5 takeaways from Day 4 of the NFL Combine

Takeaways from the final day of the NFL Scouting Combine.

The NFL Scouting Combine concluded with the offensive linemen taking the field in Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.

The importance of the combine is more for the medicals and team interviews but the testing does help confirm what you see on tape or it may force you to go back to take a look because a prospect performed better than expected or fell short of expectations.

The Indianapolis Colts have their starting five offensive linemen but can use depth across the board and keep an eye on center prospects with Ryan Kelly entering the final year of his contract.

Here, we are looking at the five biggest takeaways from Day 4 of the NFL combine. You can check out our takeaways from the previous days below:

Colts get explosive in 7-round mock draft post-NFL combine

Check out our latest 7-round mock draft following the NFL combine!

With the NFL Scouting Combine officially behind us, the Indianapolis Colts will continue to work on their big board ahead of the 2024 NFL draft.

Even with all this new information from the combine, it’s still a mystery which direction the Colts will go when April 25 arrives. One thing is clear, however. Explosiveness will be the key trait the Colts are looking for on both sides of the ball.

Though it wouldn’t be a Chris Ballard draft without trading back one or five times, we opted against doing so in this iteration. We’ll have plenty of mock drafts that feature trades coming up but until the compensatory picks are set, we’re going with a straight-up prediction.

Without further ado, here’s our post-NFL combine mock draft for the Colts:

8 potential Panthers draft targets who (really) improved their stock at the 2024 combine

There were plenty of dawgs out in Indianapolis this weekend.

Which potential draft targets for the Carolina Panthers showed up and showed out in Indianapolis this week?

Here are eight players, all of which may be of interest to Dan Morgan and Dave Canales, who really improved their stock at the 2024 combine:

Social media reacts to former Wisconsin OL Tanor Bortolini’s stellar NFL combine performance

What kind of NFL career will Tanor Bortolini have?

Former Wisconsin offensive lineman Tanor Bortolini went through his NFL combine testing and positional drills on Sunday.

The former Badger is one of the more versatile offensive lineman in the draft, having started games at left guard, right guard and center during his college career.

Believe it or not, as is the case with many standout Wisconsin offensive lineman this time of the year, Bortolini is rising up draft boards by the day.

First, he impressed scouts in early February with his Reese’s Senior Bowl performance.

Now, Bortolini recently wrapped up his NFL combine testing with one of the more impressive showings from any at his position.

NFL draft pundits along with Wisconsin and NFL fans took to social media to react to his stellar performance:

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 66, Wisconsin OL Tanor Bortolini

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Wisconsin offensive lineman Tanor Bortolini.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers need to bolster their depth on the interior of their offensive line. They need a backup center and could stand to add competition at right guard for Sean Rhyan.

A player who could check both boxes is Tanor Bortolini. The Wisconsin offensive linemen checks in at No. 66 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.

A three-star recruit, Bortolini finished his career as a Badger with 27 starts to his name. He started 14 games at center, seven at left guard, three at right tackle, two at right guard and one at left tackle. That type of versatility will have offensive line coaches pounding the table for the Wisconsin native when Day 3 of the draft rolls around.

“It’s pretty rare when an offensive line for a team stays intact for a full season,” Christian Borman, a contributor for Badgernotes.com, said. “Whether players are getting injured or benched, you need players who can compete for each spot. Bortolini’s ability to play multiple positions well got him on the field, playing over multiple on the roster who were highly-rated recruits coming out of high school. In his college career, he’s played almost 2,000 snaps. 469 were at left guard. 1,058 were at center, 179 were at right guard, and 229 were at right tackle. If that doesn’t say versatile, I don’t know what does.”

Bortolini is quick out of his stance and has the power to generate movement in the running game. He has adequate range as a run blocker and is comfortable on his feet. The former three-star recruit keeps his feet driving at contact and seals running lanes.

“Bortolini is sufficient as a run-blocker,” Borman said. “He’s going to be better in a zone-based running scheme. Despite his shorter arms, he’s pretty quick at the snap, getting to defenders early. His strength is also a positive for his run-blocking. He can drive defenders off the line, opening up some nice running lanes for running backs.”

The versatile offensive linemen has nimble feet and the lateral quickness to mirror pass rushers. He has a high football IQ and is fundamentally sound.  He keeps his head on a swivel and quick reflexes. This past season Bortolini gave up one sack and 11 pressures.

“His footwork and awareness help him a lot in pass protection,” Borman said. “He doesn’t have the longest arms, but his ability to move and stay in front of defenders helps him a lot. He does a great job of passing off and picking up defensive linemen doing twists and stunts. Last season, he played in almost 500 pass-blocking snaps at center and gave up just one sack and two quarterback hits. He had an 80.3 grade from PFF last season in pass-blocking, putting him 20th in the country in that category.”

