Game Recap – Baseball: No. 10 Texas A&M vs No 7. Tennessee (SEC Tournament)

Troy Wansing is him! The Southpaw put together a near-perfect game as Texas A&M fended off Tennessee 3-0 in the SEC Tournament.

As the kids these days say, Texas A&M pitcher Troy Wansing is indeed “him!” The No. 10 Aggies baseball team defeated No. 7 Tennessee 3-0 in the opening of the SEC Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

The Aggies staved off elimination and extended their season for another day, mainly due to the heroics of Wansing, who pitched an absolute gem on the mound. In 8.0 innings of work, the Southpaw put together a near-perfect game, striking out seven batters while allowing just one hit.

The one base runner Wansing surrendered came on a single to right from Volunteer right fielder Christian Scott with one out in the sixth.

Not even a rain delay could thwart an Aggies’ win, as Evan Aschenbeck relieved Wansing in the ninth inning to secure the final three outs, leaving no doubt that the Maroon and White would advance onward.

Alongside Wansing’s gem of a performance, the Aggies’ bats also put together a solid day, putting three runs on the board on five hits and five walks.

Their first run came in the third inning on a fielder’s choice, which allowed shortstop Hunter Haas to score. Austin Bost extended the lead in the fourth inning by bringing Jordan Thompson home on a single. Jace LaViolette continued his hot streak, hitting a solo home run in the sixth to put A&M ahead 3-0 and give them a lead they would never surrender.

The freshman and reigning SEC Player of the Week now has 19 homers on the season.

The Maroon and White now advance to the double-elimination portion of the bracket and face No. 2 seed Arkansas at 1 p.m. C.T. on Wednesday.

Final Score: Aggies 3, Volunteers 0 – W: Wansing, Troy (3-3) L: Seth Halvorsen (2-3) S: Aschenbeck, Evan (3)

Aggie Baseball’s Jace LaViolette named to the SEC All-Freshman Team

Texas A&M freshman phenom Jace LaViolette has been named to the SEC All-Freshman Team after a stellar finish to the 2023 regular season.

What year it’s been for Texas A&M freshman outfielder Jace LaViolette,  who at 6-6 and 230 pounds is built like a future first-round quarterback, but instead is slated to be one of the top prospects in the upcoming 2023 MLB Draft.

Jace LaViolette finished the season with a .306 average in 54 starts with 57 RBIs, 18 home runs, and 16 stolen bases, including a .835 slugging percentage against SEC opponents. After hitting three home runs in the Aggies season finale 15-10 road win against Mississippi State, LaViolette, his 18 home runs set a new freshman single-season home run record. In addition, they broke the record John Byington set in 1987. Due to his incredible performance this season, LaViolette was officially named to the SEC All-Freshman Team on Monday.

After finishing the regular season 32-23 and 14-16 in the SEC, plenty of bright spots, including the stellar play down the stretch from LaViolette, have given Aggie fans so a glimmer of hope going into the SEC Tournament this week, starting with a single elimination game vs. Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon.

For the Aggies to make any postseason run in both the SEC and NCAA Tournament, LaViolette must continue his dominant hitting streak, especially if the pitching continues to underperform. Congratulations, Jace! Gig ‘Em, and BTHO Tennessee!

Texas A&M Baseball now know their SEC Tournament seeding

Texas A&M Baseball has learned their SEC seeding for next week’s conference tournament.

The Texas A&M Baseball program led by second-year head coach Jim Schlossnagle finished the 2023 regular season 32-23 and 14-16 in the SEC, which by most metrics has the Aggies in the NCAA Tournament after notable series wins against Kentucky, Florida, and Auburn.

After winning their final road series vs. Mississippi State two games to one this weekend, including a 15-10 Game three victory, Aggie fans are hopeful that momentum is on their side ahead of next week’s six-day SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama, as Texas A&M is officially a 10-seed, facing the 7-seed Tennessee Volunteers (38-18, 16-14 SEC) in a single elimination game next Tuesday at 12:30 pm CT.

If the Aggies pass the Volunteers, they will face the No. 2 seeded  Arkansas Razorbacks (39-15, 20-10 SEC) in a double-elimination round the following Wednesday. How did Texas A&M fare this season against both opponents? Swept by both squads on the road in two of the more challenging environments in college baseball, so yes, while the task is arduous, memories can be made in Hoover, and a shot at the postseason is all this team is asking for. Gig ‘Em!

Texas A&M Aggies ride balk-off finish to win series over No. 4 Florida Gators

A balk-off and a series winner at the same time?! Texas A&M used a magical finish win the series win over No. 4 ranked Florida on Sunday.

How many times have you witnessed not only a balk-off series-winner but also against one of the top baseball teams in the nation, no less? Your Texas A&M Aggies (28-20, 11-13) baseball team checked those two boxes Sunday afternoon.

