What’s next for Oklahoma? 5 offseason storylines follow

Oklahoma may not play for almost a month but there are still plenty of things to monitor in the coming weeks. From @thatmanbryant

It’s been just over a year since Lincoln Riley’s defection to Southern California. The Oklahoma Sooners have just completed their first regular season under first-year head coach Brent Venables. It wasn’t pretty but the Sooners find themselves bowl-eligible after a 6-6 season.

The only thing consistent about this team was their inconsistency.

Week to week we never knew what we would get from them. With only the bowl game remaining, Oklahoma has the ability to showcase itself one more time and get over .500 with a win.

With that said, there are notable storylines to follow as we get closer to the offseason even while the Sooners prepare for the eventual bowl game to come. Take a look at the five storylines we’ll be looking at with the regular season behind us.

4-star EDGE Colton Vasek flips commitment to the Texas Longhorns

The Sooners lost a key commitment on Tuesday as four-star edge rusher Colton Vasek flipped his commitment from Oklahoma to Texas. From @john9williams

The Oklahoma Sooners crushed it on the recruiting trail over the summer. Pulling in commitments from across the country and raising their recruiting ranking into the top five of the 2023 class.

That 2023 class took a hit on Tuesday as four-star edge rusher Colton Vasek flipped his commitment from Oklahoma to the Texas Longhorns.

Vasek, a native of Austin and son of a former Texas player, made the decision after being committed since the first of August.

“I’ve grown up a UT fan my entire life,” Vasek told Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports. “When I went to go see the OU vs. Texas game as an OU recruit, it just really didn’t feel right to me at all. Deep down, I wanted to be playing for the team wearing burnt orange.”

It was a surprise commitment at the time, given his roots in Austin and affinity for the program since his childhood. Ultimately the allure of the team he grew up with was too much to resist, as the Longhorns steal a key commitment from the Oklahoma Sooners.

The writing was on the wall yesterday when OU Insider and 247Sports’ Parker Thune issued a crystal ball prediction sending Vasek to the Longhorns and today’s decision made that a reality.

Oklahoma now turns their attention to four-star edge rusher [autotag]Tausili Akana[/autotag] to replace Vasek. The Sooners were recently included in Akana’s top 10.

5 things to consider when thinking about Oklahoma’s future

Oklahoma has had a rough year but here are five things to consider when considering the Sooners’ future. From @thatmanbryant

Oklahoma fans have experienced a roller coaster for the better part of the last 500 days. There was optimism after the 2020 season about the possibilities for that 2021 team. That optimism was dashed when their on-field performance never came close to the lofty expectations. There was a mid-season QB change involving a pair of former five-star quarterbacks.

After picking up a win over Texas in one of the greatest comebacks of all time, the Sooners’ offense stalled in late-season losses on the road to Baylor and Oklahoma State. The day following that loss to the Cowboys, Lincoln Riley bolted for the University of Southern California after gaslighting an entire fanbase that he wasn’t leaving (for LSU).

In the week that followed, Oklahoma hired Brent Venables. Despite the attrition suffered by the 2022 recruiting class after Riley’s departure, Venables and his staff helped put together a group that was viewed as the No. 8 recruiting class in the cycle.

Offseason expectations were fairly high (quite possibly, too high) as we rolled into the summer. Summer practices offered extreme optimism, as did the first three games.

A confounding loss to Kansas State, a team notorious for how they’ve played Oklahoma as of late, made us take a step back. The next week, Oklahoma barely got off the bus before getting blasted by TCU. The Horned Frogs now look like the favorites to win the Big 12 and possibly find themselves in the College Football Playoff.

Oklahoma lost quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the TCU loss and would be forced to play without him in the Red River Showdown. The Sooners got their bell rung by rivals Texas, losing 49-0. They ran the wildcat offense for the vast majority of the game with multiple scholarship quarterbacks dressed. That felt like rock bottom.

Gabriel returned the following week for homecoming against Kansas. The offense would shine, and the defense made some plays. The Sooners beat Iowa State in a game where Gabriel and the passing game didn’t have to carry the load before dropping their latest contest to Baylor, where the defense couldn’t stop the run.

