So close.

The Buffalo Bills were a few penalty calls away from handing Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady his fourth-career loss to Buffalo in his career.

Bills QB Josh Allen did everything he could but the Bills (7-6) couldn’t fully overcome a 21-point deficit.

Here’s how Bills Wire graded Buffalo’s Week 14 performance:

Josh Allen impresses teammates despite comeback falling short: ‘He’s a warrior’

Josh Allen impresses #Bills teammates despite comeback falling short: ‘He’s a warrior’

As the Buffalo Bills entered halftime, down 24-3 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it felt as though western New York was in-store for another blowout loss. Something similar to the Indianapolis Colts game a few weeks prior.

Then… things changed.

The MVP candidate in Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen we heard so much about heading into the season emerged from the locker room in the second half/ He threw the Bills on his back.

The Bills (7-6) scored 24-points in the second half and sent the game to overtime.

Despite the heroic comeback, the Buffalo ultimately dropped the game 33-27, thanks in part to some rather questionable calls from the officials.

Even in the loss, Allen’s teammates couldn’t say enough about their franchise quarterback.

“He’s a baller,” Bill safety, Jordan Poyer, said via video conference after the game. “I’d go to war with Josh any day of the week.”

“That’s our General for sure,” Bills running back Devin Singletary added. “He’s a dog. No matter what, he’s always gonna give it his all and that’s what he showed.”

With a little less than 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Allen injured his left foot/ankle. He stayed in the game, which only added to the impression he left on his teammates.

“Josh is one of the toughest competitors, one of the most resilient football players and people I’ve ever been around,” Bills center Mitch Morse said. “Never seen him point a finger, except at himself. A guy you can rally around. A guy who is in pain. You saw the pain he was in… was still asking for QB runs. Still asking to put it on his back. When you have a guy like that step into a huddle, you know, you’re so prideful to have a quarterback like that, you want to do everything in your power to help him lead our team down the field… Josh Allen is a competitor. If anyone questioned that after today, they weren’t watching the same game we were.”

Bills tight end Dawson Knox, who caught a touchdown and also had a big reception that moved the Bills into field position to ultimately send the game to OT, added to the Allen praise.

“He’s a warrior and everybody sees that and you know, when the team rallies around a guy like that, it’s gonna be hard to beat,” Knox told the media. “The way he puts the team on the back, dealing with whatever injury he’s got right now… we’ve seen it time after time from him, so no ones really surprised, but there’s no other guy I’d rather lead us into a game.”

Bills head coach Sean McDermott, who was critical of his team following their Monday night loss to the Patriots, was impressed with what he saw out of his team’s ability to be resilient on Sunday, led by the QB.

“He’s a warrior and he played his butt off,” McDermott said. “That’s why the guys love him. That’s why he’s our quarterback.”

McDermott wasn’t done.

“Ya, incredible, I mean, look, I know we came up short, right? Incredible, incredible amount of heart and guts that they showed, this team, Josh included, right? But all of them, all of them.”

Allen himself, wrote off the injury saying, “it’s pretty sore, but that’s football.”

He was then asked what went into the decision to keep him in the game and did he say anything specific when it came down to that decision.

“Yeah, there’s no way I was going out,” Allen said.

As Allen often does, he took the positive attention off of his own performance and put it back on his teammates.

“I know the score is what the score was, but I’m damn proud of our team and how we fought in the second half,” Allen said. “That’s who we are. That’s the team I’ve known to love and to know really. Guys that are just resilient. Guys that just want to fight for each other. Again, it is what it is, the score is what it was, but to come out and play that way, I’m proud of our team, of how we did it. Obviously we wish the end result was different, I’m super, super proud of our guys.”

While as Morse said, there is no questioning the level of toughness in Allen, the Bills now find themselves in a difficult spot when it comes to making the playoffs.

At 7-6, the Bills are currently in the seventh seed in the AFC and hold the final playoff spot. Their current odds are listed at 65% when it comes to the likelihood at that they will be in the postseason.

With only four games remaining, the Bills are going to have to pray that Allen’s injury isn’t serious and that they can start stringing together some wins down the stretch, or performances like this… will all be for not.

