Former Cal Poly DB Donovan Saunders will transfer to Texas A&M

Texas A&M has flipped former Cal Poly cornerback Donovan Saunders, who was recently committed to TCU.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is on fire in the transfer portal and is hitting on some major positions of need. He wasn’t telling any lies when he said there would be some moves made after the bowl games.

The Elko staff is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to the secondary. This time, they have nabbed the No. 9 cornerback in the portal Donovan Saunders. The All-Big Sky selection is another huge need filled and will be great competition added to the defensive back room.

The San Diego product stands at 6’3″ and as a true freshman produced 17 tackles, 3 interceptions, and an impressive 11 pass breakups. If he was not transferring, he would’ve been competing for a starting spot for the Mustangs. This was also another flip for the Elko team as Saunders was committed to TCU before switching over to the Aggies.

Texas A&M offers Former Cal Poly CB Donovan Saunders

Texas A&M and HC Mike Elko have fielded an offer to former Cal Poly CB Donovan Saunders, who is verbally committed to TCU.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has been on quite the recruiting/transfer portal tear this month, signing all but two commits in the 2024 cycle while landing seven players through the portal, including several plug-and-play starters.

In the secondary, Elko has already rebuilt the safety room after the departures of Demani Richardson and Jardin Gilbert, landing commitments from safeties Trey Jones (Central Michigan) and De’Rickey Wright (Vanderbilt) to pair with former Kansas State cornerback Will Lee Jr. Elko’s first commit since becoming head coach.

In need of more experience and depth in the cornerback room due to the recent portal attrition at the spot, the Aggies have offered former Cal Poly CB Donovan Saunders, who has been verbally committed to TCU since Monday, Dec. 18.

In 10 games last season, Saunders, who stands at 6’3″ and 185 pounds, appeared in 10 games during the 2023 season, notching 17 tackles, three interceptions and 11 pass breakups. Going into the 2024 season, Saunders has two seasons of eligibility remaining and would immediately compete for a prominent rotational spot in the Aggies lineup.

More people watched the Longhorns than any other team in Texas in 2023

Texas is still the flagship program of the state.

Texas Football Life recently released a graphic that highlights the 12 most viewed regular-season Texas college football games during 2023. Of the 12 games, the Texas Longhorns were the featured team in eight.

Texas’ games versus Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Kansas, Rice, Houston, Kansas State and TCU were in the top 12 of the most-watched games in Texas.

Texas A&M and TCU are the only other college football teams listed. Texas A&M featured three times among the most-watched games while TCU appeared once.

Despite what fans of other Texas teams may think, the Longhorns will continue to be the flagship program in Texas.

5 potential transfer destinations for Alabama WR Ja’Corey Brooks

Alabama WR Ja’Corey Brooks recently announced he would be transferring. Here are five schools that could be on his radar.

Junior wide receiver Ja’Corey Brooks joined the Crimson Tide program as a 2021 five-star recruit out of IMG Academy. The Miami native recently announced his intention to transfer out of Alabama after a few seasons in Tuscaloosa.

In three seasons with Alabama, he totaled 57 receptions for 896 yards and 10 touchdowns. His sophomore season in 2022 was spectacular, reeling in 39 catches for 674 yards and eight touchdowns. However, his production came to a screeching halt in 2023, as he’s only caught three passes for 30 yards.

Likely due to his lack of usage, Brooks decided it would be in his best interest to transfer out of Alabama and continue his collegiate career elsewhere.

Here are five transfer destinations that just make sense for the current four-star transfer prospect.

Josh Hoover will start at QB for TCU against Texas

Texas will play against the redshirt freshman when they travel to Fort Worth on Saturday.

The starting quarterback of the TCU Horned Frogs, Chandler Morris, has been out of play since Oct. 7 due to a knee injury he sustained against Iowa State.

Since then, redshirt freshman Josh Hoover has taken over the offense, resulting in a fluctuating performance with an equal number of touchdowns and interceptions.

In his best game of the year against BYU, Hoover threw for 439 yards and four touchdowns, but he has thrown an interception in every game he has played.

Texas must capitalize on the freshman’s mistakes and prioritize finishing drives to get into the endzone.

Hoover will start for the third consecutive game on Saturday as Texas heads to Fort Worth for a 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff.

Beat TCU: Horned Frogs aim for a Texas upset to sweeten a sour season

This game could mean everything to Horned Frogs fans.

Texas faces a common challenge in each of the final three games against TCU, Iowa State and Texas Tech: The games inherently mean more to its opponent.

Make no mistake, Texas has everything to play for in 2023. The team is 8-1 with a Big 12 title at stake. A place in the College Football Playoff also hangs in the balance. That said, against TCU the Longhorns face an opponent with little to lose and much to gain from the game.

The TCU Horned Frogs are 4-5 on the year following an embarrassing loss to Texas Tech last Thursday. You can expect more inspired football from TCU this week.

The last few matchups against the Horned Frogs haven’t gone much in Texas favor. The Longhorns lost last season in a low scoring battle. The year before, Texas limped past a bad TCU team on the road, 32-27.

Under former head coach Tom Herman’s leadership, the Longhorns went 1-3 against TCU. The records never mattered. Texas always got TCU’s best game.

Texas should demolish TCU this week. It should be a lot more like the first half of the Kansas State game than the second half. The potential return of starting quarterback Quinn Ewers would make that result more likely. Nevertheless, what should happen often doesn’t happen when the Longhorns travel to Fort Worth.

Winning for Texas will require a high level of mental toughness and attention to detail over the next three games. The Longhorns will look to prove their mettle against the Horned Frogs on Saturday. You can watch the game at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
