Larry Warford called up to Pro Bowl, makes 10 Saints in total

The New Orleans Saints now have 10 players listed on the 2020 Pro Bowl roster, with right guard Larry Warford called up as an alternate.

[jwplayer YWZ4iVKH-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints have broken their own team record for the most players selected to the Pro Bowl in a single year, with right guard Larry Warford raising the total to ten. He’s the third Saints player called up for the NFL’s all-star game as an alternate, joining left guard Andrus Peat and tight end Jared Cook, who were both promoted last Saturday.

Five Saints players were named starters on the NFC roster, a group that includes wide receiver Michael Thomas, defensive end Cameron Jordan, cornerback Marshon Lattimore, kick returner Deonte Harris, and kicker Wil Lutz. Additionally, quarterback Drew Brees and left tackle Terron Armstead are listed as backups. Peat, Cook, and Warford will also likely participate as backups.

It’s impressive to see so many Saints players get this kind of recognition; it wasn’t too long ago when only one or two of their number would get to join in. What’s really remarkable is that seven of the ten players started their NFL careers with the Saints, while just three (Warford, Cook, and Brees) were added as free agent signings. This is what homegrown talent looks like it.

Now, that’s not to downplay what the team has accomplished in free agency. Warford was a solid but unspectacular starter with the Detroit Lions; since signing with the Saints in 2017, he’s been selected for the Pro Bowl in all three years that followed. Talk about a home-run hit.

This year’s Pro Bowl will kick off from Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 26 at 2:00 p.m. CT. Tickets are already up for sale, and fans can also tune in on ESPN or ABC. With so many Saints players taking part, this won’t be one to miss.

Demario Davis among four Saints on AP All-Pro first-team

Four New Orleans Saints were recognized on the AP All-Pro first-team, including linebacker Demario Davis and right tackle Ryan Ramczyk.

The New Orleans Saints were well-represented on the Associated Press All-Pro Team, with four players named to the first-team. Wide receiver Michael Thomas was the only unanimous selection, but he was joined by teammates including right tackle Ryan Ramczyk, linebacker Demario Davis, and rookie returns specialist Deonte Harris. Only two Saints players were selected for the second-team: edge rusher Cameron Jordan and special teams ace J.T. Gray. Of the six total Saints to appear on the All-Pro teams, five started their careers in New Orleans, and four were acquired in the last three years.

Thomas is the only player of the group who was a first-team All-Pro in 2018; Ramczyk was named to that year’s second-team, along with other Saints players including Jordan, quarterback Drew Brees, and left tackle Terron Armstead. Davis and Harris are each making their first time appearance.

Brees and Armstead being left off the second-team feels like a pair of serious oversights. While they did each miss time with injuries in 2019, there’s no questioning their level of performance. It’s tough to justify both of them missing the cut. On the other hand, it’s great to see Pro Bowl snubs like Davis and Ramczyk get the recognition they so badly deserve.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson returns to practice on updated Saints-Titans injury report

New Orleans Saints safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson returned to practice on their updated injury report ahead of Week 16 vs. the Tennessee Ttians

[jwplayer lYmfIY4f-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans updated their official injury reports on Thursday ahead of Sunday’s noon kickoff. New Orleans released an estimated initial injury report on Wednesday after going through a low-intensity walkthrough practice, due to the short week that followed their  Monday Night Football game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Several key starters will be worth keeping an eye on throughout the week, and their status during their first regular practice on Thursday is telling. Safety Vonn Bell still did not participate on Thursday, while rookie safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, his backup, participated on a limited basis. His return to the practice field bodes well for his return from a concussion.

Injuries have been piling up along the offensive line. Starting left guard Andrus Peat, now almost a month removed from surgery on his broken arm, was again a limited participant in practice. His partner on the right side, Larry Warford, rested for the second consecutive practice session after last week’s scary knee injury.

Any changes to Wednesday’s practice status are noted in bold text. And as always, a final injury report will be released on Friday denoting each player’s status for the game on Sunday. Here’s what we’ve learned.

The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts published their first injury report ahead of Week 14’s big kickoff on “Monday Night Football.” All eyes are on star Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, while the Saints have a long list of key players battling various ailments — ranging from tight end Jared Cook (concussion) and left tackle Terron Armstead (ankle) to starting linebackers Kiko Alonso (thigh) and A.J. Klein (knee). That’s hardly the position New Orleans would like to be in so close to the playoffs.

Here’s what we learned on Thursday’s injury report. Because the Saints are playing on Monday instead of the usual Sunday, this week’s injury reports will be issued on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday — so check back often for updates. Changes to each subsequent injury report will be denoted with bold text.

Saints nominate Terron Armstead for Walter Payton Man of the Year Award

The New Orleans Saints nominated LT Terron Armstead for the 2019 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, recognizing his talent and character.