We sit days away from Oklahoma going on the road to Morgantown to face the West Virginia Mountaineers. Oklahoma is not only 5-4, but their biggest rival appears to be in a better spot going forward as both look ahead to their eventual departure to the SEC.

Looks can be deceiving, and things can change from year to year. With that said, here are five things to consider or reconsider about Oklahoma’s future.

OU Insider’s Parker Thune flips Crystal Ball for 4-star EDGE Colton Vasek

After committing to the Sooners in August, Texas Legacy Colton Vasek looks to be changing his tune on the Longhorns. From @john9williams

Committed since August 1, [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag] shocked a lot of people when he chose Oklahoma over his hometown Texas Longhorns just a couple of months ago. Now it looks like the Texas legacy is going to provide another shocker as OU Insider at 247Sports’ Parker Thune has flipped his crystal ball prediction in favor of the Texas Longhorns.

The ninth-highest-rated commitment in the Sooners 2023 recruiting class hasn’t announced his intentions at this point. However, if Thune is predicting a flip to Texas, that announcement will be coming shortly.

Vasek is ranked 127th in the 247Sports composite rankings and No. 137 in the On3 Consensus.

While certainly a disappointment to see a commitment heading to your biggest rival, the Sooners still have five-star edge rusher [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] and four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] in the fold for 2023. Oklahoma also was included in [autotag]Tausili Akana[/autotag]’s top 10.

You hate to lose commitments, but if the Sooners can keep the rest of the class together and somehow land Akana, they’ll still be in great shape. Oklahoma’s still got a top-10 class, and there will be opportunities for them to bring in players currently committed to other teams as well.

Friday Night Notes: Cormani McClain chooses Miami, Michigan’s big visits & more

Lakeland cornerback Cormani McClain chooses Miami, Michigan has several big visits this weekend and more in this week’s Friday Night Notes.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

Miami made the biggest splash in the recruiting game this week, earning a surprise commitment from the top remaining undecided defender in the nation.

Lakeland (Fla.) cornerback Cormani McClain announced Thursday that he’ll be playing for Miami, choosing the Hurricanes over Alabama and Florida. McCLain is ranked No. 1 at his position and No. 2 overall in his recruiting class behind only Texas QB commit Arch Manning.

McClain (6-foot-2, 165 pounds) comes ready-made as a potential game-changer for any defense. Like Tariq Woolen and Richard Sherman, McClain is a converted wide receiver who’s put his ball skills to great use on defense. Last year as a Junior, he posted a school-record 10 interceptions, following nine as a Sophomore. During that time, he also had around 1,000 receiving yards and caught 12 touchdown passes.

The scouting report for McClain mentions his freakish size, length and speed but a relatively raw technique. That’s to be expected at his age, and in the right program (Miami’s DB coaches certainly qualify), he should develop into an elite shutdown cornerback in just a couple of seasons.

This news may shock Florida fans, which was the school widely expected to recruit McClain. However, he told Andrew Ivins at 247Sports that Miami moved in front about two months ago.

McClain is the 18th recruit and second five-star prospect for the Hurricanes in this cycle, along with IMG Academy (Fla.) OT Francis Mauigoa.

The news gave a massive boost to Miami in the national recruiting rankings. They have jumped from outside the top 10 and landed at No. 8, one spot ahead of Florida.

2023 four-star edge rusher lists Tigers top-10

The Tigers made the list of finalists for Tausili Akana.

[autotag]Tausili Akana[/autotag] is a 2023, four-star, 6-foot-4, 215-pound edge rusher from Laie, Hawaii, who has trimmed down his list of colleges to 10 as we approach national signing day.

Akana stars at linebacker for Skyridge High School in Lehi, Utah. The Falcons are 9-1 this season and are the No. 2 overall seed in the UHSAA 6A state tournament.  Their only loss this season came to the No. 1 overall seed, Corner Canyon, who they may face in the state championship game.

Akana included the Tigers along with Alabama, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Hawaii, Utah, Oklahoma and Notre Dame.

According to 247Sports, Akana is crystal balled to sign with the Oklahoma Sooners, but the Texas Longhorns are the favorite per On3. That leaves us with many more questions than answers regarding where Akana will play at the next level. Early national signing day is Dec. 21.

