DJ Campbell is still listed ahead of Cole Hutson at right guard, although there is an “or” between the two.

Interesting takeaways from Texas’ initial depth chart against Rice

Texas’ depth chart reveals what the coaches are looking for stylistically in 2023.

The Texas Longhorns have released their first depth chart for the 2023 season. There are a handful of surprises although the main characters are about as expected.

Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers leads the offense with a loaded and fortified offensive line and wide receiver room. As expected, Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell and Jordan Whittington are listed as starters with Ja’Tavion Sanders at tight end. Former five-star offensive lineman DJ Campbell is set to make his first start for the team in his second season in Austin.

Defensively there are reasonable personnel decisions with many of the expected starters where they should be slated. Albeit, we will note one glaring decision on the depth chart.

Let’s look at major takeaways from the Longhorns’ first depth chart of the 2023 season.

Steve Sarkisian names DJ Campbell starting right guard against Rice

The former five-star is getting the start in Texas’ season opener.

We have gotten to the point with Texas football where there is so much depth across the offensive line that a player who started all season in 2022 has now lost his spot to a former five-star. Continue reading “Steve Sarkisian names DJ Campbell starting right guard against Rice”

Texas Longhorns depth chart projection ahead of fall camp

This Texas team is as deep as they come.

We are finally past the period of college football programs sitting and waiting for something to happen. Fall camp is set to start for many schools around the country this week.

The Longhorns will kick off fall camp on Wednesday, August 2.

We’re nearly 30 days away from Texas taking the field for their opening matchup against Rice. While the Longhorns return a ton of experience for the 2023 season, which is why many expect them to contend, there will be some key position battles to watch out for in fall camp.

Here is my prediction as to what the depth chart will look like heading into fall camp for the 2023 season.

Texas Football: Steve Sarkisian releases depth chart ahead of season opener

A few interesting takeaways from the UL Monroe depth chart.

Texas and Steve Sarkisian have released a depth chart ahead of the season opener against Louisiana Monroe.

Sarkisian noted previously that he’d like to keep the two-deep depth charts fairly private and close to the chest this season.

There are several interesting takeaways from the one released on Sept. 3. It’s now official that Ja’Tavion Sanders and Cole Hutson secured their starting roles at tight end and right guard.

In terms of the wide receivers, Casey Cain may be listed higher than some expected. True freshmen Brenen Thompson and Savion Red should also receive a fair share of playing time.

On the defensive side, true freshman Ethan Burke is listed as the backup JACK and transfer linebacker Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey has secured a starting role.

Here’s a look at the full depth chart for Louisiana Monroe.

An updated look at Texas’ WR depth chart

Steve Sarkisian has concerns about the depth at wide receiver.

Texas’ wide receiver room has the potential to be one of the best position groups on the roster in 2022.

Xavier Worthy is back for year No. 2 after establishing himself as one of the nation’s best pass-catchers in 2021. Worthy snagged 63 passes for 981 yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman.

Finding another playmaker behind Worthy at wide receiver was a point of emphasis for the Texas staff this offseason. The Longhorns landed Wyoming transfer Isaiah Neyor via the portal. Neyor is known for the explosive play, averaging nearly 20 yards per catch with the Cowboys in 2021.

Jordan Whittington’s health may end up being the biggest X-factor for Texas’ wideouts this season. Whittington was having a career season before suffering a broken collarbone against Oklahoma. The Horns offense sputtered during Whittington’s absence last season.

Despite adding Neyor and getting other key players back, Steve Sarkisian is still concerned about the depth on the offensive side of the ball.

The majority of our mid years were on the defensive side of the ball. So I’m monitoring our offense as we go. We don’t have a great deal of depth at wide out. We don’t have a great deal of depth on the offensive line obviously right now, and then really at quarterback and not having Maalik. So that part we’ve just got to monitor now as we go and making sure we’re not just wearing these guys out.

Here is a look at where the Texas wide receiver depth chart stands this spring.
