Do Tennessee and Arizona losses lock up 1-seed for UNC?

A head-to-head win against Tennessee and eight straight wins help UNC’s case for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. Will it get one?

With the way they’ve been playing, the North Carolina Tar Heels deserve a top seed in next week’s NCAA Tournament.

UNC (27-6, 17-3 ACC), the ACC’s top seed, has won its last eight games. Thanks to an RJ Davis-led second half push against Pitt on Friday, North Carolina will be playing longtime, in-state rival NC State in Saturday night’s ACC Championship (8:30 p.m. ET).

The only issue – Arizona and Tennessee have been just a step ahead of the Tar Heels. Arizona (25-8, 15-5) is the PAC-12’s best team, while the Volunteers (24-8, 24-4) led the SEC.

Conference tournament results might have switched up the seeding a little bit.

Tennessee got smoked by Mississippi State in yesterday’s SEC quarterfinals, while Oregon won comfortably (67-59) against the Wildcats.

With UNC’s hot streak, which includes two ACC tournament wins already, there’s a strong case made for it to take that 1-seed in the Big Dance. North Carolina also has fewer losses – not a number that determines seeding – but is something worth looking at come Selection Sunday.

If UNC can beat NC State for a third time this season, that top seed will all but be locked up. Want to look at another reason for giving North Carolina a 1-seed? It beat Tennessee head-to-head.

Regardless of where the Tar Heels end up, they are playing their best basketball at the right time.

Dawn Staley had the perfect advice for South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso before game-winning 3-pointer

Good advice, Coach!

South Carolina’s women’s basketball team stayed undefeated on the season on Saturday in a stunning finish against Tennessee.

Center Kamilla Cardoso hit a clutch 3-pointer as the clock expired to give South Carolina the 74-73 victory at home over the Lady Vols in one of the best endings to a basketball game this season.

After the game, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley told ESPN what advice she gave Cardoso before she saved the team’s undefeated season. It’s pretty perfect.

“The last thing that came out of my mouth was ‘Kamilla, shoot that blanky blank,'” Staley quipped in the postgame interview about her advice to Cardoso.

Cardoso took her coach’s suggestion and it worked out more than fine for South Carolina as the team earned the hard-fought victory over Tennessee.

The team will undoubtedly remain atop the rankings and should be a favorite once the 2024 NCAA women’s tournament gets going later this month.

Candace Parker hilariously called Aces teammate A’Ja Wilson on Facetime to celebrate Tennessee right before South Carolina’s epic buzzer-beater

Celebrated too soon!

The South Carolina women’s basketball team refused to lose on Saturday, as Kamilla Cardoso scored her first 3-pointer of the season to top Tennessee at the buzzer.

The heroic bucket from Cardoso kept South Carolina’s undefeated season alive and sent the Lady Vols home with a devastating defeat.

The last-second South Carolina victory also caught Tennessee great and current Las Vegas Aces forward Candace Parker off-guard as she Facetimed with her teammate, a former South Carolina standout.

Wilson posted on Twitter (X) a screenshot of the two talking on Facetime, as she said that Parker called Wilson thinking the game was over only to realize it most certainly was not after Cardoso’s shot.

It’s never a good idea to celebrate until the final buzzer, especially in a sport like basketball where so much can change with one bucket.

Parker probably won’t hear the end of this for quite some time, as Wilson both got a big victory for her alma mater and a good laugh out of Parker’s confident Facetime call.

PHOTO GALLERY: Alabama’s tight loss to Tennessee at home

Photos tell the story of Alabama’s close home loss to Tennessee as the regular season nears its conclusion.

Alabama basketball hosted Tennessee, which warranted an appearance from ESPN’s College GameDay and a handful of notable stars. Unfortunately for the Crimson Tide, the Volunteers got the win and the series sweep on the season.

Though Nate Oats and his team mounted an impressive first-quarter comeback, Tennessee came out strong in the second half and the Tide’s foul trouble didn’t help.

As the regular season comes to a close, everyone wonders how wins and losses impact the seeding for the NCAA ‘March Madness’ Tournament. As far as this one is concerned, it hurts the Tide in the SEC standings, but shouldn’t make too much of a difference overall as Alabama chases a national championship.

Up next for Alabama is a Tuesday road game against Florida. When the two met just a few weeks ago, the contest was electric. The Crimson Tide will look to put the Gators away early in the penultimate matchup in the 2023-2024 regular season.

Before looking ahead, revisit the excitement from Alabama’s latest game against the Vols with the top images from inside Coleman Coliseum.

Everything Nate Oats said following Alabama’s 81-74 home loss to Tennessee

Nate Oats discusses Alabama’s tough home loss to Tennessee

Saturday night’s epic SEC showdown inside Coleman Coliseum between Alabama and Tennessee did not go the way Tide fans would have hoped with Alabama dropping the home matchup against the Vols, 81-74.

[autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and Alabama would have as much as a seven-point lead in the second half, but could not close out the veteran Vols down the stretch. Tennessee would outscore the Tide 42-33 in the final 20 minutes of action.

It would now take a miracle for the Tide outright win the SEC regular season title.

Following the tough home loss, Coach Oats would speak to the media about his team’s performance. Below is everything he had to say:

Alabama basketball chokes away a second half lead losing to Tennessee 81-74

Alabama basketball takes gut punch at home, losing to Tennessee 81-74

In the biggest home game in modern Alabama basketball history, [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Crimson Tide basketball team choked away a second half against Tennessee as the Vols defeated the Tide, 81-74.

Crimson Tide fans had Coleman Coliseum rocking but the Tide could not execute down the stretch to send the fans home happy.

With the loss, Alabama likely let their chances of winning the regular season SEC title as the Vols now are in sole possession of first place and have two head-to-head wins over the Tide.

To give credit where credit is due, Tennessee has appeared to be the most complete team in the SEC throughout the season and Alabama was just not consistent enough to come away with a win.

Hopefully, the Tide can get starting guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. back from his head injury soon, because this Alabama team is not the same without him.

It won’t get any easier for the Tide with a road game against Florida on Tuesday night.