Fit with the Packers

Every NFL team is looking for offensive linemen that can play multiple positions. Injuries happen and having a player like Bortolini, who offers five-position versatility is something every team could use.

“First and foremost, you are getting an offensive lineman from O-Line U,” Borman said. “Wisconsin linemen, generally, go on to have successful NFL careers. I think his versatility is a huge bonus. He will be able to play center or guard in the NFL, and in today’s game, you want linemen who can play multiple positions. His experience at four of the five line positions should be appealing to teams that are looking for quality line depth, and potentially a solid starter. His versatility will only make him that much more valuable.”

The Packers have had a ton of success finding quality offensive linemen on Day 3 of the draft. Bortolini could come in on day one and battle for starting reps at right guard, while potentially being the replacement for Josh Myers at center. The Packers need quality depth behind and Bortolini would provide depth along the interior while being able to kick outside to tackle in a pinch.

2024 NFL draft projections for every former Wisconsin Badger

2024 NFL draft projections for every former Wisconsin Badger

Only 63 days remain until the 2024 NFL draft.

Several former Wisconsin Badgers are in the midst of preparation for the event, led by star running back Braelon Allen.

The draft is often somewhat quiet on the Wisconsin front, especially as Alabama and Georgia tend to dominate the early rounds. But it seems as if there are a few sleepers each year — former Badgers who fall in the draft before becoming productive NFL players.

That is the case again this year. Neither Allen nor any of his former Wisconsin teammates are projected at the top of the draft. But knowing this football program and the NFL players it develops, I’m sure some valuable contributors will emerge from the group.

Here are the initial 2024 NFL draft projections for Allen and every other former Wisconsin Badger:

Colts’ 7-round mock draft pre-NFL combine

Our first mock draft of the offseason ahead of the NFL combine.

The Indianapolis Colts are focusing on gathering their draft board ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, and the scouting combine should help them do so in a major way.

At this point in the offseason, it’s far too early to know exactly which way the Colts will be leaning with the No. 15 overall pick. Considering they don’t have a need at quarterback, they can essentially go any direction they want.

A lot will change at the NFL scouting combine in Indy next week but before it arrives, here’s a seven-round mock draft for the Colts:

Panthers 2024 mock draft 3.0: Post-Super Bowl LVIII edition

With the Super Bowl in the books and the combine less than two weeks away, here’s our latest 2024 mock draft for the Panthers.

As the lights on Super Bowl LVII had faded, the focus of the NFL now starts to shift towards April—for the 2024 NFL draft.

So, with the combine set to kick off in less than two weeks, who should Carolina Panthers fans have their eyes on?

Here’s a post-Super Bowl, pre-combine mock to hold you off . . .

Three former Badgers accept invitations to NFL combine

Three former Badgers accept invitations to NFL Combine

The 2024 NFL scouting combine begin on Feb. 26 in Indianapolis and three former Badgers football athletes accepted their invitations on Wednesday.

Running back Braelon Allen heads to the combine after wrapping up an impressive three-year career with Wisconsin. The Fond Du Lac native finished his time in Madison with 3,494 rushing yards and 35 rushing touchdowns over 35 contests. He looks to continue his dominance at the professional level.

Offensive lineman Tanor Bortolini also heads to Indianapolis after he announced he would make the leap to the NFL after the 2023 campaign. Bortolini started at center for each of the team’s 12 regular-season games this past season. He also played offensive guard during his four years in Madison.

Finally, linebacker Maema Njongmeta will join his teammates at the NFL combine in a few weeks. Njongmeta spent four seasons with Wisconsin, racking up 158 total tackles (80 solo), including 6.5 sacks. He also intercepted a pass and recovered three fumbles over 26 games.

How former Wisconsin Badgers performed in the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl

How former Wisconsin Badgers performed in the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl

The Wisconsin football program sent just two alumni to the Reese’s Senior Bowl this year — versatile offensive lineman Tanor Bortolini and long snapper Peter Bowden.

Bortolini made some headlines throughout the week with his work during the open practices. Bowden, on the other hand, flew more under the radar as there isn’t much focus paid to long snappers.

In the game itself, which took place earlier today, the National Team defeated the American Team 16-7. Bortolini and Bowden both were victorious on the National Team, Bortolini seeing time at both guard positions and center while Bowden snapped for several kicking situations.

Bortolini’s value is in his versatility and experience at multiple positions, so consider it a positive sign that he played all across the line during the game. I’m no draft expert, but it appears many are applying a ‘sleeper’ tag to his status.

Both former Badgers are sure to be in action during Wisconsin’s NFL Pro Day later next month.
