Nation’s No. 1-ranked linebacker decommits from Texas A&M; USC is in the hunt

The decommitment of linebacker Anthony Hill from Texas A&M presumably puts #USC and Lincoln Riley in play for the 5-star prospect.

If you regularly read Trojans Wire, first of all: Thank you. Second, if you read our site regularly, you would know that we mentioned the distinct possibility that Lincoln Riley and USC can fatten up on a likely parade of Texas A&M transfers.

Texas A&M lost to Florida this past weekend to fall to 3-6. The Aggies are unlikely to make a bowl game, which means that freshmen on the team (and other classes as well) won’t have to attend bowl practice sessions in December. This certainly makes it easier for them to transfer out of the program sooner rather than later.

Now, however, we have a non-transfer situation in recruiting. A high-profile linebacker just decommitted from Texas A&M.

We’ll fill you in on the details:

Texas A&M hosting top prospect Walter Nolen during Alabama game

Texas A&M’s Saturday against Alabama is even more important than a normal matchup against the Crimson Tide would be: The Aggies are hosting the top prospect in the nation.

Texas A&M is pulling out the big guns in its recruitment of top prospect Walter Nolen.

The Powell (Tenn.) High School defensive lineman, ranked the No. 1 recruit in the 2022 class on the 247Sports Composite, is in College Station for the Aggies’ matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Nolen listed Texas A&M in his top three in August along with Georgia and Tennessee. From some reports, including from On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons, the Aggies are the favorite.

“Based on the info I’m getting right now, the Aggies are likely the school everyone else is chasing,” Simmons said.

Nolen tweeted “Let’s go #Gigem this week” on Thursday ahead of the tip.

Through six games, Nolen has 42 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss and four sacks this season, according to MaxPreps.

Texas A&M is hoping the 6-foot-4, 325-point big will bring his dominance to their university.

But this weekend may be high-risk, high-reward — as electric as the atmosphere will be in the game against Alabama, the Crimson Tide has been several levels above every team except Georgia. Can the Aggies play them well enough to impress Nolen and show him the potential of the team moving forward?

It’s as big a weekend as Texas A&M football will have this season, for multiple reasons.

Notre Dame Football Offers ‘22 OLB Jaishawn Barham

Jaishawn Barham of DeMatha Catholic in Maryland announced a scholarship offer.

Early on Monday we learned that Notre Dame had offered a scholarship to 2022 outside linebacker Gabe Powers of Ohio, which we discussed on FIW.

As it turns out, Powers wasn’t the only outside linebacker to receive an offer from Brian Kelly and company on Monday as Jaishawn Barham of DeMatha Catholic in Maryland announced a scholarship offer.

Barham is listed a little thicker than Powers but not quite as tall, coming in at 6-3, 230 pounds per 247Sports.

Notre Dame is the 15th scholarship offer Barham has received as the Irish join Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Virginia, Virginia Tech and a few others to offer.

Barham is the eleventh player Notre Dame has offered a scholarship to in the 2022 recruiting class.