After run-ruling the No. 4 Florida Gators (37-12, 15-9) on Saturday to tie the series at one win apiece, the Aggies found themselves tied on Sunday with the score reading 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth. With runners at second and third, Florida starting pitcher Brandon Neely flinched to balk pinch-runner Travis Chestnut home and secure a 3-2 victory in game three of this series.

That makes it two straight wins over the Gators and an official series win over the No. 4 ranked team in the country.

Despite being swept last weekend at the hands of Arkansas, the Maroon and White bounced back emphatically as winners of five of their last six games. Texas A&M is now just two games under .500 in the SEC (11-13) with two baseball weekends left to play.

Will Johnston took the mound for his second season start while pitching for a career-high 4.1 innings. He gave up one run on three hits and two walks, while also striking out five Gators. Trevor Werner scored in the fourth to tie the game 1-1 following Tyler Shelnut’s homer in the inning prior, while Jace LaViolette scored in the sixth to tie the game 2-2 after Wyatt Langford went yard.

Four home games remain for the Aggies as they prepare to welcome UTRGV at Blue Bell Park on Tuesday before Alabama faces off for a weekend series.

Class of 2026 recruit, and Aggie legacy Jorvorskie Lane Jr. commits to Texas A&M baseball

The Aggies baseball team landed its seventh very early commit in Jorvorskie Lane Jr., one of the top outfielders in Texas and an A&M legacy!

The week is off to a hot start for Texas A&M baseball with the team coming off its fourth straight SEC series win, having taken two out of three games over No. 13 Kentucky on the road over the weekend.

Now the Maroon and White are adding icing on the cake with an exciting commitment from a name that should sound familiar to the Aggie faithful.

On Monday, Jorvorskie Lane Jr. committed to the Texas A&M baseball team. Lane Jr. is 5-9, 175 lbs, and is currently a freshman at Fort Worth O.D. Wyatt. The Class of 2026 prospect is an outfielder who also plays middle infielder.

If the last name sounds familiar then we’ll stop you right there and answer with an emphatic yes, the younger Lane is the son of standout running back Jorvorskie Lane, who played in the backfield for the Aggies between 2005-08.

Lane Jr. announced his commitment via Instagram live on PerfectGameUSA’s social media handle, and according to the baseball scouting service, he ranks as the top outfielder in the state of Texas for the class of 2026 with a grade of 9.

He marks the seventh very early commit for the Maroon and White’s baseball team, and he likely won’t be the last.

A big welcome to Aggieland Jorvorskie, although you’re more than familiar with the Maroon and White already! We can’t wait to see you on the diamond, Gig’Em!

Significance of No. 21 Texas’ 5-2 win over Texas A&M on Tuesday

There’s no such thing as a meaningless regular season game between Texas and Texas A&M.

For the 245th time, the No. 21 Texas Longhorns (19-7) defeated the unranked Texas A&M Aggies (15-10) on the baseball diamond. Though some would try to diminish the importance of the game, it bears significant ramifications for both teams.

The win brings Texas to 15 consecutive victories, raising its RPI to No. 15 in the nation. Certainly games against Texas Tech, TCU and Oklahoma State will play a role in where the Longhorns are seeded when tournament play starts. Nevertheless, the win over the Aggies could aid the team in hosting a Region prior to the College World Series in Omaha.

Texas A&M is heading in the opposite direction as losers of four straight games. The Aggies are 1-5 in SEC play with 10 losses early in the season. That’s a dramatic fall for A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle and company after starting the season in the Top 10 and Top 5 in various preseason polls.

The biggest takeaway is that the Longhorns found a way to win a game in a rabid road environment. Texas pitcher Zane Morehouse overcame control issues and obnoxious fans to close out a game that looked to be in danger.

Next up, Texas looks to stay undefeated in conference (3-0) as it travels to face the No. 17 Oklahoma State Cowboys (20-6, 4-2 in conference) in Stillwater on Friday.

Oklahoma Baseball offers Sooners 2024 5-star QB target D.J. Lagway

Providing the two-sport star an opportunity to continue his baseball career at Oklahoma, Skip Johnson offers 2024 5-star QB D.J. Lagway.

Fresh off of a magical run to the College World Series, Skip Johnson and the Oklahoma Sooners are on the recruiting trail looking to bolster their roster in 2024. Looking to continue his playing career on both the gridiron and the diamond, the Sooners are providing that opportunity to 2024 five-star quarterback and OU target [autotag]D.J. Lagway[/autotag].

Lagway received an offer from Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Football Program back in April and now has his baseball offer from Manager Skip Johnson.

Lagway has also received offers to play baseball from Texas A&M and LSU in addition to the who’s who list that has offered him a football scholarship.