[jwplayer biPFTIIn-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints announced Thursday that they named left tackle Terron Armstead their 2019 Man of the Year, nominating him for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. This recognition is reserved for players nominated by their teams after showing exemplary on-field performance and off-field strength of character. Previous Saints nominees include Drew Brees, Cameron Jordan, and Benjamin Watson.

It’s a big honor for the man protecting New Orleans’ blind side. Armstead has battled through a painful high-ankle sprain in recent weeks, missing two games before he was able to gut through the injury in Sunday’s game with the San Francisco 49ers. And his impact is palpable — without Armstead in the lineup, Brees has logged an average time to throw of just 2.49 seconds. But with Armstead protecting him, Brees has been able to hold onto the ball for 2.71 seconds, which means a world of difference.

In addition to his high level of play, Armstead has been a leader in charitable efforts in the New Orleans community. He recently gifted several dozen bicycles to schoolchildren at the DePaul Community Center and has often used his weekly off-day to visit local schools and children’s hospitals. He’s also participated in his teammates’ youth football camps during the offseason, doing his part to support their own efforts at community outreach.

It’s great to see Armstead earn this recognition, and it’s a strong reminder of just how much good work NFL players are doing when they aren’t battling each other during games. The Saints know they have a great leader in Armstead, and he’s someone they clearly value highly within the organization.

The full list of nominees from around the NFL is embedded below, but you can also find it at this link. The award’s winner will be announced during the week leading up to Super Bowl LIV.

Terron Armstead and Manti Te’o active for Saints vs. 49ers

The New Orleans Saints will start Terron Armstead at left tackle against the San Francisco 49ers, leaving him off of their inactive report.

[jwplayer FgrNrsL9-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints will welcome all-star left tackle Terron Armstead back into the lineup during Sunday’s game with the San Francisco 49ers; this comes after he was left off of the Saints inactive report, signalling his return. Armstead had missed the last two games with a high-ankle sprain but is gutting through it to take his spot along the New Orleans offense line.

Four Saints players were ruled out for this kickoff on Friday’s final injury report, including two starting linebackers (Kiko Alonso and A.J. Klein) as well as the player who normally lines up next to Armstead at left guard (Andrus Peat). The Saints will also be without fullback Zach Line again as he continues to recover from a knee injury. Veteran linebacker Manti Te’o will play his first game in a year since being signed off the street on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, San Francisco is getting healthier. They’re adding leading rusher Matt Breida to a loaded running back corps after he missed time with an injury, while starting safety Jaquiski Tartt and backup defensive tackle Julian Taylor were preemptively ruled out. Top defensive tackle Arik Armstead caused a stir when he left a 49ers practice session earlier this week, but that absence was designated as a veteran’s rest day. Expect him to test the Saints’ Armstead and fill-in left guard Nick Easton early and often on Sunday.

Here is the full list of inactive players who will be watching this one from the sidelines:

From the Saints

  • OL Andrus Peat
  • FB Zach Line
  • LB Kiko Alonso
  • LB A.J. Klein
  • CB Patrick Robinson
  • OL Will Clapp
  • FS Saquan Hampton

From the 49ers

  • S Jaquiski Tartt
  • DT Julian Taylor
  • WR Dante Pettis
  • WR Marquise Goodwin
  • QB C.J. Beathard
  • TE Levine Toilolo
  • RB Jeff Wilson

Terron Armstead ruled questionable to play vs. 49ers on final Saints injury report

The New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers published their final injury reports ahead of Week 14’s game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

[jwplayer FgrNrsL9-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers published their final injury report ahead of Sunday’s big noon kickoff, including status updates for several players managing various ailments. Here’s what we learned after each team wrapped up practice on Friday.

For New Orleans, the Saints hope to all-world left tackle Terron Armstead return to the lineup a few weeks removed from a high-ankle sprain. But his practice participation has been limited throughout the week, so he’ll have to test out his ankle during pregame warmups on Sunday before they can reach a final decision. He’s officially listed as questionable to play.

If Armstead can’t go, expect veteran guard Patrick Omameh to again step into the lineup in his place, as he did in last week’s game with the Atlanta Falcons. Undrafted rookie Ethan Greenidge was active for the first time this year but didn’t get on the field thanks to Omameh’s performance in a tough spot. The 49ers boast one of the NFL’s fiercest defensive lines, so it’s anyone’s guess who plays left tackle for most of the day.

Things aren’t trending nearly so favorably on defense, where starting linebackers Kiko Alonso and A.J. Klein were each preemptively ruled out after missing practice throughout the week. The Saints signed former starter Manti Te’o on Tuesday and he could be pressed into action on Sunday against one of the NFL’s best rushing attacks, which isn’t ideal.

