Wisconsin legend Russell Wilson named team captain of the Seattle Seahawks

In news that will surprise nobody: yesterday Wisconsin legend Russell Wilson was named a team captain of the Seattle Seahawks.

In news that will surprise absolutely nobody: On Monday, Wisconsin legend Russell Wilson was named a team captain of the Seattle Seahawks.

This year will be the eighth straight Wilson has been the captain of Seattle’s offense; 2012 is the only year the former Badger played in the NFL without being a team captain.

Not much else needs to be said about Wilson’s college and NFL resume, as he projects to be a first-ballot selection to the Hall of Fame and has arguably been the best quarterback in the league over the last decade.

Now, entering his age 32 season, the former Badger will continue to seek the elusive second Super Bowl victory and further cement his legacy as one of the best quarterbacks of this generation.

Expect the Broncos to continue drafting team captains this year

The Broncos have made an effort to draft high-character players and it’s worked well over the last two years.

The Denver Broncos have drafted 16 players over the last two years. Of those players, 11 were team captains in college. Expect that trend to continue this year.

During his pre-draft Zoom conference call with reporters on Monday, Broncos general manager John Elway explained that the team wasn’t specifically targeting high-character players before 2018.

“We had a couple of misses back there, and I think the misses that we had were people that were character concerns,” Elway said. “I think we’ve kind of focused and turned around a little bit more than we have [in the past].”

Elway explained that in recent seasons, when the team has been losing, some players didn’t set good examples in the locker room. So Denver’s front office made an effort to bring in high-character players to turn around the mentality of the team.

“We have some really good leadership in that locker room now, positive leadership, and guys that want to win football games,” Elway said.

Demario Davis keeps perspective after difficult loss to Vikings

Demario Davis is keeping himself and his New Orleans Saints team grounded after their wild-card round playoffs loss to the Minnesota Vikings

How many more years can the New Orleans Saints keep feeding off the idea that they’ve left “unfinished business” in the playoffs? That’s been the narrative the Saints have chased ever since their exit in the 2017 postseason, and it stayed alive after their 2018 finale, too. Now, with the 2019 playoffs behind them, where do they go next?

Fortunately, that’s a question experienced leaders like linebacker Demario Davis can answer. And his message to his teammates is one cautioning patience.

“You have to realize it’s the end of a chapter and not a book,” Davis told ESPN’s Mike Triplett. That doesn’t mean the journey is painless. He continued, “Not all losses feel the same. But all losses hurt the same.”

It makes sense that Davis would take such a measured approach. He toiled thanklessly for years with the rudderless New York Jets and Cleveland Browns, watching playoff games from his couch or a treadmill at the gym. He’s acutely aware of how difficult it is to even reach the postseason, much less win games there.

And like he pointed out, this isn’t the end of things. Sean Payton and Drew Brees are still running the show in New Orleans. Davis is still the captain of the defense. The team is on a great trajectory to get right back into the thick of things next year, and with this kind of experience behind them, they should be better-prepared than ever. But that’s not going to do much to dull the pain of an early playoffs exit, and it’s a natural reaction. Like Davis said, it’s important to remember that this is the end of a chapter, not the last page in the book.

Terrell Davis will serve as a team captain for AFC at 2020 Pro Bowl

Former Broncos running back Terrell Davis will serve as one of the AFC’s team captains at the 2020 Pro Bowl.

The NFL announced Monday that former Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis is one of four legends who will serve as team captains at the 2020 Pro Bowl.

Davis and former Buffalo Bills defensive end Bruce Smith will serve as captains for the AFC and former Washington Redskins cornerback Darrell Green and ex-NFL quarterback Michael Vick will serve as NFC captains.

Davis earned three Pro Bowl nods and three first-team All-Pro selections during his time with the Broncos and he earned league MVP honors after rushing for over 2,000 yards 1998. Davis helped Denver win back-to-back Super Bowls in the late 1990s and was named the MVP of Super Bowl XXXII.

A member of the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade Team and the Broncos’ Ring of Fame, Davis was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

The Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game will begin at 1 p.m. MT and will air on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ABC and Disney XD. Tickets start at $45.
