Titans’ NFL draft history with the No. 72 overall pick

A look back at the picks the Titans have made at No. 72 overall in franchise history.

After going over the Tennessee Titans’ NFL draft history with their first two picks of the 2023 NFL draft (we’ve linked to those articles at the bottom of this one), we’re now moving on to their third-round selection at No. 72 overall.

The third-round pick is one of six Tennessee has in total in this year’s draft, with the team owning one in every round but the fourth thanks to, of course, the 2023 trade with the Atlanta Falcons for Julio Jones.

The Titans have made a pick at No. 72 overall a total of six times in their history, but only once since moving to Tennessee. That pick was wide receiver Taywan Taylor, who ended up being a disappointment.

Prior to moving to Nashville, the Titans made this selection five other times in franchise history. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and see who else the team came away with at No. 72 overall in its history.

Former Titans WR Taywan Taylor shines in USFL Week 4

Former Titans WR Taywan Taylor had his best game in the Breakers’ Week 4 win over the Gamblers.

Former Tennessee Titans third-round pick and wide receiver Taywan Taylor was a standout performer in USFL Week 4, as his team, the New Orleans Breakers, held on to win against the Houston Gamblers, 23-16.

Taylor had a game-high 112 yards on four catches, with a long reception of 43 yards in the winning effort. The Western Kentucky product’s career-high in receiving yards in a single game during his time in the NFL was 104.

Three of Taylor’s catches came on scoring drives. Taylor had gains of 27 and 25 on receptions during New Orleans’ first touchdown drive of the game in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, Taylor’s long reception of the afternoon helped set the Breakers up for a game-tying field goal.

New Orleans would go on to get the ball back with just under one minute left to play and orchestrated a touchdown drive to ultimately grab the win and improve to 3-1. New Orleans sits in second place in the South division.

Taylor also chipped in with a pair of kick returns for 27.5 yards per, including a long return of 35 yards.

On the season, Taylor has 169 receiving yards, ranking fourth on the team, and another 127 kick return yards, which leads New Orleans.

After spending two disappointing years in Tennessee and totaling 53 catches for 697 yards and two touchdowns, Taylor was traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2019 for a seventh-round pick.

He failed to record a catch in six games over two seasons with the Browns. In 2021, Taylor was signed by the Houston Texans but never played in a game. He was taken in the 16th round of the USFL draft back in February.

The Houston Texans are trimming the excess in their receivers room.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, the Texans are cutting receiver Taywan Taylor, who the club signed to a one-year contract in May during the club’s offseason program.

Taylor was originally a 2017 third-round pick for the Tennessee Titans. After spending two seasons with the AFC South club, Taylor played for the Cleveland Browns.

In Taylor’s four seasons to date, the 5-11, 203-pound wideout has caught 53 passes for 697 yards and two touchdowns through 35 games, 10 of which he has started. Taylor also has three career kickoff returns for 53 yards, all of which came in the 2019 season in Cleveland.

Former Tennessee Titans wide receiver and 2017 third-round pick, Taywan Taylor, has resurfaced in the AFC South after signing with the Houston Texans, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

Taylor spent the past two seasons with the Cleveland Browns after being dealt there in 2019 from the Titans in exchange for a 2020 seventh-round pick that ended up being quarterback Cole McDonald. who is no longer in Tennessee.

However, things didn’t go too well for Taylor in Cleveland. He appeared in just six games and saw only two targets, failing to record a single catch. Taylor saw just 51 snaps during his Browns tenure.

The Western Kentucky product’s best season came in 2018 with the Titans when he finished with career-highs in catches (37) and yards (466).

Even though it’s the Texans and one would assume Taylor has a great shot to make their lackluster roster, Houston does have a crowded wide receivers room, so Taylor will still be facing an uphill climb to make the cut.

Browns roster moves: WR Taywan Taylor to I.R.

The team also made a change at the bottom of the practice squad

The Browns were busy making roster moves on Tuesday. In addition to placing starting RG Wyatt Teller on the reserve/COVID-19 list and activating Porter Gustin off the same list, the team placed reserve wideout Taywan Taylor on injured reserve.

Taylor injured his neck in a practice session and did not play in Week 13. Coach Kevin Stefanski indicated on Monday that the team was in need of further evaluation, and that resulted in Taylor going on I.R.

Moving Taylor to I.R. opens a space for Marvin Hall, who was claimed off waivers from the Detroit Lions. Hall remains on the exempt list while he clears COVID-19 protocols.

The team also shuffled the practice squad. Cleveland activated WR Ryan Switzer from the practice squad/injured list and released DE Jamal Davis.

Browns inactives vs. Titans show 2 starters out with injuries

Denzel Ward will miss his second straight game with a calf strain

The Cleveland Browns inactive player list for Week 13 was a predictable assortment of names. With three players, including two starters, ruled out on Friday due to injuries, there wasn’t a lot of room for drama in coach Kevin Stefanski’s decisions.

Cornerback Denzel Ward and wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge are both out with injuries that aren’t severe enough to land them on the injured reserve. Wideout Taywan Taylor is also out with a neck injury suffered in practice during the week.

The full inactives list:

WR KhaDarel Hodge

DE Joe Jackson

WR Taywan Taylor

CB Denzel Ward

RB Dontrell Hilliard

S Tedric Thompson

Thompson did not pass through the required COVID-19 protocols to practice with the team or make the trip to Nashville. He was claimed off waivers during the week and activated on Friday.