Bills QB Josh Allen in walking boot following loss to Buccaneers

#Bills QB Josh Allen in walking boot following loss to #Buccaneers:

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was in a walking boot on Sunday evening after his team’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14.

Allen, who helped engineer a 21-point comeback in the 33-27 overtime loss, appeared to injure his foot in the fourth quarter. However, the QB never missed a snap.

Despite that, the boot still made an appearance at his postgame press conference:

During his presser, Allen did not indicate the extent of the injury.

His demeanor did not indicate anything worrisome. Not to mention, not much of any limp in the video above.

The boot could simply be a precautionary measure.

“There was no way I was coming out,” Allen said via video conference.

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott, one to never leak any sort of news update, also did not give an update on Allen.

The coach simple called him a “warrior” for his efforts in the loss.

The Buccaneers were extra sure they quickly recovered Tom Brady’s 700th TD pass

The Buccaneers’ staffer showed elite awareness, he might have a future on the fields.

The Buccaneers learned from their early season mistake involving a record-setting touchdown pass from Tom Brady. Back in October, when Brady threw his 600th regular season pass, a fan ended up with the ball after Mike Evans tossed the ball into the stands during his celebration.

The fan gave the ball back, but it cost the team memorabilia and it cost Brady himself an entire Bitcoin — worth roughly $50,000 right now.

There was no way they were going to get got again in one of these instances and when 44-year old Tom Brady is the quarterback, milestones are going to be set constantly.

When Brady tossed a game-winning touchdown in overtime to Breshad Perriman, the 700th touchdown pass of his career including the playoffs, a member of the Buccaneers’ staff jumped into action and immediately grabbed the ball before chaos ensued.

If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.

Also, it’s fairly remarkable that Brady has played long enough to score 700 touchdowns.

Now, Brady will be looking to add his, uh, eighth Super Bowl ring as a starting quarterback as the season winds down.

What we learned from the Bills’ loss to the Buccaneers

The Bills were plundered by the Buccaneers on Sunday.

Here are five things we learned from the 33-27 loss:

Hear the thrilling radio call of Tom Brady’s overtime touchdown vs. Bills: ‘Perriman! Perriman!’

What a play!

Tom Brady, as usual, has done it again.

And again. And again. Etc.

In fact, his touchdown to Breshad Perriman in overtime to help the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take down the Buffalo Bills 33-27 was the 700th passing TD of his career (that’s including the postseason).

And that score? It was a 58-yarder, caught by Perriman, who ran it in for the game-winner. Wild!

The call from the Bucs’ radio booth was terrific, capped off with a “Perriman! Perriman! Perriman!” The Bills’ call — also included below, thanks to Timothy Burke — wasn’t as sad as you’d expect, but maybe that’s because it’s amazing to see Brady do this over and over:

Amazing.

Instant analysis: Bills, Josh Allen battle back but comeback falls short vs. Bucs

Instant analysis: #Bills, Josh Allen battle back but comeback falls short vs. the #Bucs (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills erased a 21-point halftime deficit to send their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to overtime in Week 14.

But then Bucs quarterback Tom Brady once again got the best of the Bills, as Buffalo fell to Tampa Bay in overtime, 33-27.

Buffalo’s first half play was less than desirable. The defense struggled to contain the Buccaneers (10-3) offense, as Tampa Bay put up 303 total yards in the first two quarters.  Brady was 19-of-26 for 214 passing yards and one passing touchdown.

The Bills (7-6) defense, for all of the lamenting about their rush defense, did a fairly good job, allowing 89 yards on 16 carries over the first half.

However, as a fatal flaw of the defense, Buffalo once again gave up a long run, a 47-yard scamper by Tampa running back Leonard Fournette to open the scoring:

Buffalo’s offense could only muster three points in the first half. Bills QB Josh Allen was under constant duress, completely destroying the timing of routes.

Buffalo punted four times and Allen threw an interception during the first two quarters. The Bills did not convert any of their five third-down attempts.

But then something flipped after halftime. Tampa Bay’s offense was lethargic in challenging Buffalo’s defense. The Buccaneers could only tack on a field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Buffalo made their biggest change in play-calling, putting the game on the back of Allen. And, it almost ended with a victory.

