TCU at West Virginia picks and predictions

Prediction

TCU 77, West Virginia 73

Moneyline

At the current odds, TCU (+110) is an enticing wager. The Horned Frogs are the superior team and the Mountaineers have yet to beat a Big 12 opponent this season.

Against the spread

West Virginia is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 home games against a team with a winning road record and 0-4 ATS in its last 4 home games overall. Plus, the Mountaineers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall.

If you’re uncomfortable taking TCU to win, then you can go with the spread instead. Otherwise, PASS on the spread and bet the moneyline.

Over/Under

OVER 148.5 (-110) is where I’m leaning. Both of these teams have been involved in some high-scoring conference games recently and that likely won’t change on Wednesday.

TCU has gone Over in its last 5 road games and its last 4 games overall. Meanwhile, West Virginia is 6-3 to the Over in its 9 home games this season.

TCU at West Virginia: Three things to know

  1. West Virginia lost to No. 3 Baylor, 94-89, Tuesday, recording its second overtime loss at home this season. The Mountaineers also lost on a last-second shot to Texas and by two possessions against Florida, with both of those games coming on home hardwood as well. WVU committed 16 turnovers against the Bears, the team’s most in a single game since Nov. 26.
  2. The Horned Frogs’ loss at home to West Virginia Feb. 23 (74-66) is part of a skid that has seen TCU lose four of its last five games. Texas Christian shot just 38.8% in its most recent setback, a 69-49 defeat at Texas Tech on Tuesday. TCU has shot under 40% in four of its last six.
  3. The Mountaineers are 3-1 straight-up and 3-1 ATS over their last four games against the Frogs. In series games in Morgantown, WVU is 8-0 all-time (6-2 ATS).

TCU at West Virginia: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

West Virginia 80, TCU 67

Money line (ML)

West Virginia, coming off the loss, is a solid play if you can get the Mountaineers at -925. Otherwise, PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Horned Frogs are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall. The Mountaineers are 5-1 ATS in their last six games following an ATS loss.

The Frogs’ Thursday game at WVU will mark its third straight away from Ft. Worth. For WVU, this game has Big-12 tourney ramifications: the Mountaineers want to win out and earn a first-round bye.

WEST VIRGINIA -12.5 (-110) is the lean, but its one without much wiggle room.

Over/Under (O/U)

The West Virginia defense has subtly trended the wrong way in recent weeks. The Over is 8-2 in WVU’s last 10 games.

BACK THE OVER 143.5 (-115).

TCU at West Virginia: Three things to know

  • The TCU offense has produced just six aerial touchdowns in as many games this fall. The Horned Frogs have averaged 211.7 passing yards per game (85th in FBS). Things don’t figure to trend the other way this week: West Virginia ranks fourth in the nation in passing yardage allowed. The Mountaineers have yielded just 161.6 passing yards per game.
  • West Virginia QB Jarrett Doege is a fourth-year talent who has thrown 57 TD passes and 21 picks over his career. After throwing a combined three interceptions in games against Baylor (Oct. 3) and Kansas (Oct. 17), Doege has responded by logging three straight 300-yard games without a pick. Over that stretch, the WVU signal-caller has thrown 134 passes.
  • WVU has won three of the last four meetings in this series (4-0 against the spread). The Mountaineers won in Ft. Worth last fall, beating the Frogs 20-17 in a defensive struggle which produced just 541 combined yards ad five turnovers.

TCU at West Virginia: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

West Virginia 27, TCU 24

Money line (ML)

Both teams have a couple of one-score losses this season, but TCU figures to have a bit more momentum. There is quite a bit of gray area, however, in quantifying much more than that. In a game that should perhaps have more of a one-and-a-half-point line, TAG A SLIGHT LEAN ON TCU (+125) due to some value on the price.

Against the spread (ATS)

Too many conflicting signals: PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

The profiles of these teams have the total tamped down into the mid-40s. Peg that total as yielding some value on the high side. Both defenses are adept at creating havoc, enough so to set up several short-field scores. Figure TCU as being able to stay on schedule perhaps more than is suggested by surface numbers and apply the same logic to West Virginia’s big-play potential.

Throw in a default setting for 2020 college football, and BACK THE OVER 45.5 (-106).
