Eagles finish 2024 regular season with a 14-3 record after 20-13 win over Giants

After losing six of their final seven, including a playoff loss to the Buccaneers, the Eagles regrouped and won the NFC as the No. 2 seed and a 14-win team after a win over the Giants in the regular season finale.

Third-string quarterback and potential trade asset Tanner McKee was 27-41 passing for 269 yards, two touchdowns, and a 100.6 passer rating.

Rookie and former Clemson running back Will Shipley led the Eagles with 11 carries for 32 yards (3.2 average). Jahan Dotson was the top pass catcher with seven receptions for 94 yards (13.4 average), and Dallas Goedert had four catches for 55 yards in his return to the lineup.

The Eagles defense allowed 238 yards of offense and held the Giants to 4-14 on third downs.   Philadelphia will now await the Green Bay and Washington results.

A Packers win and Commanders loss to Dallas would set up a third Washington matchup with Philadelphia, with Lincoln Financial Field being the host site.

It wasn’t Jalen Hurts, but Tanner McKee can be just as efficient, and the Eagles are on their way to a 14th win on the season, leading the GiantsM 10-0 at the end of the first half. According to Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports, McKee is the first quarterback with three passing touchdowns in his first seven career pass attempts since at least 1991. The Philadelphia defense has held the New York Giants to just 84 yards of offense and 54 yards on the ground. With the second half set to begin, here are five takeaways from the first half. ***

A mic’d up A.J. Brown hilariously apologized to Tanner McKee for throwing 1st TD ball into stands

A.J. Brown retrieved the ball from Tanner McKee’s first touchdown pass and apologized profusely in a hilarious moment from Sunday’s 41-7 win over the Cowboys.

The Philadelphia Eagles were already dipping into their quarterback depth chart on Sunday with Jalen Hurts missing the game against the Dallas Cowboys, and with backup Kenny Pickett suffering an injury early in a 41-7 blowout win for the Eagles, third-stringer Tanner McKee got his opportunity.

McKee made the most of it, finding receiver A.J. Brown for what was the first touchdown in his two-year career. However, instead of saving the ball for McKee, Brown threw it to a fan in the stands without thinking about it.

Though McKee ultimately got his ball back, it made for a hilariously moment between him and Brown which was captured on the sidelines thanks to both players being mic’d up.

“No! Did he really?” McKee said when told Brown threw the ball into the stands. “I got family over there, so maybe they got it.”

Brown went to retrieve the ball and bring it back to McKee, apologizing profusely.

“I launched it. I’m sorry!” Brown told McKee.

Sunday was McKee’s first appearance in an NFL game, and he completed three of four passes for 54 yards and a pair of touchdowns. And now, despite Brown’s moment of carelessness, he has the game ball from his first time finding paydirt.

Tanner McKee made NFL history in his regular season debut with the Eagles

Tanner McKee is the first player in the NFL Draft era (since 1936) to have multiple TD passes in his NFL debut while attempting five or fewer passes.

Tanner McKee waited for this moment, and his first game action would be one for the record books and a potential film on the big screen.

With Kenny Pickett nursing broken ribs, McKee became the first player in the NFL Draft era (since 1936) to have multiple touchdown passes in his NFL debut while attempting five or fewer passes.

The former Stanford quarterback and sixth-round pick finished 3-4 passing for 54 yards (13.5 avg) and two touchdowns, with a 156.2 rating.

The Eagles are rolling in Week 17, taking a 34-7 lead over the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field after Tanner McKee hooked up with A.J. Brown for a 20-yard touchdown.

Afterward, an excited Brown threw the ball high up into the fans section at Lincoln Financial Field and didn’t realize he made a gaffe until he reached the sideline.

A second-year player and former sixth-round pick out of Stanford, McKee has never thrown a touchdown pass during a regular season game, and the play to Brown was his first NFL touchdown.

A.J. Brown hilariously threw Tanner McKee’s 1st TD ball into the stands without a second thought

Thankfully, the Eagles got Tanner McKee his ball back!

Tanner McKee earned his first-career NFL touchdown on Sunday, but the ball went on a bit of a journey before getting to him first.

During the Philadelphia Eagles Week 17 rout of the Dallas Cowboys, McKee had to step in for an injured Kenny Pickett during the third quarter. With the Eagles up 27-7 at the time, McKee tossed his first NFL touchdown to A.J. Brown on a beautiful pass to the veteran wide receiver.