Allen ran for the Bills’ first touchdown, an 18-yard run up the middle. Allen added touchdown passes to tight end Dawson Knox and wideout Gabriel Davis.

Allen threw for 308 passing yards while adding 109 rushing yards:

It looked like Buffalo was on the cusp of completing the comeback, as they won the coin toss in overtime.

However, the Bills went three-and-out on their sole overtime drive on offense, once again asking a great deal of their defense.

While Buffalo’s defense held strong during the second half, giving the Bills an opportunity to win, they could not stop Brady on the final drive.

It was dangerous putting the ball in Brady’s hands and unfortunately, Buffalo’s defense broke:

The biggest concern focuses on Allen.

He injured his left ankle while running for a first down. This is where having no semblance of a competent running attack bites the Bills, as Allen is forced to take plenty of hits while running for his life.

For the first time in 30 years, a team did not have a running back carry the ball in a half. Buffalo did that tonight. In fact, their first official run occurred on the failed fake punt on the opening drive of the second half.

Buffalo’s offensive line struggled to pick up blitzes, particularly secondary blitzes off the edge. In addition to Allen taking shots while running the ball, he was constantly on his back or running out of the pocket to avoid pressure.

Tampa Bay registered 11 quarterback hits on the game.

Folks can look at this heartbreaking loss in multiple ways.

The silver lining: the team can make adjustments to challenge an elite team.

The problem: Buffalo put themselves in a deep hole that they could not completely escape.

There are still questions with respect to the team’s play calling.

Buffalo’s offense looked completely lost in the first half, while the defense gave up points on Tampa Bay’s first four possessions. The fake punt call was quizzical, to say the least.

The ball didn’t bounce in Buffalo’s favor during several moments in the game. There were multiple times where it appeared that wide receiver Stefon Diggs faced very handy defending. The Buccaneers first-down conversion in overtime was far from a certainty.

However, spotting a team with the talent of Tampa Bay a three-score lead by halftime doesn’t help, either.

And, that’s what Buffalo must figure out moving forward.

Buffalo falls to seventh in the AFC playoff standings. As of Sunday, they are one of five teams with a 7-6 record.

Coming off back-to-back losses, the Bills look to get things back on track next Sunday at Highmark Stadium against the Carolina Panthers.

Here are five takeaways from the Buffalo Bills’ 33-27 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14:

Radio call as Tom Brady breaks Bills’ hearts again … in overtime

Tom Brady was in a different uniform but he still managed to break the Bills

The Buffalo Bills had rallied to force overtime. They had the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pinned at their 6-yard line.

Tom Brady wouldn’t do it to the Bills once again, would he?

Of course, he would and of course, he did.

The GOAT led a 94-yard drive that culminated with a 58-yard pass to Breshad Perriman for a touchdown and a 33-27 victory for Tampa Bay over Buffalo on Sunday.

The winning play was the 700th TD pass of Brady’s remarkable NFL career and came on a third-and-3.

It also was the only time Brady targeted Perriman in the entire game.

The radio call:

The GOAT is 33-3 against the Bills, who have not defeated Brady in 10 years.

The winning play spoiled a comeback that saw Buffalo rally from 21 down and score 17 points in less than 9 minutes in the fourth quarter.

Mess with the GOAT and you wind up with the horns.

Bills come back from 21 down to force OT against the Bucs

The Bills launched an incredible rally to force OT against Tampa Bay

The Buffalo Bills were lifeless and Tom Brady seemed intent on pinning another defeat on them.

They trailed 24-3 at halftime and the GOAT looked like he was about to go 33-3 against Buffalo, which had not beaten him in 10 years.

It was 27-10 after a Ryan Succup field goal with 11:24 left in the fourth quarter.

Game over, right? Dead wrong.

Josh Allen and the Bills scored 17 points over a span of 8:45 and tied the game at 27 when Tyler Bass made a 25-yard field goal with 24 seconds left.

Allen found Dawson Knox from 15 yards for  TD and Gabriel Davis from 4 for another to put Buffalo in a position to drive late for the win or the game-tying field goal.

The Bass kick was good and the teams were on their way to overtime.

Allen became the fourth player of all-time to have 300 passing yards and 100 rushing in a game, joining Cam Newton, Russell Wilson and Lamar Jackson.