Lagway is the No. 4 quarterback in both the 247Sports composite ranking and the On3 consensus rankings.

The Oklahoma Sooners have successfully navigated the two-sport star in the past, most notably with Kyler Murray, who was a top 10 pick in the MLB draft by the Oakland A’s and eventually the No. 1 overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals.

Oklahoma’s looking to pull off the feat with D.J. Lagway who’s a priority quarterback target for the 2024 class.

Skip Johnson, Jimmy Crooks, David Sandlin on Oklahoma’s 5-1 win in the College World Series

What Oklahoma’s Skip Johnson, David Sandlin, and Jimmy Crooks had to say to the media after their 5-1 win over Texas A&M to advance in the CWS.

The Oklahoma Sooners are heading to the College World Series final for the first time in 28 years. The other two times that the Sooners made the final, Oklahoma won the national championship. 3-0 in the CWS, the Sooners now wait for the other semifinal to wrap up.

Arkansas took the first of the semifinal games from Ole Miss, setting up a winner-take-all showdown on Thursday. The winner will join the Sooners on Saturday for game one in the three-game series for the national title.

The Sooners are set up nicely for the final, thanks to David Sandlin’s standout performance. He threw seven innings of one-run ball with a career-high 12 strikeouts.

Jimmy Crooks provided the only offense necessary with a three-run home run with two outs in the first inning. Oklahoma added two more along the way and Trevin Michael pitched two scoreless innings to send the Sooners to the CWS final.

Meeting with the media after the 5-1 win over Texas A&M, Head Coach Skip Johnson, pitcher David Sandlin, and catcher Jimmy Crooks shared their thoughts on the win.

Social Media Reacts to Oklahoma’s 5-1 win over Texas A&M to advance to CWS final

Social Media reacts as the Oklahoma Sooners beat Texas A&M 5-1 to advance to the College World Series.

David Sandlin’s performance was a bounceback for the ages. In game two of the Blacksburg Super Regional, Sandlin lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed five earned runs. He came in for a third of an inning against the Aggies on Friday night in the Sooners’ 13-8 win but didn’t last long before giving way to Trevin Michael.

On a day when the Sooners needed “the Sandman” the most, he showed up ready to dominate and put the Aggies right to sleep by striking out the side in the top of the first inning. He shook off his last two outings to put on a masterpiece, striking out 12 Aggies and throwing seven innings of one-run ball. The only run for Texas A&M, a solo shot to start the sixth inning. Sandlin then retired the next six batters before Michael came in and pitched two innings to finish off Texas A&M.

His effort propelled the Sooners into the College World Series final for the first time in nearly 30 years. It was an outing for the ages for Sandlin who was helped by Jimmy Crooks’ three-run home run in the first inning.

The Oklahoma Sooners are heading to the College World Series final and will face the winner of the other semifinal Arkansas or Ole Miss. But before we enjoy more College World Series baseball, let’s revel in the Sooners 5-1 win with the best reactions from social media.

David Sandlin dazzles, leads Oklahoma to 5-1 win and College World Series final

David Sandlin threw seven innings of one-run ball and struck out 12 Aggies to lead the Oklahoma Sooners to the CWS final for the first time since 1994.

Getting his first start since game two of the Blacksburg Super Regional, David Sandlin was electric in Oklahoma’s 5-1 win over Texas A&M. The redshirt sophomore from Owasso, Okla. threw seven innings and set a new career-high, striking out 12 Aggies.

After Sandlin struck out the side in the top of the first, the Oklahoma Sooners’ bats went to work in the bottom of the first.

With one out, Peyton Graham walked and Blake Robertson followed that up with a single to left. After Tanner Tredway lined out to center field, the Sooners got another big two-out hit from Jimmy Crooks, who took the first offering from Ryan Prager deep to right field for the three-run home run.

With the way Sandlin was pitching, that’s all the run support he would need as he threw five scoreless innings before Dylan Rock’s solo shot to lead off the sixth. After the home run, Sandlin retired the next six Aggies in order before giving way to closer Trevin Michael.

Michael gave the Sooners his trademark two innings to finish off the Aggies, inducing a double play to end the eighth and striking out Brett Minnich to end the game.

Crooks led the way for the Sooners, going 2-for-4 with his home run and three RBIs. John Spikerman continued his strong postseason, collecting another two hits, and Peyton Graham and Robertson each reached base twice.

Oklahoma heads to the College World Series final for the third time in school history and the first time since 1994, which was also the last time they won the national championship.

The Sooners now await the winner of tonight’s matchup between Arkansas and Ole Miss. Ole Miss can advance with a win while the Razorbacks need to win two games to meet the Sooners in the three-game series, which starts on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. CT.
