TCU at Texas picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 75, TCU 73

Moneyline

AVOID.

Texas (-300) is expected to win at home, but the risk of taking the Longhorns straight up is not worth the reward in what may be a close game.

Against the spread

TCU +6.5 (-105) is where I’ll confidently side in this game as the Horned Frogs shouldn’t be this big of underdogs against the Longhorns. TCU’s 2 losses this season have come by a combined 3 points.

TCU is 5-1-1 ATS in its last 7 games following a loss and the road team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between these 2 programs. Texas is also just 1-7 ATS in its last 8 games following a win.

Over/Under

Big 12 games have had plenty of scoring this season, so OVER 142.5 (-115) is where I’m leaning. TCU averages a solid 78.0 points per game (58th in the nation) while Texas averages 82.3 points per game (18th).

The Horned Frogs have hit the Over in 4 straight road games and 4 of their last 5 games overall. The Longhorns are 5-0 to the Over in their last 5 home games and 6 of their last 7 games overall.

TCU at Texas odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s TCU at Texas odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The TCU Horned Frogs (17-8, 6-7 Big 12) visit Frank Erwin Center to take on the No. 22 Texas Longhorns (19-8, 8-6) Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the TCU vs. Texas odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

TCU enters this conference matchup having taken down West Virginia 77-67 at home Monday as a 4.5-point favorite. TCU is 5-4-1 against the spread (ATS) over its last 10 games and 13-9-3 ATS this season.

The Horned Frogs average 68.4 points per game on the season. Their defense is their strength, allowing just 63.9 points per game which is good for 39th-best in the nation.

The Longhorns are also a defensive powerhouse, allowing just 57.7 points per game, ranked fourth nationally.

However, they’re just 12-15 ATS this season and just 4-6 ATS over their last 10 games. Texas is coming off a 61-55 home loss to Texas Tech in which it failed to cover as a 4-point favorite.

TCU at Texas odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 65, TCU 60

Money line

PASS.

I’ll take the points with the underdog and not the riskier money line odds at +320. I will note Texas, despite a strong home record, should be considered unplayable at -420.

Against the spread

BET on TCU +8.5 (-108).

This line has been distanced by Texas’s drastically better home play and also the fact that the Longhorns destroyed the Horned Frogs 73-50 in late Jan.

TCU shot just 12% from deep in that meeting and was even 12-for-21 from the free-throw line. At the very least the latter should improve in this matchup.

Texas is 4-3 since that game and TCU is 4-4 with losses to Baylor and Texas Tech. TCU is 8-5 ATS in conference games and 3-2 ATS against ranked opponents.

Texas has only covered one of its last three games in which it was spotted 8 or more points. I expect a better showing from TCU in the second meeting, one that at least covers an 8.5-point spread.

Over/Under

“LEAN” to the UNDER 126.5 (-110).

This is almost too low for me to consider, but given both teams have defensive-first mindsets, it makes it worth a shot.

Texas allowed just 50 points in the first matchup and is 12-15 O/U on the season. The Over hit with 123 points being scored on a projected total of 122 in that first meeting. It has a top-tier defense, holding Texas Tech to just 61 points last time out.

TCU is 12-11-2 O/U on the season and 6-6-1 O/U in conference play.

TCU at Texas odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s TCU Horned Frogs at Texas Longhorns odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The TCU Horned Frogs (11-7 overall, 4-5 Big 12) make the short trip to Austin, Texas, to face the Texas Longhorns (12-5, 6-4) in a Saturday matinee contest at the Frank C. Erwin Jr. Center. Tip-off will be at 2 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the TCU-Texas college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Texas is No. 13 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

  • Money line: TCU +625 (bet $100 to win $625) | Texas -1000 (bet $1,000 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: TCU +12.5 (-110) | Texas -12.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 141.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

TCU at Texas: Three things to know

  1. The Horned Frogs have won back-to-back games after losing five in a row from Jan. 5-30. Improved rebounding has been a big factor in the recent victories. TCU was out-rebounded by an average margin of 5.6 boards per game over its losing skid. In its two straight wins — home games against Oklahoma State and Iowa State — TCU averaged a plus-13.0 on the glass.
  2. Texas is looking to win its second consecutive game after losing three in a row. The Longhorns defeated Kansas State 80-77 Tuesday. UT tied a season-high with 13 3-pointers in that game. G Andrew Jones knocked down four of those treys en route to logging 24 points against the Wildcats. In his last eight games, Jones has connected on 37.9% of his attempts from beyond the arc; he averaged 19.6 points per game over that span.
  3. The Longhorns failed to cover the spread in each of their last six games. Texas is just 6-11 ATS for the season. The ‘Horns covered the spread in just five of their last 18 games as a favorite of 15 or fewer points.

TCU at Texas: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Texas 77, TCU 66

Money line (ML)

The Horned Frogs have registered some solid road performances this winter: An overtime loss at Missouri, an eight-point loss at Kansas (within two points late), and a win at Oklahoma State.

UT is the better team, but free-throw frequency, second-chance points, and 3-point shooting are areas where the Frogs figure to have some sway.

Texas Christian at +625 is in the ballpark but hold out for a figure in the +650 range if chasing the upset.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

TCU is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games against teams playing .600 basketball or better. The Frogs are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games.

Peg the visiting five as being good enough to keep this game in 6-to-8-point territory long enough to give the 12.5-point figure some leverage.

BACK THE HORNED FROGS +12.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Tag this meeting with a bit of a lean on the Over. Maybe not enough to pull the trigger but enough to make for a line-watch.

PASS.
