Texas Longhorns land top pitching prospect in 2026 class

The Colony High School product chose Texas over Texas A&M and Oklahoma State

On Friday afternoon, Longhorns baseball had a reason to celebrate as they landed a commitment from Trey Rangel, the top-ranked pitcher in the 2026 class. The Colony High School product chose Texas over Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. His stock has been on the rise after a stellar 2023-2024 season.

In ten appearances as a Sophomore, Rangel posted a 0.90 ERA. He was able to keep opponents off balance with a unique three-pitch mix that should only improve. His arsenal includes a fastball that tops out at 94 miles per hour, a slider that can reach 81 miles per hour, and a changeup that reaches 83 miles per hour. The Longhorns’ pitching gets a welcome boost with him in the mix.

Although Rangel’s college debut is still months away, excitement is building for the future of Texas baseball. He joins a recruiting class that includes James Jorgensen, Trenton Maybin, and Phinn Waters. After hiring Jim Schlossnagle to replace David Pierce, the Longhorns have been busy on the recruiting trail.

On social media, Rangel did not hide his excitement about being a Longhorn. In a post on his X account, Rangel said, ” 100% committed. I am very thankful for everyone who has helped me get to this point. HOOK EM.”

While the Longhorns will continue to look for talent, Rangel’s addition is a significant win for the program. Over the last week, the Longhorns have gotten three commitments from top 20 prospects in the 2026 class.

Texas baseball to compete in the second annual Las Vegas Classic

Texas announced they will take part in another in-season tournament.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team will take part in the second annual Las Vegas Classic in the 2025 season the school announced via social media. It will be the first year under new head coach Jim Schlossnagle, who Texas hired away from in-state rivals, the Texas A&M Aggies.

After finishing 36-24 this past season with disappointing postseason play, the Texas Longhorns decided to move on from head coach David Pierce after eight years with the program. Athletic director Chris Del Conte’s decision to move off Pierce proved to be a wise one, and the Longhorns were able to make the home run hire of the offseason.

The anticipation for his first year on the Forty Acres is palpable, especially as the Longhorns transition to a loaded SEC.

As Texas gears up for a loaded conference schedule, they will travel West from Feb. 28 to Mar. 2 to compete in the Las Vegas Classic. It will be the second year of the round-robin-styled tournament with the Illinois Fighting Illini, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Washington Huskies.

2024 was the first time this tournament was held with the Pittsburgh Panthers being crowned champions over the California Golden Bears, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Oklahoma Sooners. The Las Vegas Classic will be held at the Las Vegas Aviators stadium, home of the Athletics Triple-A affiliate.

Texas will open the season at Globe Life Field

Year 1 of the Jim Schlossnagle era will get underway in The Shriners Children’s College Showdown at Globe Life Field, the home of the 2023 World Series Champions. They will be joined by the Arizona Wildcats, Clemson Tigers, Louisville Cardinals,  Oklahoma State Cowboys, and Ole Miss Rebels.

Jim Schlossnagle berating a reporter over question about Texas rings hollow now that he’s reportedly taken the job

Jim Schlossnagle seems fine with work-related selfishness when it benefits him.

Apparently, new reported Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle is fine with someone being selfish with their job if it involves him.

News broke on Tuesday that the former Texas A&M coach will reportedly make the jump to the Texas Longhorns as their new baseball coach after his Aggies team lost Game 3 of the College World Series Final on Monday night to Tennessee.

In theory, that’s a logical leap for a coach to make after achieving success at their school. Coaches change jobs all the time, especially after making a deep postseason run like Schlossnagle’s team just has.

However, his berating of a reporter asking him about this very scenario after Monday night’s CWS loss rings especially hollow after he reportedly took the Texas job less than a day later.

In the interaction, Schlossnagle called the reporter’s question “pretty selfish” for it being about the Texas job and said that he left his family to take the Texas A&M job in 2022 after a lengthy stint at TCU.

“I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again, and that hasn’t changed in my mind,” Schlossnagle said in his terse response. “That’s unfair to talk about something like that. … I understand you’ve got to ask the question, but I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job, and I’ve poured every ounce of my soul in this job. And I’ve given this job every single ounce I could possibly give it. So write that.”

He abruptly left the press conference right after he finished his response.

While it was obviously a fair question in the moment, it feels even more appropriate that it was asked now that Schlossnagle has reportedly taken the Texas job he seemed very offended to be asked about on Monday evening.

It was absolutely a sensitive topic for Schlossnagle to discuss in the moment, but he could’ve given a much, much more graceful reply than to call a reporter “selfish” for doing their job.

Former NFL reporter John McClain said it best when he said the sequence of events may well question Schlossnagle’s credibility going forward.

Texas bats go cold as season comes to an end after loss to Louisiana

Not a great way for the season to end. Texas will have some self evaluation to do.

The Texas Longhorns needed a win to force a rematch with the Texas A&M Aggies on Sunday night. It didn’t go their way after the Ragin’ Cajuns were chasing some retribution of their own. Texas dropped the rematch after winning 12-5 on Friday, 10-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The Texas Longhorns southpaw Ace Whitehead was able to keep the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns bats at bay, allowing just two runs to come around to score. Whitehead threw 94 pitches over 6.2 innings allowing seven hits and fanning six batters. The floodgates opened in the top of the eighth.