However, after the touchdown, Brown celebrated the moment by launching the ball into the stands without a second thought for his quarterback’s milestone. Oops!

When Brown got to the Eagles’ sideline, he hilariously realized his mistake and promised the fan who caught the ball his jersey after the game. Then the Eagles — led by security chief Dom DiSandro — were able to get the ball back from the fan and give it to its rightful owner in McKee.

Here’s a longer video of the whole exchange.

Shoutout to the fan for being a good sport here in giving McKee his milestone ball. And, of course, to Brown and the Eagles for doing their due diligence in rectifying the mistake.

All’s well that ends well!

Best photos from the Philadelphia Eagles 14-13 win over the New England Patriots in preseason matchup at Gillette Stadium

The Eagles remain undefeated in the preseason after an ugly 14-13 win over the rebuilding Patriots at Gillette Stadium on Thursday night.  New England rookie quarterback Drake Maye ran for a touchdown and led the Patriots on two of the team’s three scoring drives.  The No. 3 overall draft pick out of North Carolina appeared in just one series in the Patriots’ preseason opener but played the second and third quarters on Thursday night, finishing 6 of 11 for 47 yards.  The Patriots held a 13-6 lead in the fourth quarter when the Eagles rallied. Rookie running back Kendall Milton ran for a 1-yard touchdown, and second-year quarterback Tanner McKee connected with rookie wide receiver Ainias Smith on the 2-point conversion to give Nick Sirianni’s team the lead.  With the Eagles starting preparation for their preseason finale against the Vikings, here are the top photos from Thursday night. ***

Did Tanner McKee earn a shot at Eagles backup QB job with performance vs. Patriots?

Former Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee earned the right to be the Eagles backup quarterback with his performance in preseason win over Patriots

It’s only the preseason and not even a competition for Jalen Hurts’s spot as the franchise’s face. Still, Tanner McKee took giant steps toward securing the Eagles’ backup quarterback job with a masterful performance against the Patriots on Thursday night.

McKee entered the game on two different occasions — starting the third quarter and returning midway through the fourth.

The results were a stat line of 15-19 for 140 yards (7.4 average) and a 97.4 rating. McKee far outshone Kenny Pickett’s 11 of 13 passing for 67 yards (5.2 average), an 88.1 rating, and the former Steelers first-round pick got sacked four times on the night.

Philadelphia gave up a 2024 third-round pick (No. 98 overall) and a pair of 2025 seventh-round picks to acquire the former Pitt Panthers star, so simply releasing Pickett if this battle doesn’t go his way isn’t the most cost-effective answer. The Eagles could look to trade Pickett or keep all three quarterbacks on the roster, ensuring daily competition and two talented trade assets in a league where quarterbacks miss games weekly.

Takeaways and observations from Eagles joint practice with Patriots

Philadelphia got their most extensive day of competition this summer after the team joined the Patriots for one joint practice session ahead of Thursday night’s preseason contest at Gillette Stadium.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts looked sharp throughout the session, while DeVonta Smith put on a route running clinic. On defense, Nakobe Dean and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. stood out, while Cooper DeJean returned to practice for the first time since training camp started.

With the Eagles scheduled for a Wednesday walkthrough, here are takeaways and observations from the joint practice.

Joint practices are essential in Philadelphia. Isaiah Rodgers’s taking first-team reps on Tuesday all but solidifies his starting spot opposite Darius Slay in the opener against Green Bay.

Devin White is a lock to start at inside linebacker, while Zack Baun and Nakobe Dean alternated reps with the first-team defense in various situations.

The Eagles offense won’t be stale in 2024, as Kellen Moore is showing more pre-snap motion and zips in his formations.

Drake Maye didn’t play a lot of snaps in the Patriots’ first preseason game, but the rookie quarterback is getting plenty of work against the Eagles.

Maye and the Patriots hosted a joint practice with the Eagles on Tuesday. Head coach Jerod Mayo said before the workout that Maye and Jacoby Brissett would be getting most of the work because “we’ve got to get ready to play some real football.”

Mayo labeled Maye “steady,” and the former UNC star made some big throws on Tuesday.

The Eagles star quarterback looked sharp on Tuesday morning,

Dean has gone from getting second-team reps behind Zack Baun to having a solid preseason opener, and he’s flashed again during the joint practice.

Trotter Jr. had a sack in the preseason opener and flashed again during the joint practice.

It was only a joint practice against the rebuilding Patriots, but the Eagles’ pass rush was intense and stout all morning.
