after the 2020 season, winning a championship in Year 2 at the helm in 2017. In Pederson, the Jags get an experienced coach with a lot of bona fides regarding his tutelage of the quarterback position.

Quarterback Carson Wentz saw a major second-year jump to being an MVP caliber player under Pederson, and the Jaguars are hoping for a similar turnaround for quarterback Trevor Lawrence after a rough rookie season.

Pederson is known as a players’ coach, and he could prove to be a very good hire in Jacksonville. But it’s hard to talk about this move without addressing the elephant in the room: The search was an absolute disaster.

When the Jags fired Meyer, Pederson was the first candidate they interviewed nearly 50 days ago. He was just brought back in earlier this week for a second interview after the Jags hit a snag with their apparent first choice, Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. Per reports, that snag was general manager Trent Baalke, who Leftwich wanted to be replaced with Arizona vice president of pro scouting Adrian Wilson.

Considering the Jaguars moved on from Leftwich, that seems to be a strong indication that Baalke will return. However, the Jags may be looking to bring in Pederson and former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman, who interviewed for a front-office position rumored to be above Baalke, as a package.

Regardless, don’t let the mess of a search distract you from the fact that when it was all said and done, the Jags ended up with a very strong candidate in Pederson. While there was a lot to like about Leftwich, Pederson (or even Jim Caldwell) were more qualified when considering head coaching experience, and may have been the better candidates all along.

If I had to grade this hire for the Jaguars, I’d probably give it somewhere in the high-B to low-A range. It wasn’t necessarily the most exciting option, but the Jags bring in a coach with a Super Bowl and a track record of developing quarterbacks. Given how dire things looked just a few days ago, they could have done a lot worse than that.

But we want to hear from the fans. How would you grade the Pederson hire? Let us know in the poll below.