It was Texas who used a seven-run inning to win the first matchup but it was Louisiana who did it last. The Cajuns scored seven runs, all coming after two outs in the inning. A pair of three-run homers busted the game wide open and that would all but seal the fate of the Longhorns in this NCAA tournament regional.

Reliever Charlie Hurley had his worst outing of the season at the worst time. He pitched just an inning with six earned runs given up on five hits, one wild pitch, and a hit batter. Hurley was responsible for the two runners on base when Chase Lummus came into the game. The lefty gave up the second three-run homer of the inning, this time to Bryan Broussard Jr.

Texas finally scored again in the bottom of the eighth with the game well in doubt for the Longhorns. Rylan Galvan brought Peyton Powell around to score on an RBI single. Pinch hitter Jack O’Dowd reached on a hit down the first base line that was misplayed to load the bases. Freshman Tommy Farmer IV would strikeout on a 3-2 pitch from SBC Pitcher of the Year, LP Langevin.

With the seasons coming to an abrupt end, the Longhorns have some self evaluation to do as they look to 2025 in the SEC.

Texas goes to extra innings, throws away opportunity to beat Aggies

Texas falls in extras, must play in rematch with Louisiana for another shot at the Aggies.

After losing 9-2 in their first meeting this year, the Texas Longhorns took rival Texas A&M to the brink of defeat before faltering late. The Aggies were able to outlast the Horns to pick up the 4-2 win in 11 innings. The Burnt Orange had chances to win the game several times.

The tone of this game was set early by starting pitcher LeBarron Johnson Jr., who would go just five innings. LBJ threw 102 pitches over those five frames allowing just two hits and three walks. He also struck out eight batters in a high-stress environment. One of his two hits was a home run to freshman left fielder Caden Sorrell to tie the game in the fifth inning.

The Texas bats were relatively quiet in the game but it started off hot with leadoff hitter Jared Thomas. He took the first pitch of the game from Ryan Prager and put it in the seats.

The Longhorns would retake the lead in the sixth inning when former Aggie, Kimble Schuessler would take Prager yard again. Schuess gave the Horns the opportunity to steal this game and former rival Texas A&M into an elimination game after the solo shot.

The lead wouldn’t last long as Texas A&M would tie the game on one of two throwing errors from shortstop Jalin Flores. Ryan Montgomery would tie the game up on the hit by Ali Camarillo up the middle fielding by Texas, but the routine play was anything but routine.

It would go to the top of the 11th inning before Texas A&M would finally break through with a pair of runs. The first run came on a Ted Burton single to third base that plated Kaeden Kent. Jace LaViolette would come around on a wild pitch from Lummus.

Texas would go down in order in the bottom of the inning to force a rematch with Louisiana in an elimination game.

Texas took down ULL on Friday night, check out these images of the game.

On Friday night the Texas Longhorns were set to play the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns for the second straight year in NCAA regional play. Last season the Horns were victorious 4-2 in the Coral Gables Regional before playing host Miami twice to move on to the Super Regionals.

That could be the case again as they will play host Texas A&M on Saturday night in this year’s edition.

Before they could focus on their biggest in-state rivals, Texas needed to take care of business against Louisiana. After three innings the Horns offense looked like they were going through the motions before breaking through in the fourth and fifth innings.

Infielder Dee Kennedy put Texas on top of Louisiana with a single that brought in two runs to give them the 3-2 lead. The Longhorns wouldn’t look back in the 12-5 win over the Ragin’ Cajuns. After building the 6-2 lead in the top of fifth, shortstop Jalin Flores put the exclamation point on the game with his third grand slam of the year.

The Longhorns will get the chance at retribution on Saturday night when they face off with the Aggies. Texas lost 9-2 to A&M back in March at the Disch. Turnabout could be fair play for the Horns. Just a preview of what is to come then they join the SEC in the 2024-25 calendar year.

Before Saturday’s game, here are the best images of Friday night’s win.

Despite early exit, Texas projected as No. 2 seed in NCAA Regional projections

Are we on our way to a showdown with Texas A&M once the NCAA Regionals get underway?

The Texas Longhorns didn’t have quite the end to the Big 12 tournament that they might have expected in Arlington. Texas fell to Texas Tech in their opening round matchup and were eliminated by the Cincinnati Bearcats soon after.

Despite not getting beyond the second round of the tourney, everything is still on the table for the Horns. They finished the regular season at 35-22 (20-10 Big 12) in their final season in the conference. All eyes now shift to where they will land in the NCAA Regionals. One projection has Texas facing off with an old rival.

According to D1 Baseball, the Texas Longhorns would join a field of four schools in the College Station Regional.

  1. Texas A&M
  2. Texas
  3. Lamar
  4. Niagara

The Longhorns would have an opportunity to stick it to the long-time in-state rivals for a chance to advance to the Super Regionals. The Aggies and Longhorns met on the diamond back in March at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. It didn’t go the way of the Horns. However, if this projection holds true, perhaps Texas can return the favor and end the Aggies 2024 run to the College World Series abruptly.