Four-star prospect Tausili Akana includes Oklahoma in his top 10

2023 four-star prospect Tausili Akana includes the Oklahoma Sooners in his top 10.

Armed with a top five recruiting class in the 2023 cycle, the Oklahoma Sooenrs already have a fantastic group of prospects pledged to arrive in Norman next year. And there’s a strong possibility that that group could get even better along the way.

One of their top remaining targets in the 2023 recruiting class, [autotag]Tausili Akana[/autotag] narrowed his top 10 schools on Tuesday and included the Oklahoma Sooners. Akana is a top 100 player in the 247Sports Composite, ranks as the No. 12 edge rusher in the nation, and is the top player in the state of Utah.

It’s top 10 is filled with a who’s who on the recruiting trail inclduing Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, and Texas. It won’t be an easy commitment to get for the Sooners, but we’ve seen them go head-to-head with the top schools and win some of these battles.

Akana is a four-star linebacker that has the size and versatility to play along the edge. He displays good power to set the edge in the running game and good speed and agility to work around offensive tackles on the pass rush. He’s got good speed in pursuit, and his length allows him to wrap up ball carriers with ease.

According to 247Sports, Venables is leading the charge for Akana, signifying just how important this recruitment is to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Here’s a look at Akana’s top 10 and where they currently rank in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings.

Friday Night Notes: Best St. John Bosco, Mater Dei prospects, SEC rankings, major visits, and more

The latest look at high school football recruiting from around the country.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school football recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

Friday evening Santa Ana, California, will be the site of the biggest high school football game of the season. For the first time in three years, the top-two schools in the country will meet on the field, as reigning national champion and No. 1 ranked school Mater Dei hosts No. 2 St. John Bosco.

Tickets for the game are a hot item on the resale market, and for a good reason. Together these teams have dozens of highly-ranked recruits for the class of 2023 and into the future – some of whom may end up playing on Sunday afternoons.

We begin this week’s edition of Friday Night Notes by examining a few of the top recruits who are playing tonight.

Jerome Miron, USA TODAY Sports

Matayo Uiagalelei (St. John Bosco Edge – 2023)

Uiagalelei (6-foot-5, 265 pounds) is the highest-rated recruit in this matchup. He’s ranked as the No. 2 edge-rusher in his class and No. 8 overall nationally by 247 Sports. He already has 2.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for a loss this year.

Brandon Baker (Mater Dei Offensive tackle – 2024)

One of the offensive linemen who will be tasked with containing the explosive Uiagalelei is Baker (6-foot-5, 285 pounds). He’s the second-ranked offensive tackle and No. 8 overall recruit in California. Baker has visits scheduled for Ohio State, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Elijah Brown (Mater Dei Quarterback – 2024)

Baker will also be watching the back of his team’s highly-ranked quarterback prospect. Brown (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) is the fifth-best QB in his class and threw five touchdown passes when these teams met last season, a 42-21 win for the Monarchs.

R.J. Jones (St. John Bosco Safety – 2023)

One of the defensive backs Brown will have to keep an eye out for is Jones, a four-star, 6-foot-1, 195 pound safety.  He was committed to Cal but backed out and is now drawing interest from several other Pac-12 schools, including Colorado, UCLA and Oregon State.

LSU set to host first official visitor of the football season

The Tigers are looking to sway yet another blue-chip prospect, this time an edge rusher from out west.

This Saturday morning, the LSU Tigers welcome the Tennessee Volunteers into town for a huge SEC matchup. The Volunteers aren’t the only ones LSU is hosting, though, as the Tigers will welcome their first official visitor of the 2022 season.

[autotag]Tausili Akana[/autotag], a 2023 four-star EDGE from Lehi, Utah, and Skyridge High School, will be in town to check out LSU. Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] currently has 22 commits for the 2023 class, led by five-star wide receiver [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag]

Akana has an SEC-heavy list of possible landing spots. He is currently Crystal Balled to Oklahoma (a future SEC school), and Texas (another future SEC school) is the favorite to land him per On3.

Brian Kelly has done an incredible job so far recruiting against the best teams in the country. He will hope Akana falls in love with the Bayou this weekend.