Special teamers Craig Robertson and Stephone Anthony are theoretically ahead of Te’o on the depth chart, but the Saints coaching staff saw enough out of their 11 combined snaps against the Falcons last week to call him up as soon as possible. Whoever ends up starting next to Demario Davis on Sunday, they need to be ready.

The Saints also lost backup tight end Jason Vander Laan to injured reserve after he suffered a head injury in Thursday’s practice. They recently waived third-year reserve Dan Arnold, so they’ll be short-handed at tight end on Sunday.

From the Saints

  • LB Kiko Alonso (Thigh) DNP, Out
  • OL Andrus Peat (Forearm) DNP, Out
  • LB A.J. Klein (Knee) DNP, Out

Saints down two starting linebackers on updated Week 14 Saints-49ers injury report

The New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers updated the Week 14 injury report, with Saints linebackers Kiko Alonso and A.J. Klein resting

[jwplayer FgrNrsL9-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers published their second injury report of the week on Thursday ahead of their Week 14 clash. The result of the game could have playoff implications as far as seeding is concerned. Currently the Saints are the No. 1 seed in the NFC, while the 49ers sit in the top Wild Card position at No. 5.

A number of key players for New Orleans were designated as not practicing, or participating in a limited capacity on Wednesday’s initial report. Linebackers Kiko Alonso and A.J. Klein did not participate on Wednesday while offensive lineman Terron Armstead was limited. None of those statuses changed on Thursday’s injury report, but backup offensive lineman Will Clapp and tight end Jason Vander Laan each turned in a limited practice while managing their own injuries.

The final injury report with game status for certain players will be issued on Friday. Daily changes in practice participation are noted in bold text.

Saints re-sign practice squad OL/TE convert Nate Wozniak

The New Orleans Saints re-signed Nate Wozniak, a collegiate tight end they converted to left tackle, to their practice squad on Wednesday.

[jwplayer MZXmVA0r-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints offensive line received some added depth on Wednesday, with Amie Just of Nola.com reporting that the team re-signed offensive lineman Nate Wozniak. Wozniak, the former 6-foot-9 Minnesota Golden Gophers tight end, learned to play left tackle while with the Saints from May 2018 to August 2019. He spent the intervening months with stints on the Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons practice squads, as well as trying out for a handful of teams.

Wozniak clearly has the size and length to play in the NFL, but rehearsed technique has eluded him so far. He never progressed beyond lining up at left tackle with the third-string offensive line while in New Orleans through two offseasons, and probably still needs a lot of work before he’ll be game-ready. The good news is that stepping into a game against NFL pass rushers shouldn’t happen for a while, with several players between him and the starting unit.

Here’s a projection of what the Saints depth chart looks like right now at offensive tackle:

  1. LT Terron Armstead (injured)
  2. RT Ryan Ramczyk
  3. LG/LT Andrus Peat (injured)
  4. LG/LT Patrick Omameh
  5. LT Ethan Greenidge
  6. OL John Leglue (practice squad)
  7. RT Derrick Kelly (practice squad
  8. LT Nate Wozniak

We’re still waiting on news of who left the Saints practice squad to create room for Wozniak, who would be the third offensive lineman on the unit along with Leglue and Kelly, both rookies. So stay tuned for the official NFL transactions wire to update with that information.

Terron Armstead limited, Kiko Alonso DNP on Wednesday’s Saints injury report

The New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers published their first injury report ahead of Week 14, with two Saints linebackers sitting out

[jwplayer MZXmVA0r-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints are short-handed on defense this week, as evidenced by the signing of former Saints middle linebacker Manti Te’o on Tuesday. Now that cornerback Marshon Lattimore, kick return specialist Deonte Harris and wide receiver Tre’Qaun Smith are back from various injuries, it appears to be the defense’s turn to catch the injury bug.

Te’o’s return follows the exit of starting linebackers A.J. Klein (knee) and Kiko Alonso (thigh) from Thanksgiving Day’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, each battling separate injuries. Wednesday’s injury report didn’t shed much light on the severity of either situation, with both players sitting out of practice.

Fullback Zach Line will be worth keeping an eye on as the week progresses considering he missed the last two games against the Falcons and Carolina Panthers. His role in the offense is often overlooked, even if he doesn’t handle the football himself frequently.

It’s worth noting that the Saints did not hold a full practice on Wednesday, instead opting for a simple walkthrough to get players back up to speed after their long holiday weekend. So this injury report is an estimation of how much they may have participated had the team run a full-contact practice.

The injury reports published by the Saints and the 49ers on Wednesday are the initial reports for the week. A second, updated report will be released on Thursday. The final injury report with game status for certain players will be issued on Friday. Daily changes in practice participation are noted in bold text.
